Not a mechanic I miss, but a related thing that makes me insane: I cannot stand it when I forget that I talked to a villager earlier (sometimes many many hours earlier) and I make the mistake of talking to them again and they give me that snarky, passive aggressive "Wow nothing better to do today huh?" or "Seeing you a lot today.." type of response. Oh, sorry your highness, sorry I forgot I can't talk to my animal friends in the animal friend game more than twice a day without the 'tude. I'll give you your gift tomorrow, then. edit: "This was in every game" I dont care. I reall miss our villagers having emotions after talking to another neighbour. I loathe the fact, that every conversation ends in a neutral or happy sentiment. In earlier games they wouls get angry, or sing, or sad and the funniest thing was when one got sad and the other happy. Where are our fights? Lately I actually have noticed there’s a lot more dialogue in the game and I appreciate it so much. But I do also wish there would be more interactive things like treasure hunts, tasks, or adding back the hide and seek mechanic. I wanna have closer interactions with my villagers. But Im still so thankful Nintendo gave us more dialogue, I’m tired of hearing about Goldie’s book club and Cookie telling me three things. One, I’m fab. two, she means it. and three, there is no three.

They have treasure hunts already, but I think the reason why there is no hide-and-seek is because some players might have areas on their island where it's quite hard to get to, and a villager to hide there would cause some trouble.

There's literally NO excuse for the villagers to be so 2D in New Horizons. They do not match the current expectations for video games. Programming has come far enough that EVERY villager should have unique dialogue (yes, all 397 of them) and the dialogue should change as you become better friends with them. Villagers should have lasting mood effects too. It's so strange that you can hit a villager with a net until they get angry and then 3 dialogue boxes later and they're back to "hey! I like your outfit! It's such a nice day out!" (and that's from the apparent "cranky" villagers). Nintendo 100% has the funds and the man-power to make that happen, I'm tired of fans making excuses for them.

For my villagers.. I had to kinda "force" a personality onto them.. I have a total of 3 lazy villagers (my favorite type) where they're just the exact same character but with a different model on them.. It's Weber, Alfonso & Bob.. Weber i've made into a bug lover. His house is very "Earth" coloured and he has a dirt floor so i thought "Hey why not?" So he has a buch of bug & Nature stuff. Alfonso has a very colourful house inside and outside, so i made him the toy kid. He has a buch of toys everywhere. Bob i haven't really come up with anything as he doesn't really fit anything i can come up with.. But stuff like that i would have love to see in the game. The villagers actually have an interest. Let's say like 15-20 different hobbies within every personality type.. Then every villager get's one interest/hobby instead of EVERY lazy villager liking snacks and bugs.

Considering we get a massive list of play testers every time we have a song from K.K. - it blows my mind that they signed off the “you would like a new villager” mechanic that goes with the campsite, it’s so repetitive, random, time consuming and utterly boring that I skip campsites entirely. Ugh don't remind me. That stupid card mini game is so damn luck based. This is why I ended up buying Amiibo cards because at least when you finally invite them on the 3rd day and giving them their 3rd crafted item then they will move in, but you decide who to pick out to move out.

I used the campsite to cheese my final villager. I had a specific one in mind that I wanted to spawn and a specific villager I wanted to kick out. It's so painfully annoying and tedious to get the rng correct (to spawn the villager, to keep talking to them to get a move in option, win the stupid card game, AND get the correct villager to move out). It took 7 hours to get it all correct.... The amount of times I had to read about the their dad used to reheat over a campfire to then immediately saying they've never been camping or hate camping....By then end I honestly kind of hate the villager.

I never played animal crossing before NH so I dont miss anything but we do need our villagers personality to have more.. Personality. I find that the normal villagers while cutest have bland houses and aren’t interesting at all… but then that kinda spreads for the rest of my digital buddies. If the personality’s maybe we’re given a glow up I think that would help out the game

I miss the old design philosophy Nintendo had in mind when it came to some of the older Animal Crossing games. The original series producer wanted to emulate his emotions when moving away from his small rural town (and family and friends) to a new city, all on his own. Making new friends, accomplishing himself over responsibilities, tasks and obstacles. At first, you’re just a young adult moving away from home and trying to get your foot in the door on life. You’re never more important or held to any sort of pedestal over your animal neighbors, everyone has their own struggles in life. You may think you’re special but you’re but a resident of this small town like everyone else. Contrast that to modern animal crossing. You’re an all-powerful deity that your animal neighbors literally worship. Everything is entirely up to solely you, the protagonist. You get to decide where people live, who gets to stay on the island and who has to leave, everything. You decide who gets to plant flowers by their house, you decide where public services are located, and you even decide what your neighbors wear for christ’s sake. The original design philosophy has since been trampled over in the name of customization and player freedom, trading substance for open-endedness, trading quality for quantity. That’s what I like about AC gamecube. It’s much more like an honest struggle when it comes to succeeding in your new animal life.

I’ve been getting back into wild world and new leaf recently and it just makes New Horizons lack of interactions even more glaring. My wild world friends regularly came up to me to gossip, share letters, ask me about how to help villagers, things like that. In new leaf they did more of the same, and even if you have multiple villagers with the same personalities they all feel different. New horizons has the problem of if you have one smug villager for example, you’ve literally had them all. I just find it so frustrating because I feel similar to you, I don’t really care about talking to my animals all that much, I’ve heard all of the conversations before. Yes they’ve added some new dialog which is appreciated don’t get me wrong, but it’s more if the same and it’s so disappointing

Not really something from previous games (maybe it is I haven't played the other games except a little bit of wild world) but I think it would be nice if they could code villager specific dialogue. I noticed when going through the villager wiki that a lot of villagers have their own aspirations and I think it would be nice if we could hear about them when we become friends with our villagers. I know it would take a lot of coding, so it probably wouldn't happen but I think it would be a nice way to differentiate each personality further.

Can we talk about how the programming for the villagers is also flawed? I seen my villagers do their daily exercise in front of buildings, sometimes they work in place when objects or fences are around, and also they tend to block your way when you're trying to terraform. Other wise, it can get a bit boring. There are now a couple of ones on my island that I can't get to move. Playing NL and NH at the same time now, I do admit that I romanticized the villagers in NL a bit. NH's seem actually more alive since they do stuff and not just walk around all-day aimlessly. Having said that, I do miss interactions like hide and seek especially. I am attached to my main island villagers and I actually enjoy trying to coax new dialogue out of them with outfits etc which led to some fun discoveries. I actually time-travelled excessively on my 2nd island to free a space there after allowing one of my mains to leave and suddenly realizing that I ABSOLUTELY would miss him. Now he lives on the 2nd island and it makes me happy lol More interactivity with items and yourself like as you said giving you the option to request a task would go a long way, though.

Fetch quests are something that I think would be incredibly fun to have. I also think it would be nice if villagers had more that they could ask you to do, instead of just cycling through the usual requests of delivering a present or needing you to catch a fish. Maybe it's just me, but I remember constantly being asked for stuff in Wild World and it made me relieved that it's been toned down in New Horizons. Still, while my neighbours ask me to give stuff to others due to a fight or something quite often, the request for specific insects and bugs, or just playing a little treasure hunting minigame feels quite rare As for dialogues, I find myself discovering more unique ones after talking to them a few times throughout the day. I still run into the same conversations mentioned in comments and this video, but there are a number of times when I get caught off guard on dialogue I didn't see. An example is Ozzie being annoyed with wind chimes and he took out the frustration on me. Like jeez, I've never seen him so angry before Or perhaps I'm just forgetful and you guys have run into that same sort of random dialogue already? I tend to be wrong a lot, lol Although, it does feels like more conversations have been added after not playing for months It would be cool to do more activities with them at least

Ideas for an update: 1. Make it so that villagers can naturally like or not like you based on what you do in the game, for example if you have tons of flowers on your island or water them frequently, villagers with the nature hobby (for example Zucker) they will like you more and if you don't your friendship could naturally lower of stay the same 2. Give villagers the ability to not like you, this would only work for villagers ho naturally move in via move in queue, these villagers are more likely to be provoked by you pushing them, they will spawn far away from your house, will take more friendship points to become friends with, and are more likely not give you medicine, not ask you for favors, ask for you stop chatting with you, and their birthdays will appear later on the bulletin board, with this in mind, they will still be grateful for any gifts and gifts will give you their normal amount of friendship points 3. Improve villager to villager relationships, this is the fun part, for villagers that are good friends you can see them chat more, along with giving each other gifts, hanging out with each other, sitting together, walking together, them both approaching, or ignoring you, and more. While villagers that hater each other will go off at each other, "Borrow" stuff, plant pitfall seeds outside each others houses, and ignore each other 4. "Minigames" that will randomly be done with your villagers, and I am not talking about the poopy treasure hunts that take two seconds if you already dug up your fossils for the day, like i want to see the 3 on 3 basketball that Dom and Diana always talk about, it feels like I am missing out on an opportunity to bond with my villagers 5. The ability to have SE??!??!??!?!!?!? OK WEVE TALKED ABOUT THIS JAMES!!! AUDIE IS NOT THAT HOT!!!!

I definitely felt this when I returned to my island recently after 11 months off. In past games you could expect villagers to be mad at you, or some even would have completely left! But when I logged on it was only after seeking them out and initiating talking to them that they referenced my absence, but it was just kind of a 'Oh! You were gone for a while, welcome back!' kind of thing, and then things were straight back to normal. I do miss how they had a lot more autonomy to themselves, like you're neighbours and friends do in real life! Gave it a bit more of a hint of what it's like living in the real world. They kind of just feel like little interactive toys now, that look pretty, but once you tire of 'playing' with them you just stick em on the shelf to look at.

So, I play this game too much. You're right in that asking for fetch quests need to return. But I've learned that if you swim a bit, they are more likely to have a thought bubble appear above their head. And IIRC, you can ask the villagers in new leaf for fetch quests. That being said, I do not want to wait for the new animal crossing for them to improve the lack of villager interaction. Nintendo is pretty decent about listening to us when it comes to updates, albeit slow (there's a pandemic, people are dead, etc etc), but I'm sure they'd be able to at least increase the thought bubble/hey player rate, if not add an option of "do you need something." And it seems that most games, not just Animal Crossing, have been increasingly making things easier for those who are new to the series.

I am deeply invested in villager friendships, as this is my first AC game.. But that changed 6 months into playing when I read about there being 8 set personality types & discovering they would all share the same dialogue - I was so shocked & kinda upset that my villagers were kina just vacant vessels that carried 1 of 8 personality traits 💔😭 I know that sounds harsh but hear me out 😂 I still have a strong attachment to all my villagers & refuse to let any leave. The longer I play the more I notice the repetitive dialogue & it's frustrating because it would be so easy to pep up/diversify their dialogue!! I still talk to my villagers every day but once I've got there photo my interest in them definitely wanes :( I kinda wish I'd never read about the personality types lol 😭 Take poor Isabelle for example - she has been given the worst dialogue by far - Literally says 1 of 4 things every. Single. Day. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ How much better would it be to give her 1 new thing a day? It could be as simple as commenting on the weather, or telling us which NPC is visiting that day - she wouldn't even need 365 different promts.. She used to irritate me but now I feel bad for her, because no-one bothered to flesh out her character.. This is why I miss Tom Nook greeting me in the morning - he's a total cutie & he'd always give you a job or direction - I miss those interactions! TLDR: I am strongly attached to my villagers & talk to them every day but I wish the dialogue was more varied.

SPEAKING OF CONNECTIONS TO VILLAGERS... I adore Eugene the Koala. he was my best friend in new leaf and i get emotional thinking about him. i also adored cyrano, marina, rowan, jambette, fauna, knox, even pinky who i couldnt stand i regret letting move out, and so many more... i miss new leaf sm :( i never played the older games so i wasnt around for the meaner villagers but i think new leaf was perfect. villagers were nice without feeling lifeless and occasionally did have their sassy mean moments. if theyd just bring back favors nh would be so much more fun for me.
