I went to Hawaii when I was 15. I remember how beautiful all the places we stayed and visited were. Then I thought to myself, where all all the actual Hawaiians? I eventually found our when we took a ride to the rural areas and saw all the shacks. I remember feeling so awful and thinking something wasn't right with that. That was about 14 years ago. 😳

After 23 years on Oahu, my family and I moved to the east coast. Everyone here says “ can’t believe you would leave Hawaii”. Wish I could just show this video. I’m a teacher and my wife is a nurse and we still could never afford to buy a home or save money for our child’s college education. Purchased a 3 bedroom home on 2 acres for 300k only 10 minutes from the beach. Not an easy decision, but I do feel our daughter has a better chance at A good education and financial independence in the future. The public schools are #1 in the nation in this state. Life is about trade offs, not solutions it seems. Best of luck to all struggling to make it in da HI

Another example how the school system is failing. Multiple people at KITV had to have been involved in putting this report together, and not one of them was capable enough at basic math to realize a $3 difference from $4 to $7 is not a 54% increase. The average price of eggs in Utah ($4) is approximately 54% of the price of eggs in Hawaii. (4/7=0.57) The average price of eggs in Hawaii is approximately 75% more than the price of eggs in Utah. (7/4=1.75) The milk comparison was bogus too. You should compare basic grocery store brand gallon milk in Utah to similar grocery store brand gallon milk in Hawaii. Comparing the cheapest milk in Utah to an expensive organic brand in Hawaii is not the same. A gallon of milk at Walmart in Utah is $3.38. At Walmart in Hawaii it's $5.67. That's approximately 68% more than in Utah for the same kind of milk.

We visited Oahu in 2021 and it was amazing. We went to eat at IHOP for breakfast and the price was understandably higher than what we would have paid on the mainland (about an $8 increase). My biggest worry is that the prices of things will continue to skyrocket and make it to where not many people will be able to visit Hawaii and all those businesses will suffer even more.

The more beautiful the state the more it costs to live there. I call that the "beauty privilege tax." I live in Florida so I know. We were doing ok on my husband's pension payout for 34 years of work but he wanted more SS points and went back to work to help pay off our new retirement house early. Inflation has now et up almost all of the margin we wanted and we are still pinching and not doing travel or many fun things. With covid some of that is shut down anyway so I guess a house pay down for now is all we can manage.

If you like the beach and the weather, and have family who have lived here a long time already, can't beat Hawaii. If you want a big house on a huge lot, inexpensive fresh produce and dairy, competitive public schools, lower electric bills, you have to go mainland but you have to pick the right location. The bad thing about the mainland is that the property tax is so much higher like $6,000 a year which is used to run the schools.

Why are they comparing the average prices of milk to the highest prices? Why are they comparing Utah to Hawaii? If you compared Utah to NY or California there would be a big difference as well. They should have shown the average cost for each state, not just the cheapest state. Journalism at its best.
