Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Would you believe me if I told you that one grumpy radio DJ from Chicago changed the face of the music industry as we know it? And that he did this with exploding records and frisbees of death? Well, let me explain…because that is all true. In today’s episode, we talk about Disco Demolition Night. And how it altered the path of not only Disco Music but all pop music as we know it today.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

Hi from Chicago! Vince Lawrence is actually my dad!! You wouldn’t believe how shocked I was to see my two favorite people on the same screen!! I can confirm, he loved this episode and said it is very accurate. You will be happy to know the records that were saved from the demolition were used to create house music!! A real circle of life moment ❤❤ thank you Bailey for showcasing my dad and telling THE REAL story! ❤❤❤❤

I went to discos from 1975-79 with my Farrah hair, platform heels and low cut polyester dresses. I was there 5-6 nights a week. It was a wonderful time where you could shed your daily work or school identity and dress up, wear makeup and lose yourself in a great music beat. The dance steps were fun and line dances were common. I was a disco queen, enjoyed the dancing, the funny fruity drinks, the escape from reality. The main thing disco meant to everyone was a fun happy time away from your real boring day life. Side note, not one person did that John Travolta hand pointed in the air move. Not Ever. Until I saw Saturday Night Fever, I'd never seen that move on a real dancefloor. It also signaled the END of the disco Era and the beginning of punk and nu-wave. I thought that protest in the stadium burning music was one of the most hateful acts I'd ever witnessed.

My parents (an interracial couple) used to always talk about their nights in the clubs, and how they’d dance the night away to disco and draw a crowd. When I was growing up in the 80s, my parents would throw disco parties in the basement. I’d hear The Bee Gees, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Donna Summer, and more. It was really cool, actually. Of course, I was drawn to more 80’s music. Specifically Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, and Blondie (though Blondie started in the 70’s). This is a VERY interesting Dark History. Thanks so much for sharing in your usual, AMAZING style. ❤️❤️❤️

@@ghiajohnson1547 My dad used to take me to bars on the regular when I was a kid. He'd order me a plate of french fries and a Coke and I'd sit at the bar with the bar tenders and would talk their ears off. Dad would have his few beers and socialize for a wee bit and then we'd go home. In my teens my dad still took me to bars, would order me a Coke and whatever I wanted off the menu. I graduated to sitting at the table while he and his friends had a few beers and hung out or watch the hockey game if it was on a Saturday night. It was so normal for me that in my early adult years when pubs and bars didn't allow anyone under the drinking age (19 in Canada) into them I was rather surprised and it took me a while to get my head wrapped around that.

I learned so much from this episode and I’m a chicago girl who lived through it. I used to listen to both stations, so heard Steve complaining about disco all the time. Then it was over to the WDAI to listen to the music. I laughed when he planned Disco Demolition, but shortly after the event my clubs closed and disco was dead. A real fun time to live.

Love you Bailey. I lived through the 70s and never heard this story. However I remember the disco music. Many of my friends did not like it but I found it fun. The 70s was so depressing. You might check into the totally depressing movies like Saturday Night Fever, Midnight Cowboy and others. People in the 70s had no escape. Economy was bad, Vietnam was depressing with so many friends being killed, or I particularly remember sitting in lines for gas. If you ever have any questions about the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s, don’t hesitate to con tact me. Love you Bailey, you remind me of my granddaughter.

I graduated high school in 1973 and loved disco, The Bee Gees, Alice Cooper, Todd Rundgren, Bread, Queen, Engelbert Humperdinck, along with opera and classical music. Enjoying several different types of music and expanding knowledge was what disco meant to me. Sadly in my small town I was not accepted because I was "weird". Even my 3 older siblings didn't want to be associated with me. Sadly, I tried to fit into the very small mindset of being the normal that the majority of the people I was around promoted. Ended up having a major emotional breakdown trying to be something I definitely was not. It took several years to stop being afraid of being ridiculed and knowing that being "weird" was so much better than being "normal". One older sister has finally accepted me the other two have disowned me. Life is so much better without them or living in that small town! So, that was what I learned from the disco era!

I went to disco clubs dancing with my high platformed shoes and disco dresses. We did this every weekend. I met my husband at a disco club, and we are married for 43 years. It was a fun time, and I miss the clothes, I miss dancing the night away. I was so thin back then. 😂 my older brothers on the other hand hated disco. I won’t tell you what they called it. We had our arguments. Thanks for the memories Bailey ❤

I grew up in the 70s, I absolutely love disco AND classic rock and metal. 70s disco fashion was cool af! I loved when platforms and bell bottoms came back in style in the 90s!

I watched Saturday night fever as a younger person and I liked it because it seemed so naughty. But I tried to re watch it a couple weeks ago and as a now 34 year old it was not the same. He was a creep for sure.

I remember how excited my friends were about it when it came out. I thought it was ok. I tried to watch it again a couple of weeks ago. At 56, I found it to be unwatchable.

This is probably one of my favorite dark histories because, for me, it highlights that the hyper-politicized fear driven hate that as a young person has felt new isn't new at all. It really gave me the same vibes & energy as people not knowing anything about lgbt, drag, etc, but still hating on it, driven by fear. I had genuinely not heard of any of this before, and it really helps give context to a lot of things. I don't remember why it came up, but it also reminds me of rap being associated with black and impoverished music artists and the blind hate that's associated with that. Blind hate and fear mongering are genuinely some of the biggest destructive forces in our world. It's so important to remember not to identify with what you hate but with what you love. Thank you so much for this Bailey 💗

these are the same fears with 1950's rock and roll, 1960's beatle (esqu) music, hippie's. every decade the same fears come out with a different target. it's fear of social changes.

There’s suggestions that the hippies were created by the CIA to make the academic peace movement seem ridiculous while simultaneously acting as controlled opposition, look up Laurel Canyon and the strange things that happened there.
