Jordan didn't only win the race one-two, but was also zhe onl team to still have three working cars after the race, while several teams had all three heavily damaged, including Ferrari. Benetton if I remember correctly even had all three completely destroyed.

About Trulli's sixth place: he had engine issues for the majority of the race (that's why even Diniz outlapped him) but decided to keep going. And proved to be the best decision they made all year: Just for that race Prost ended up ahead of Minardi and Tyrrell in the standings, avoiding being the worst team in 1998.

I remember this race like it was yesterday. I was (still am) a huge McLaren and Mika Hakkinen fan and did not like M. Schumacher at all. With Mika already out of the race, that contact between Schumacher and Coulthard brought smile on my face. Then the drama how Schumacher ran to the McLaren garage and wanted to fight. Two weeks later, I remember a photograph in a newspaper when the two shook hand and put the incident behind them. Different times. I miss those races, and F1 era.

The race that changed F1 was San Marino '94. In post perspective and during the race itself Belgium '98 was extremely entertaining. Nowadays noone knows anymore 'bout the fact that each and every team went with 3 functional cars to the tracks. There was a 3rd "T-car" most times suited to driver No. 1 which did help a lot in terms of restarting when sort of caroms happened.

One of the best races ever. Love a good crash back in the days when racing incidents were allowed to happen without ridiculous penalties for, "Causing a collision", AKA, "Making a reasonable passing attempt that didn't quite work out."

When I clicked on this video, I knew it was Spa 1998... I still remember watching it live, it was incredible that so many cars were involved in this crash. Brought back memories, mostly seeing Coulthard's car with no front tires fly left to right on the screen. Unmistakable.

Brilliant performance by Damon like Hungaroring year earlier. Race was incomparable madness. Watched this in live and that was absolutely breathtaking thriller.

I saw Schumi and Coulthard crash before my eyes, jumped over the fence after the race to grab some pieces of their cars. Had a bunch of nice parts, but was so stupid to trow them in the bin a few years later 😭😭😭

I saw one program where they'd reviewed this race. The Jordan mechanics, after the race, discovered a crack in Damon's wheel which they said would have probably put him out of the race if it had gone on for another couple of laps. Also, at the original start Coulthard lost control when he got wheel spin when he went over a drain cover, it was only after he'd started to spin that he then got tagged by Irvine and then half the field. If that was today they'd have to cancel the race seeing as they don't run spare cars anymore. The luckiest person that day was actually a spectator who very nearly got hit by one of the flying wheels, which probably would have killed him!!!!

I am loving those mass crashes (as long as nobody dies or gets injuries for the rest of their lives). And sure looking at this mass crashses made me worried... but I can't stop looking at it, knowing they al survived with no or minor injuries.

Oh how i miss the heavy rain races where the true masters shine. I also quite clearly remember that race and how furious i was with Coulthard. I was just 11 years old at that time, but at that exact moment i understood quite clearly the meaning of the word "furious". I was such a big Schumacher fan that i was crossing my fingers during every single race. Somehow in my frustration with the car crash i broke my thumb. Can't forget that race even if i wanted to. But really - rain an formula 1 go together like beer and stake.

Imola '94 was the worst...it cost the lives of two drivers, one of which ranks amongst the very best of all time, spectators & marshalls were injured, the race went on even though there was a death at the even, they were not supposed to have that race after Rolands death

Michael did not look like someone who wanted to overtake, rather someone who expected the driver in front to be faster. Telemetry showed that DC was at 50% (don't trust my memory for the exact number ;) ) while Michael was at 100% coming out of the corner. Was that deliberate from DC? Maybe not, but it certainly was intentionally frustrating MS. As mentioned below, DC did eventually, years later, acknowledge that what he did was wrong.

I remember watching this race live. I was in Scotland at the time. 25 years ago. Man I'm old.

Saw this race live, one of the most dramatic ever. Coulthard either did it on purpose or was extremely careless to taxi on the race line in those conditions. Today he would have been penalised for impeding another driver, but those were different times. It cost Schumacher the title, and showed how on edge things were at Ferrari during those bitter years. Looking back, it is almost miraculous how Schumacher's temperament eventually worked out with Ferrari. As for Coulthard, kept doing these small errors or mistakes, impeding him from reaching the heights where his raw speed could otherwise had led.

But you said that Jos Verstappen had mechanical drama (blown engine) on lap 8 and subsequently retired, but then at the end of the video you say that only one vehicle bowed out due to mechanical failure, which was the Mernadi Ford. So which is it?

I must have missed this point - but exactly how did this race "change Formula 1 forever"?

And Spa almost got deleted of the calendar this year. It's because South Africa was unable to complete it's race track that we still have a race in Belgium. Next year is probably the last time they will race there. It's also a drivers favorite. The race this year was incredible with overtakes in almost every lap and that in comparison with those street tracks where the standing at lap 10 is also the final standing at the end of the race.

I remember seeing footage at the time of Coultard on the formation lap with something flying off his car, probably the bit of suspension that failed at La Source - the real cause of Coultard veering violently to the right! Stop the video at 2:58 and you'll se his left front is almost off. Go Back and stop it at 2:46 and you'll see Coultard on the outside of the track with Irvine behind at to the right of him. Now you could argue that Irvine hit him, forcing him into the barrier and that would be why Coultard's left front suspension had failed. If that was the case then the momentum of his rear end would have sent him into a spin and he would have hit the right-hand barrier arse-first. Now stop the video at 3:06 and you'll see Irvine just coming into frame (with his rear wing cartwheeling down the grass and his front wing yet to come off after coliding with Schumi's brother or was it Graham Hill's son?), had Irvine colided with Coultard then he would have been in front or at least alongside Coultard in order for him to send Coultard's front left into the barrier and he would have appeared in frame a lot sooner than he did, considering that was 8 seconds after Coultard veered to the right and 3 seconds after Coultard in his 1 wheeled bobsled appeared from the mist that is highly unlikely. How's this for a scenario: Irvine was to the rear and right of Coultard, Coultard's suspension fails, veering him violently across the track and into the right-hand barrier. As this happens Irvine brakes to avoid a collision and is rear-ended, causing his rear wing to come off.

You simply forgot something to tell. I remember that race very well! Coulthart had a lot of problems with his car and he went into the box and parked. Everybody thought he was out. But then a lot of laps later he appeared in the race again. With 10 laps after all the others. He managed that Schumacher came after him and then he drove a kind of fast, but Schumacher could catch up to him. And then suddenly Coulthart breaked way to early and hard, just in the same second, as Michael intended to overtake. In the spray Michael could not see this and crashed. Imho this crash was clearly intended by David and the team. They sent him out (with 10 laps back) on the track only for that reason, to stop Schumacher, because otherwise Michael would have won the championship. There was no other reason to take a far overlapped car back into the race. That never happened before and never after that incident!

IMO the decision to not allow Ralf to race Damon for the win backfired on Eddie Jordan in the long run. Sure, he had Frentzen being an unlikely title challenger in '99 and finished 3rd in the constructors' standings (behind Ferrari and McLaren), but after that the team slipped down the pecking order before undergoing an ownership and name change almost every year in the mid 2000's (Jordan became Midland F1, then Spyker and then Force India, which stuck around for about 10 years and after that from the team's ashes Racing Point was born and it evolved into it's final form as of 2023 - Aston Martin Racing). Meanwhile although Ralf had to endure the 1999 season in the midfield with an inferior car and underpowered engine (which was basically 1997-spec Renault engine) for the year 2000 BMW would come with works support and Williams with Ralf and Juan-Pablo Montoya (who made his debut in 2001) became the closest rivals to Michael Schumacher and Ferrari's dominance in the early 2000's

The issue nowadays is there’s too much control. The cars don’t break down, tyres force managed pace, they don’t race in the rain and DRS makes overtaking too easy. There’s not enough jeopardy so the races are almost scripted, doesn’t feel like true racing. You don’t want undue risk but there has to be some risk. I miss wet races.

If time travel is a reality, it would be interesting to see any F1 race in a calendar year if Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Juan Manuel Fangio, Fernando Alonso, Jackie Stewart, Max Verstappen, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kimi Raikkonen, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Nikki Lauda, Mika Hakkinen, Nelson Piquet & Jack Brabham all race together in their prime ages... I'm sure the seats at all venues would be overbooked even if ticket prices are 10 times more expensive than currently 🏆 🤗
