Margaret had a lovely warmth and sparkle about her. You can really sense that the "grooming" invested into her was much lower than would have been for Elizabeth, being the heiress. Consequently she seemed immediately much more relatable to us ordinary rank and file folk. You get the same sort of sense from Prince Edward today.

That’s just how that generation spoke, and that applies to every language. People used to have a much larger vocabulary than the current generations. Whenever I’m with my grandmother I’m reminded of words that have fallen into disuse, like the word “disuse” lol I’m Portuguese and we have the same word, spelled “desuso”. Having said that though, vicarious is not exactly the fanciest word; there’s that expression “to live vicariously through someone”. Anyone that is not a simpleton knows that saying and can determine the meaning of the word “vicarious” through the adverb and its context in that saying. I’m not even a native English speaker and I know it, so it’s hardly upper English.
@wrathford5 ай бұрын
@@heucatia Hi, native English speaker here (also with degrees in English). I grew up in the UK and have mingled across different social groups all my life due to how I was raised. 'Vicarious' isn't a word that is normally used by everyday working class lay people - unfortunately there are a lot more 'simpletons' in the anglophone world than you think! Especially these days when more people prefer to pick up a phone than to read a book.
