Some people are just bad people for no good reason, and that’s likely what they were going for.

That's what I wanted to tell people, but sadly, it doesn't make for interesting content. Some POS's have to have a motive in order for the story to be good. Some approach this with a dose of reality, which is what I prefer to use when I write my own stories.

It's sorta like "A Series of Unfortunate Events," but with magenta-headed ragdoll 3D goofballs. Fine enough for what it is, I think. The über-dangerous vacation bits were some of my favorites. And Jane's a sweetheart.

Yeah I immediately thought "A Series of Unfortunate Events ripoff." That explains why the bad parents (guardians) are lovey-dovey and unconcerned with the children, and the Orphan Services is the equivalent of VFD taking kids away and training them to be crime fighters.

I really liked this movie. I found it silly and fun, and took it as I take every fantasy: with a grain of salt, or a spoonful of sugar. 😁

I watched this movie with my family and I honestly didn’t like it very much. I agree that the whole orphan services being the antagonist of the movie wasn’t very bad. I had assumed the orphan services was a stand in for CPS and if it was the movie did a piss poor job with it. I think that it was extremely stigmatizing especially when you brought up how parents that abuse their kids tell their kids not to tell anyone because CPS might get involved ans yeah it is true. My parents used to do this but basically when they fucked up or did something bad to us they’d tell us not to tell anyone cause that person might tell another person and it’d get to CPS and they would take us away from them. While I do think that CPS isn’t the best showing it like this isn’t very helpful at all. When I watched the scene with the Nanny hitting the kid with a pillow I was fucking pissed. I know it was a pillow but you don’t hit someone when they’re being self deprecating n shit that would just make the situation worse. I’ve seen this before in another show with a character being self deprecating and the other character hitting him and I just do not get it at all. And bringing up that you brought up how his parents would hit him to punish him it would come off to him as the nanny punishing him for being self deprecating. For this scene it just basically feels like she’s frustrated/mad with him for being self deprecating and taking it out on him which technically she is. And talking about the tough love thing there was this book I read for school Trevor Noah: Born a Crime and there was this one quote that I really liked “But it doesn’t always work, because you’re giving the kid tough love when maybe he just needs love. You’re trying to teach him a lesson, and now that lesson is the rest of his life.”

I was honestly very dissatisfied with the ending where the parents were eaten by that shark. I would much rather they have suffered a lot more.

25:14 the book and film are two separate pieces of media, so the grandparents are canon in the book but not the film

In regards to why the parents are awful when they seemingly have nice parents themselves it could be that the grandparents were abusive when the parents were young but aren't to the kids. This is something that happened in my own household. My gran was very abusive towards my mother and had a big impact on her own parenting style for better and for worse. But she is a brilliant grandparent. Loves to babysit, is very encouraging and loving. I think it's because maybe she chilled out in her old age or she learned from parenting my mum or (and I think most likely) the responsibility you have as a grandparent isn't as much as it is a parent (usually depending on the family). Kids can also be a sore spot cause they are a reflection of you. But with grandparents any bad behaviour can be blamed on the parents. So there is not so much of their own identity mixed in with parenting their grand kids. I don't know if this makes sense and I highly doubt this is what the book was going for but I thought it might be interesting to think about. Gives you more comments for the algorithm anyway 😋

My best friend of over a decade was beaten on a regular basis by her mother, as were her sisters. They were also taught how to shoplift and steal from neighbours, if they were ever caught and brought back to their mother they were beaten even worse as punishment for 'embarrassing' her. As a grandmother, she is totally different. I think each to their own, but I personally would not let my own mum be in my sons life if she treated me the way my best friends mum did her. My bio father turned a blind eye to alot of things our first step mother did to us with the excuse that she had mental health issues and I haven't spoken to him in 17 years, he hasn't met my son nor is he allowed to given that history and his lack of patience for my ASD...my son was diagnosed last year and is way more highly strung with it than I ever was.

The movie was a sad adaptation of the book. It really sucks because the book was really good, and there’s a lot of things cut out from the movie that were in the book. The animation style is really good but that’s all the positives I can say about it. What a sad attempt. :/

From personal experience dealing with CPS I'm California. I totally understand why they are portrayed as a major villain. I will personally disagree with your opinion on cps at least how they are run by San Bernardino back in 2013. It was a very traumatic experience for my entire family and it was all over an accident. My wife and I were made out by the case workers to look like murderers despite the only thing we were guilty of was trying to be the best parents we could be. I was active duty stationed at fort Irwin at the time. Also I wasn't even involved in the incident as I was on duty. But they still tried to attack my capability to care and protect my children. I found a template online for a document that I could type up objecting to and correcting the claims made in the case workers report. I tore that thing apart correcting their claims so hard I was going after grammar and returning fire on the case workers capabilities to understand differences in building structures. My public defender told me I needed to be nice 😄. Within a week of my submission I had my kids back.

You know, if the Willoughby’s parents dislike children so much, why have four of them? How could they of dislike children so much but didn’t have the decency to wear condoms and take birth control so they wouldn’t have them in the first place? And if they disliked children so much, why didn’t they leave the kids at the hospital? I mean, they seemed like the type of people to do that. Just saying, the two should never have had a kid, let alone four if they disliked children so much. Then again, that’s me reading into a children’s’ movie too much 😅
