Andy Griffith was a fine actor, but producers seemed to have a hard time finding believable romantic partners for him. The Helen character was by far the longest lasting, so AG must have felt that it worked (I'm sure he had final say in these matters).

I always noticed that sometimes Helen would really lay into Andy,like the time he accused her of " runnin with" that school administrator guy.

And a lot of the episodes, and I’ve watched them all multiple times. She was always a hothead and I know that’s the storyline. She was always mad and upset and when she was, she would call Andy Mr. Taylor.

Some men like women to stand up to them. Let's face it, sometimes they need it. I believe this is what Andy loved about her. They were a perfect pair

I always felt that Ellie Walker had the worst attitude of all Andy's girlfriends, we saw more from Helen Crump because she was in many more episodes (think about it) than Ellie Walker. If Ellie had stayed on the show we would have saw many more episodes of her bad attitude. As for Gloria who came to visit because of her broken engagement, why was Andy trying to entertain her because she came to visit Aunt Bea not Andy. She refused to dance with Goober who was her date but choose to dance with Andy instead. In that case I can understand why Helen was angry because Andy did not have the sense to realize what was going on. I love TAGS but I also realize that it is fiction, with writers and actors. I did like the Helen Crump character. May she R,I.P

I can't stand that character she played. Almost ran over Barney after lashing out at Andy over the history. I can't stand the fun girls either. But Helen is never happy, very rarely smiles, and gets mad all the time.

The fact that Opie calls her “Old Lady Crump” goes to show how many single, younger, women are in Mayberry. If you ask me, it’s perfectly understandable why Andy would be into her imo! 😂👍🏼

There wasn't much back story to Helen's life.... after all TAGS was a family comedy. I would infer that her father must have been a philanderer, and thus expected the worst. And Andy Taylor to his credit, always did go for the strong willed careeer woman... Miss Ellie was a pharmacist, and, on occasion, she gave Andy a piece of her mind, when he tried to talk down to her. And Nurse Peggy was also educated, strong-willed and from a rich family, and there were a couple of episodes where she also let him have it. Let's face it, Andy may have been an Alpha male with hss bros, but when it came to women, he was a cuck.

I could not see why someone who looked like Any Griffith would have relationships with so many pretty women. However, Helen did have a bad temper and would have been difficult to live with in the long run.

Helen Crump confronting Andy concerning the school work was 100% right. It interfered with her work ethic as a teacher! The WOMEN were 100% right of becoming angry with Andy AND Barney when seen with OTHER women.

It’s TV not real life. She was hired for the one episode and went over well and the Writer’s continued that way. After watching the show for 60 years her shrew episodes are my fav.

I'll bet there was some pretty good makeup sex in the episode when Andy yells at Helen when she had a male friend visiting in town, and Andy yelled at her and said you want to run with me or do you want to run with him! LOL that was funny as hell and it was real. Television has started to get more real then they had gone away from Ward and June Cleaver and Father Knows Best and couples never having any real blow up like a male and female wood. Jackie Gleason set the stage with Ralph Kramden and Alice, and admitting that's sometimes a man feels like hitting his woman, when he threatened to send her to the Moon a million different times with one punch. Andy never quite threatened any physical violence yeah, but boy did he have to jump through some hoops when Helen got pissed off
