CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tzadok (Matisyahu) leads the family in an excorcism to banish the demon from Em's (Natasha Calis) body, but the demon is no pushover.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Inspired by Los Angeles Times writer Leslie Gornstein's article "A Jinx in a Box," this horror film from Ghost House Pictures and director Ole Bornedal (Nightwatch) tells the tale of a broken family that comes under attack from a malevolent supernatural entity of Jewish folklore. Shortly after her parents (Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick) divorce, a young girl purchases an ornate antique box at a yard sale. In the weeks that follow, the young girl forms an intense fixation on the box, her behavior growing increasingly bizarre as she falls into the grip of a diabolical apparition. When the girl's father discovers that the relic is in fact a holding cell for the disconnected soul of a deceased person who has been denied entry into the afterlife and needs a human host to inhabit, he fights to rid her of the evil that threatens to consume her body and soul.

None of this happened in real life. The movie claims that it is based on a true story, but the actual true story is far more interesting and logical. The buyer of the box was a man named Kevin Mannis and there was no exorcism or a girl involved in the original story.

I thought this was a comedy. The thing is, Judaism is actually against exorcisms, it's believed to be going against what the soul actually is, and Judaism actually does not believe in a devil in any way shape or form. Evils believed to be a construct, build off of pain and prejudice. So, in short, a rabbi would never think of exorcism if seeing a little girl screaming, he would say she has trauma and or mental health issues, and the only thing that would seem directly religious related that he would do is ask the parents to pray for her speedy healing, referring to mental health. He may then suggest a good therapist for her to go to to deal with whatever is going on for her, and also talk to the parents about what life was like at home.

First he isn’t a priest, he is a regular Jewish person or perhaps a Rabbi. Second, he is not jumping the air. It’s called davening and is used in Jewish prayer. At least try to know what you are saying so you don’t sound stupid.
