The Problem With Headspace, Calm, and All Those Meditation Apps // Meditation has become a multi-billion dollar industry in the U.S., but how well do some of the most popular meditation apps actually work? It depends who you ask. If you're serious about learning meditation or stepping up your practice, watch this video. We'll be discussing five problematic trends with most meditation apps on the market - PLUS, an app that I think is an exception to the rule.
Time Stamps:
0:00 - Intro (what was going to be a calm or headspace app review)
1:48 - #1: Too much focus on self-improvement
3:27 - #2: Promotion of spiritual materialism
4:49 - #3: Venture-backed (means different incentives)
7:08 - #4: Unethical practices in the name of growth
8:54 - #5: Lack of training for insight
10:50 - The only app I would recommend: Waking Up with Sam Harris
14:03 - Closing thoughts
WAKING UP:
►30-Day Free Trial to Waking up With Sam Harris: bit.ly/3bp8hKn
(the only meditation app I would recommend)

Totally agreed. As a meditator and a branding professional I understand the dilemma here… meditators understand the huge benefits of meditation and are always looking for ways to tell the world… and what better way to spread the experience then through a digital platform like an app… but apps take money to develop and market, so it’s at this point that real challenge of keeping it “pure” begins… perhaps some things just can’t and shouldn’t be fully and translated into the digital marketplace? Maybe they need to remain “analog” until we have a better and more honest relationship between spirituality and capitalism… like all you can eat sushi… always a bad idea. 😆 Great channel! Keep up the great work!

Chogyam Trungpa was brilliant but very controversial . I was friends with a number of his first generation students many of whom now in their 70s , some in there early 80s . She didn't say his name right . From what always heard , it's pronounced Shoh gyum . I originally got into meditation a long time ago through his Shambhala Centers . I haven't been involved with them in a very long time even though I still know Shambhala people ... and the teachers and instructors from Shambhala Philadelphia . What I liked about their approach is you could either go in and learn Tibetan Buddhism or you could just learn meditation for the sake of meditation . We had many magical experiences there . Wonderful . Please look for the books by Chogyam Trungpa ... most of them are through Shambhala Publications . A good place to start is the SHAMBHALA WARRIOR ... that book is deceptively simple and you should always keep it . His book , Spiritual Materialism ... yes excellent . I used to have most of his books but one by one they vanished when I would move . Another good one is by Lobsang ( pronounced Lo sang ) Samten , a Tibetan Buddhist Lama in Philadelphia and he used to be the right-hand man to the Dalai Lama . He was also in the movie Kundun . Ancient Teachings For Modern Times is his book . I have not yet read the book he wrote subsequent to that . Some people are learning meditation through the Hindu teachers ... also very good . Buddhism is an outgrowth of Hinduism . The reason I prefer those two branches of meditation is because they seem to somehow have the edge and know more about meditation as well as the nature of reality much more than people who are westerners I am sorry to say . It's like I once heard a Tibetan Lama say " I've been studying Buddhism since I was about four years old and still I know very little about it ... but these westerners study with a teacher for a couple years and suddenly they are experts ". I'm sorry but when it comes to something as important as my mind and meditation I prefer my money and attention more on these humble people who really are not about material things and don't really have the agenda that I've seen with too many westerners . I used to like Sam Harris ... I'm sure he's a good guy , but I lost interest in him very quickly several years ago . Some people have a certain type of ambition , I don't know how to explain it ... one can feel it with these westerners and even though I myself am a modern American Woman I love the humility and childlike innocence of the Tibetan Buddhist lamas . For something more pared-down and less exotic they could always go with Zen Buddhism which is also wonderful . Again I try to avoid these really ambitious westerners who strive for ascendancy ... I'm not talkin about spiritual ascendancy but those trying to be at the top of the heap ... of the game .

well said, the use of a phone with meditation is ridiculous. the app you plugged at the end...I felt that was really strange you suggested an app after all that, like this whole video was a set up for an app advertisement, but its ok because its a mom and pop operation. I feel that was a little crazy ha ha. Please remember meditation is free for everyone and you certainly don’t need an app or phone!

I started my meditation journey trough headspace and started the waking up about a year ago . Id wager headspace is easier for beginners and the gamification makes it easier to make a habit of practice . To sum it up headspace is easier to get into but it gets stale after a while, meanwhile waking up demands a bit more of the user but its also more rewarding .

Agree 100%, mediation should be something that is part of you and who you are and not triggered or scheduled around an app. Yes there are some useful ones but there should be a point where you should be able to reach that state on your own. So many answers are already within us but we are "trained" to look outward for solutions.

So many of your critiques really resonated with me. I've lived with depression for years, and tried one of those mainstream meditation apps. it didn't work for me, and that reinforced the negative thoughts that I was just fundamentally too "broken" to be fixed by this supposedly effective method. I'm coming at mindfulness in a way that works better for me. I'll definitely be checking out Waking Up.

I started off with Calm 18 months ago, picked up Waking Up 9 months ago. I find it far superior. Other apps trying to target a specific problem with meditations centred mainly around observing the breath with a different voice over plot just didn't get me to a point of achieving anything. Waking Up with its main non dualistic approach and recognising that everything that happens is an appearance in consciousness covers all conditions with one practice type. I feel I have made great progress with it.

I was going reload an app for 2021, but I'm glad I watched your video to hear about gameifying meditation. In 2019 I meditated every day straight for a year and was pleased with my stars on Insight Timer. Then I missed a day toward the beginning of 2020. At first I would cheat and backdate a session, but eventually, I missed a few more days and my stars went down to zero. I felt bad about cheating and losing all those stars to the point I associated my meditation practice with thoughts of remembering how I had to cheat to keep my stars high and how I once had so many stars and then missed a session and now had no stars. To be honest I'd see other meditators on the app and compare how many stars I had to them.
@JulianneKeu

Insight Timer was the other app I reviewed for this video! But I didn't mention it because Headspace and Calm already have over 70% of the market share. I've heard many good things about Insight Timer, though (namely that its pricing policies are less predatory). I also hear you re: gamification... back when Waking Up had "streaks," I found myself fudging my stats a little bit just to maintain my streak >.>. I'm glad they ended up getting rid of it. Such a small feature but so impactful in the grand scheme of things. Meditation is one of those things you have to just commit to doing .. until you eventually feel "off" for not doing it. Sorta like brushing your teeth!

The gameification of some of these apps!!! I didn't know there was a name for it but here we are. I felt this exact way about an app I was using daily...to build my habit of reading my digital bible. I was doing well and felt great about my progress until I missed a day. My 200+ day streak was gone and I felt like crap...for not reading my bible! I gave the developer feedback on this but they haven't changed it and I've stopped using it as much. I also noticed it with some exercise apps. Thank you for mentioning this!

Saw your video on tapering of antidepressants. It’s inspired me to start weening off Zoloft. I started 3 years ago when I was suffering from depression caused from my mom’s death and my separation from my ex wife. At the same time, I discovered Taoism which literally saved my life. I was at the brink of suicide and destroyed the relationships around me. Now, I have a good relationship with my ex wife and a good life. Although, I have a need for finding out who I truly am. I used meditation apps years ago and have been practicing on my own since then. I recently looked back at the apps as I'm looking for a tool to help someone who is interested in starting meditation but after practicing on my own for this time I was struck by how obviously the apps were designed to extract money by selling spiritualism. That is one of the unfortunate side effects of capitalism is that there is that constant pull to reduce every good thing into a product to be bought and sold.

Before I ironically found remembering to meditate stressful with the constant headspace notifications and I really don’t enjoy the ‘streaks’ but this makes perfect sense as to why it was not working for me now. Thank you for having introduced me to the waking up app I can already tell it will serve me a lot better than headspace ever could. I like how there are less meditations on this app as, like you say, it is easier to practise meditation using the same practise repeatedly rather than the chaos of finding the right headspace meditation before even getting started.

I finished the introductory course in Waking Up, and honestly... I was utterly confused. It was way, waaay too hard for me to grasp. Sam gives you more questions than answers, which might be fine for advanced meditators, but is absolutely confusing for beginners. Additionally, some of the exercises are just hard to understand and follow, if you're inexperienced, so in the end I was really frustrated and felt I did not learn much during these 30 days. Overall I would not recommend this app to any beginner, but maybe that's a problem with myself, not with the app...

I agree about the meditation apps. In the beginning Headspace was simpler and the guy that started it or maybe was the corporate face of it had been a Buddhist monk which seemed to lend some credibility to it. Unfortunately the goal oriented structure and ailment specific meditations are counter to what meditation, at least for me , is about which is going inward, noticing and eventually dropping all that stuff. As to Sam Harris, his associations with Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss etc...drip with arrogance, ego and contempt. Also counter to what meditation is about. I recently saw a video of his however where he describes his experience on a hero dose of mushrooms and he seemed almost humbled. Anyway, keep up the good work.

Yeah.. I completely understand his critics. It also mustn't be easy to have a full record of everything you've ever said and written about on the Internet... I like to believe there is room for growth. Why should public figures be exempt from this? These past few weeks I've realized I've been meditating pretty often, a habit I used to want to establish, now came naturally. This is because I started a new job, and with that came a lot of anxiety. So I searched on KZfaq meditations for anxiety, that led to meditating every morning, always with the same meditation, until I found meditation music, and just started trying to do it on my own. After I realized I could now establish that habit that was coming pretty natural, I thought to myself "well, looks like noe would be a good moment to download a meditation app, now that I might actually use it". I downloaded 3 meditation apps, two of which were Headspace and Calm. I found myself going to sleep an hour later from my usual bedtime, using my phone in bed, scrolling on the infinite yet not so diverse library of meditations, video instructions, yoga exercises, stories, music, everything. It was almost overwhelming. I couldn't find a meditation I felt was good for me, they were either too long, or not a meditation at all. I think it's good that they give alternatives, like bed time stories or courses, but that wasn't what I was looking for. It was kinda confusing, and I ended up feeling strangely overwhelmed by two of the most popular meditation apps. Apps I've wanted to use for a while. Don't get me wrong, I might still try them out a couple more times, I jus started my free trial. But anyway, that's been my experience so far. I really appreciate your words, you're very well spoken and sound very wise. Everything you pointed out was honestly the truth, I can even see it on myself. Thank you.

@@JulianneKeu KZfaq recommended it to me. I believe it was the how to trip alone video, but I'm not sure. I have been interested in microdosing for like two years now and last year I tried it for the first time. After about two moths, I had to stop though because it got too intense. However I'm definitely going to do it again later this year. I also had my first trip with a bigger dose last year (both with LSD).

I use headspace almost everyday but whenever I get off streak it makes me want to quit. So I’m constantly restarting, over and over and over again-. It gets frustrating to be honest. Sometimes I just use soundscapes found on KZfaq to meditate too and I personally get way more of experience out of it. I like headspace but my issue is that streak system, because if I’m extremely tired or ill and I don’t meditate- my streak is gone and it’s so frustrating. Although, I’m still way early into the practice of meditation- I’m wanting to read books and learn the history of it as well. I also realized that a lot of their courses use the exact same system- to focus on my breathing and visualize. However, is a good learners guide on how to meditate but, moving forward I’ll look for better options.

There has not been, there is not and there will not be only one right way of doing things or getting to something. That is simple: non of us aims the same. You have to find your own way and of course, meanwhile have to be aware of what you are doing. Just take it easy, enjoy and be free of any prejudices.

Hey Julianne! Thanks for this video and sharing this perhaps not so popular viewpoint. I've been wanting to establish a meditation habit, but have failed so far, so I've been contemplating an app such as headspace or calm (or dig around and find another) but I had some misgivings about using an app (particularly a "popular" app like headspace) for exactly the reasons you have articulated in this video. You're inspiring me to stop doubting myself and to encourage the urge to establish a meditation routine ON MY OWN. That being said... I still would like some guidance in navigating methods. Method is not everything, but it is important. And I tend not to gravitate towards an option just because it's popular. I seek for true knowledge--even if that presents more challenge. My goals for meditation are NOT for self-help, but for insight and spiritual development. Because of that, like you, my focus is not calming in and of itself. If I want to calm myself, I can calm myself. I'm looking for ways to park my human ego--the monkey-mind--the mental chatter, to push through to a different sort of mental state AT WILL. I believe I have an innate tendency, but like most practices that truly matter innate tendency is only a fraction of the process. Practice, method and discipline--repetition are the keys. Perhaps I'll give Sam's app a try. I had heard of it before. It's nice, if, as you mention, you have complete access during the trial period. Great video. Very pertinent content. Thank you! (I'm also going to recommend you to my daughter.)

No way! Talk about serendipity. I agree - one of the first things I noticed about Calm was the way it tried to trick me into automatically getting a year's subscription. That says so much about a company and the way it views its users. Waking Up doesn't automatically renew after your trial.. (at least, not when I used it). Give it a go - then I'd be curious to hear you thoughts about it afterward!

There was definitely a lot of food for thought in this video. I've recently begun trying to level up my meditation practice. Admittedly, I use headspace and I'm not sponsored nor work for the company. Just two points I would like to touch upon. The first, the difficulty in carrying the practice once you're not using a specific pack. You're right it is difficult, at first, but with time the lessons become ingrained and you find yourself using techniques in real life scenarios. I revisit already completed packs as a refresher or if I feel like there's a motif in my life that's relevant. Another point is the gamification. I think there's a lesson in it. Yes you do feel bad for "missing" a day of practice, but I've let that idea go because I'm human and I miss days. When I feel "bad" i'm ultimately missing the point of why I started to work on mental health. Ultimately it's a number that I attach meaning to for better or worse. I will however though think about ways to contemplate and use that calm state that was a good tidbit of info.

Thank you for your integrity. Your take on the ethics of of app marketing is much needed and appreciated ❤️. In the same way that global warming is the gradual erosion of the planet resulting from uncontrolled production, growth, and management of ‘physical’ resources in the pursuit of monetary profits, the gamification and mainstreaming of personal development (i.e., through apps) is a type of disregard for the individual ‘intellectual/emotional/mental’ resource that will erode the brain … gradually and one human at a time.

2 yrs late for this vid but I soooo agree on everything! I kinda stopped meditating regularly bc those guided meditations were annoying the shit out of me - like u have just taken 10 deep breaths and begun to ease into a state of mental relaxation and then the narrator pulls u right out of it again by making you THINK about your "problem" again or making you think about some theme or whatever (like "set an intention for the day" or whatever) - so I felt like these apps do the opposite of calmness meditation. I used to do mediation for myself where I just focused on my breath or sounds around me, just relaxing your grip of thought so to say. Worked like magic! Then started using meditation apps again (when I first started consciously using meditation as an actual practice, I had used headspace, so I thought why not try picking it back up?) and the narrator's annoyed me so much on 70% of the days that I used those apps. So yeah those apps were not actually helpful tbh But your video on this was great!

Many of the points raised are applicable to almost everything. Gamification, money-backed company, "this doesn't work for me", etc. The whole point of all eastern theologies is to transcend the physical to connect back to the Singularity that permeates the Universe. So Idk how Atheism is "truer to the traditional roots of meditation", it's the complete opposite of "true" meditation lmao.

very wise lady and what you speak is 100 percent the truth. this is a reason why i never liked going hiking when i used to live in the US, people would dress with super expensive clothes and top the line Jeep vehicles just to literally show off to the rest, whatever happened to walk around nature for the sake to just walk around in nature, do you really have to invest in hiking gear ? humans trying to conquer nature is such a joke, such ego driven attitudes.

Liked this video a lot, I think it's a very fair set of warnings, and it's important because reaching a dead end in meditation can be so demotivating, and these apps aren't being careful enough. I'd tend to recommend finding an instructor or set of guided meditations online that you can trust. For me lately it's been Rob Burbea. If I could add one thing to your video, it would be how powerful Loving-Kindness (metta) meditation is, and how it works directly with insight practice. Extended thoughts: I do worry that descriptions like this of insight can be taken too intellectually. I worry someone without direct experience of insight may see it as irrelevant to their own life, or that they already "get it" logically. It's hard to describe just how powerful direct experience of insight is, and how it opens the heart, brings peace and tranquility, while providing a clue to the true nature of things. It's truly beautiful, and can happen quite a bit in a single sitting. You can see how the Buddha realized (paraphrase) "this is the way to end suffering" when you experience it yourself. So based on that opinion, you can tell how much I agree that calming meditation is just the beginning. But it really is a challenge, and this is where it becomes really personal, in that you have to decide how deep you want to go, and stick with it, and I definitely still struggle with that 😅
