Hi Friends! Happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Tis the season. And by season I mean scented candle season. Nothing makes you feel more warm and cuddly than an apple cinnamon candle and a blanket. But what if I told you by burning that candle you’re doing the same amount of damage as just inhaling straight exhaust fumes. Seriously. In today’s episode we go into the dark seedy history of fragrance. And how because of them, something as simple as a scented candle is deadly.

Hello all! DO NOT pick products that say "unscented", because it only means there is no specific scent created but it still uses fragrances to hide the chemically smells of the product. Instead CHOOSE "fragrance free" !!! Have a great day 😃

I’m highly allergic to fragrance and have been my whole life, so I’ve always had to go to great lengths to avoid common substances (candles, perfumes, cosmetics, deodorants, etc etc etc). After decades of trial and error, I’ve had the best experience with Native deodorant, PÜR foundation, and candles made with essential oils and non-paraffin waxes. Hope this helps somebody! Whether or not you know you’re allergic to fragrance, it’s best to avoid it.

You know what’s insane that I am irritated by not only fragrance but essential oils as well. Some essential oils are just as bad and unnecessary in product as fragrance.

The truth hurts - I don't think I'd give ab eff if it was just me, but I freak out about plastic in particular, and my kids drinking out if plastic bottles. My son actually his a Fiji water bottle from me in his room, he didn't want to put it in the recycling so I'd see it. Maybe I'm a little much about it but I watch things like this and realize im not!

My cat has been having breathing problems. And the vet couldn’t figure out why. So after this episode, I stopped using Bath and Bodyworks, plug-ins, and any candles at all. Because I didn’t know that they were poisonous, and my cats health completely cleared up! You literally saved my best friends life, by making this video thank you soooooo much 🙏🏽

maybe try the beeswax ones that use essential oils? I have no idea if they are better but it seems they would be without the paraffin wax

@Tara Lippincott as a certified aromatherapist and candle maker, essential oils become toxic when heated to high Temps like in a candle. It's actually more dangerous than synthetic fragrances. Reach for small business candles that emphasize using clean scents made with pthlalate oaraben and sulfate free fragrance oils. Plus essential oils are known to cause kidney failure in cats and complications in oregnant women. E.o.s are not even meant to be diffused for longer than 15 minutes a day.

@@vail51 Yes, or soy candles with essential oils. You can also buy unscented candles and puts a few drops of essential oil, e.g. lavender, atop before burning them.

I read about a lady who moved to Germany with her husband (to the military) and she said she was eating the same cereal she eats here (cheerios I believe) and in 3 months she lost 12 pounds. She had no idea why then she started checking the different of the stuff she eats here and she was eating there and there’s so many chemicals in the stuff we have here. She is now scared!!

I can attest to this. I’m born European and every time I go visit I drop quite few pounds without even trying. And every time my skinny family comes to visit me for more than two weeks, they all gain weight. Even my bony sister - last time she stayed here with her husband for 3 weeks and she gained over 7 pounds by literally eating like a bird! It’s downright alarming if you ask me. I try to eat clean and healthy, but I always have to watch what and how much to keep my weight from jumping all over. When I visit Europe, I eat twice as much because of visiting all relatives and everyone cooking and I still loose so much weight. No other explanation except the US food being full of BAD ingredients. And I mean SUPER BAD! 😩

Yes! Try adding other food spices too. Like star anise and cardamom. Lemon grass and lavender grow in my yard. At thanksgiving I use sage.

In order to transition to natural deodorant you have to "detox" from regular deodorant. Trust me, it's a rough couple of weeks. I thought I was going to have to throw away clothes, but once I got through it, then you can figure out which natural you like the best. You have to be dedicated 😂😂😂

Bailey, Years ago I tried home made cleaners, I have a lime tree and read about lime skins in vinegar. You can start using it after 2 weeks. It smells AMAZING! I've been using it for years, I just keep refilling the glass bottle stuffed with lime skins, but lemon or any citrus would work. I love the smell. I try to clean most stuff with it. You can even soak a small rag with it and use it as a softener sheet in your dryer.

I do this too.giant glass jar, just keep adding citrus peels and more vinegar. Let sit for a few weeks and strain the peels. Cleans well, house smells fresh

I was getting worried but then you mentioned the difference with Europe; meanwhile the members of the European Union have more than 1,600 chemicals banned in personal products there are lots of countries and even CLOTHES that affect our health. Your crow fact is completely true I've always treated crows well feed them n be respectful to there nests etc n Ive never been swooped or bothered one day I lost a ring at my mum's backyard three days later the ring was on my houses front door steep 30 min drive away with a black tail feather 🪶 with it amazing yes but true crows never forget even after passing it's a fact. ❤

Crows r smart they make tools and have facially recognition, only time I mess with them is when they were dive bombing my little Chihuahua (7LB) in the yard and had to chase them away with a broom. I will defend my baby but otherwise I am respectful cuz they scare me how smart they r

It is true that crows will remember you if you do something hateful to them, but they also remember you when you do something kind to them. They have been known to bring gifts to the person that is kind to them. I did not know about the next generation knowing. Velvety usually means smooth.

FYI: Unscented does not always mean fragrance-free. If a product is labeled unscented read the ingredients.

@@amysenior8277 it’s marketing. If you turn the product over and look at the ingredients it will show “parfum” most likely as one of the ingredients in unscentened products or they mask them using organic ingredients.

@@amysenior8277 they use fragrances to mask the smell of the product in order to make it "unscented". The truly fragrance free products I own have a smell, but it's just whatever the actual product smells like which isn't always a positive smell (nothing bad, just obviously not as pleasant as sugar meadow rainbows or whatever. More on the neutral side).

When I started greening the products in my house a decade or so ago, I was incredibly overwhelmed by how many things needed to be changed. So I came up with the motto (or slogan, mantra, rule, whatever makes you comfortable) "Better Next Time". As in, "I'll finish this bottle of Windex, and when I need to buy more window cleaner, I'll do better next time." It breaks it into manageable pieces of research and purchasing.

At fertility clinics, they tell patients not to use deodorant or perfumes/scents the day they have a procedure. So all this Totally makes sense and is very scary 😮

I had tried to get pregnant for years without success. A doctor told me to stop using fabric softener and fragrances to see if it helped, and I got pregnant 2 months after stopping using fragrance. I fully believed this was the reason I couldn’t get pregnant

Last fall I bought a candle from my grocery store, it was only $10. I fell in love with the scent, went back and got 2 more and put them around my house and happily burned them, feeling all Martha Stewart like. Until I realized there were 3 huge black smoke stains on my ceilings and marks up the wall. It was coming off the candles. I knew I didn't want my family breathing that garbage in so I threw them all out. I did a little research into all those wax melts, plug in's and all scentsy products. Got rid of them all.

I work at a place in Oregon that makes electric cables. Every once in awhile we come across a label on a part that warns us that in California, the chemicals in this part can cause birth defects. I jokingly told my co- worker not to worry because it only happens in California. 🙃 Sounds like California is ahead of us in protecting their citizens. Thank you for caring, Bailey!

Simmer pots everyone! That’s what I’m steering towards. There are many different recipes with fruit, spices, ect and water that you very slowly boil on your stove and they smell fabulous… even better than candles. At least try it out… I think y’all might be surprised!

I completely forgot this was a thing. When I went into the Williams Sonoma store a couple of years ago, they did just that. Particularly with a lot of hints of cinnamon. The whole store had such a wonderful aroma. Thank you for reminding me.

This may be far fetched but I feel like more and more people are having issues like adhd and I’m sure part of it is people are finally acknowledging it as a real problem… but maybe it’s happening more due to all the fragrances in our everyday lives , lotions soaps and perfumes … 🧐

A lot of people with respiratory problems too such as COPD which is smoking related but when I saw my pulmo for hypersensitivity pneumonitis he did ask if I used plug in air freshener etc

What an interesting fact about chemical memory. I LOVE crows. I also learned that if they like you, they do you favors and leave you gifts. I have intentionally invited crows to hang out around my property and they protect my chickens from birds of prey. They even eat together sometimes, it’s crazy-cute

I was sitting on my porch with my cockatiel one day and 3 crows started frantically circling us and bombing into the tree right next to me. I thought they were trying to attack my little bird until a huge hawk flew out of the tree they were swarming. After that, I always left fresh water out for them. They saved my little bird!

From someone with MCAS, I would suggest moderation if anything and listen real well to what your body tells you (I don’t tell people to not use the products, I just tell them the facts and how it affects me, but it’s a personal choice if you have the choice) 🫶🏼

Thank you for covering this topic. We stopped using all candles, wall plug ins, aerosol fragrance sprays, wax cubes, perfumes, scented cleaning products, etc. Our son has asthma (genetic from his fathers side of the family), and one of the first things his asthma and allergy specialist told us to do was to stop using all of those things in our home. We immediately stopped all use and not only did it help with our sons asthma but my husbands migraines stopped all together. Not only do these things cause issues with your breathing, skin, eyes etc; they can also cause GI symptoms. It's not worth it and its so scary that all of chemicals are still legal to use in our every day products.

Bailey!! When you switch to natural deodorant it takes a couple weeks for your body to get used to it, bc you have to detox. Then it works, Native and Dr. Teals.

I remember watching a documentary about hidden chemicals in our every day products. There is a loophole that most companies can get away with. There are about 17,000 or so chemicals that can fall under the category of "fragrance", so when you call the customer service lines to find out what is exactly in your product, legally all they have to do is say "fragrance" and they do not have to disclose any more information about it, its crazy.

My kitty got asthma due to scented products 😢 he gets his pump every day and doing well but as a vet tech I’m glad you’re spreading this message 🧡 Febreeze, laundry detergent, diffusers, candles***, perfume, body spray, soap, the list goes on. Now most of what I own is unscented 👍🏽

I watched the HBO Max series when I was 8 weeks pregnant. My husband threw/ gave away all my bath and body works stuff. I was so sad but I do see the difference in my headaches. I lived with chronic migraines all my high school years, now I rarely get them even with a screaming baby.

I'm actually allergic to fragrance! The smell makes my eyes water uncontrollably and products with them make my skin itch! I used to be so annoyed by it because there were so many products I couldn't use (I couldn't even walk inside a Yankee candle). But I'm actually really grateful now, because it kept me away from so many harmful products. Now when my sister want to check if a perfume or candle is really "all natural" see has me smell it to see if I have a reaction 😂

Hey there, just remember that the dose makes the poison. Everything is poisonous if you take in enough of it. I'd suggest checking out Lab Muffin's blog and KZfaq channel where she talks about this issue. It might ease your anxieties :)

Thank you for covering this. I have been struggling with fragrance for years. People tell me I am crazy, but Several body wash, shampoos, soaps, cleaners, makeups, and hair products make my throat itch. I will cough and clear my throat for at least 10 minutes just from a sniff. They are everywhere. I think knowledge is key. Be aware but let yourself live.

As a candle maker, we are required to carry SDS (Safety Data Sheet) for every fragrance oil we use in our products. The next time you're at a craft market, ask for this information. Small businesses care more about your health more than a big chain company. I looked over mine and there are no Phthalates, or BPAs.

Hey Bailey! I have a suggestion for your predicament regarding underarm odor. Ok, so I found out earlier this year that if you pat on The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, or similar toner, on your underarm skin, let it dry, then put natural deodorant on, you won't develop unpleasant scents on that part of your body, even if you sweat from working out. It works super well! You will need to do this after every shower but it gets rid of the need for antiperspirants :D. I hope it helps you. Love your content btw.

So glad you mentioned Louisiana. Cancer alley is a horrible place. There are factories every 10 or so miles. Gordon Plaza is a community built on a landfill and the residents make up the second highest cancer causing community in Louisiana. This place is a mess.

The candle info is so true but only applies to mass produced paraffin based candles. Small batch soy wax or beeswax candles are quite safe (and they’re more expensive but worth it).
