Christmas came early because this is probably in the top-5 videos that you have ever done. I would encourage everyone that views this video to watch it at least 3 times to make certain they truly understand everything you are saying. Personally, I have been working on using a strong grip, but have had trouble with rotation and forward shaft lean. Either I am not rotating through my swing consistently, or I don't have enough forward shaft lean. All three of these elements are needed to hit a pure golf shot. I think the alignment rod drill is excellent and I will add this to my practice sessions. Thanks a ton for this video.

Thank you, Eric! I struggled with a smothered hook or glancing blow slices the last two years and had no idea why. This fixed it all in one range session and I can now release into the ball as hard as I want w/no fear of hooking the pizz out of it. It doesn't seem to matter where I take the club back. I just pre-set the hands forward with the clubface open at address with a strong grip. It creates a free flowing release that's magical. And when I say free flowing release, I'm talking the body, arms and clubhead. All of those things want to release and your brain knows they're supposed to. If they don't, it's because your brain is making calculations to try to offset an overly closed clubface w/no shaft lean (in my case) which makes me flip or come over the top. If people are conscious about standing at address with the hands forward and how it looks, just activate/start the swing with a forward press so it looks more like one motion. You're a great teacher!

actually "closed clubface " is a misnomer. It is actually square to the swing plane . Don't believe me ? Get a hula hoop and place it on your swing plane and and take your backswing slowly . Your "closed clubface " will be square to the hula hop swing plane

I discovered this technique by accident the other day at the range, and since then I have been watching videos fearing I was possibly delofting my club even tho my ball flight was very satisfactory. I just started golfing, last summer was my first summer playing and going to the range I am 46 years old. In trying to keep my club face square because I am tired of slicing I started doing exactly what you are showing in the video, turning the club in and then leaning the shaft making the face straight at set up. Then I just focus on keeping the club handle end pointed at the target and not released until after impact and HOLY COW my shots straightened right up. Do you recommend this same technique with long irons 1,3,5? I love this technique it actually makes being in the setup more comfortable for me and more confidence-inspiring in my mind I feel as tho I am going to connect solid doing this or at least I did the other day, man it was magic I could not hit it bad doing this...

Good stuff. I struggle with shaft lean. Been pretty successful with bowing my wrist and that alone has helped alot. I like the alignment rod drill, need to work that. I used to be a bad slicer but the bowed wrist has solved that, now when I miss hit, it's big to the left, straight but left as I think I "spin out". Seems this is the drill I need to work on. thanks Eric, great content.

This is so a critical thing to understand involving the takeaway and then swinging to compress the ball properly by maintains the lever idea thru the ball not flicking at it. Hey JZ! Could be either...or both.... Would need to see your swing on video to say for sure...I would do the path part FIRST and make sure that's neutral and not too far left. If your path is neutral and face is good then its shaft lean, ball position, aim etc to match that

@@CogornoGolf Yeah Eric, which I appreciate a lot. I started learning at home with your videos, Malaska's and Clements. You have been very helpful and in the end everything seems to make sense and connect. I take this trick from you, this approach from Malaska, etc, but the point is that now I'm not thinking (almost) and the shots start to be clean and sound nice. I am practicing inside the house, bouncing with plastic balls against the ceiling or the kitchen and feeling and checking the outcome (imagining, to be precise). But by recording myself I can see a huge improvement, nothing hurts anymore, the swing flows and I can't wait for this Covid to be over to go out there and practice. Maybe is the first case of learning like this hahah. I'm 42 by the way. Again, thanks for your videos!

2 things you don't mention here you probably should to remove confusion for people, 1. Put your hands forward at address and voila you will have square face with a closed shut down grip at address as you show 2. On the downswing you have to get forward and compress then reverse this coming over the top move aggressively with an open shoulders present open move or you will keep coming over the top and rip it left with a duck hook or something. The difficulty is timing the transition between the two stages of covering / compressing then presenting open and up. A 3rd one for the Driver is use the same compress swing but don't hit at the ball rather compress as though you're hitting a ball position before the actual ball and catch the ball on the upswing. And the concept of wood chop drill / promoting the ulnar/radial deviation movement over flexion and extension and over pronation is sort of a must to put this together.

My question is once you get past the drill of severely closing your club face then where do you go from there? Once you learn the shaft lean drill and then address the ball with a square club face as “normal”. Then implementing this drill would therefore open the club face as you leaned the shaft forward or moved the grip forward. Would a really strong grip mitigate that? Ultimately - you’re not going to address every shot with a 45 degree closed face so how do we still get straight shots with a square face at impact plus the shaft lean? Nevertheless it’s a phenomenal video and really eye opening. I’ve watched every video possible on shaft lean, ball compression, etc. It seems impossible for me not to flip my wrists at impact. So brutal.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 22 күн бұрын
Hey! Thank you!! Great questions Yes how to get back to normal you have some options: 1. Slowly hit balls (say 5-10) where on each you are slowing making less and less closed (but still not square). Say 45* then 35* then 25* 15* 5* etc 2. You can STRENGTHEN grip as option as u mentioned with square face at setup 3. Add pieces to CLOSE the face SOONER in the swing (takeaway, top or early downswing). Usually thats done with stronger wrist angles and LESS forearm rotation. SO you have to do something to close the face SOONER once you get back to square at setup to still retain those same feels

I have just recently been able to learn how to start hitting a right to left ball flight and have been reaching some pretty good success. How important is the forward shaft lean really? I have struggled with it for a while as it doesn't feel very natural at all for me. No matter how hard I try, when I look back at my swing video, I never seem to have any forward lean. I've watched so many videos about this and I've seen that even many pros on tour do not have a lot of forward lean at impact, if any. What would you say is the number one benefit of achieving this forward lean?

Hey Jason! "I've watched so many videos about this and I've seen that even many pros on tour do not have a lot of forward lean at impact, if any. So a square face at address with none or little shaft lean would result in a close club face with the added shaft lean at impact? So added shaft lean at impact compared to address closed the face? If you setup at address with shaft lean and a square face and return to that same position at impact doesn’t that solve the problem? And what about hybrids?
@CogornoGolf

Hey Mike! "So a square face at address with none or little shaft lean would result in a close club face with the added shaft lean at impact? " -No. I'm not sure if I'm just not understanding you correctly or you aren't saying it correctly. At setup lets assume the face is square. In swing with added supination and ulnar deviation the face is MORE CLOSED than at setup. So you need the shaft more forward at impact than address.

Great video! Question is, you're not actually addressing the club head with a closed face. It looks square. So it would appear that at impact, when you have hands forward, that the face would be open and the ball would go right. Instead, I've been closing the clubface at address, with strong grip, and then with my hands forward impact position, the ball goes pretty straight. Am I missing something? Thank you!!!!! Love your videos!!!

Most of us don’t have the wrist strength of Dustin. So a strong grip is the way to go. The stronger the grip the more compression you can make. For pitch and chip shots seems like a neutral grip is correct since we aren’t going for compression

@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jason! Just about every good player I have seen has the hands MORE forward at impact then setup....usually like 2-5" Starting with hands too far forward generally either opens the shoulders to get there OR gets the lead arm too far off torso (effects takeaway and backswing pieces) (which then effect downswing pieces)

My 7 irons swing speed is 105 mph. Average carry is 205. My attack angle is around -5. I literally hit it upwards of 150 ft in the air. I have shaft lean now but I feel like more is the only way to get my ball flying lower. When I lean it more forward I can launch it far lower but I cannot swing with any power as I cannot release the club. As soon as I let it release, why rockets. Help please. How to release it after impact while holding so much shaft lean?!

Unfortunately you are an anomaly. Less than 1% of golfers swing that fast and hit it than far. For you with that speed your 7 iron has no choice but to go in the clouds. There is literally no getting around that UNLESS you bring the speed down.

Hey Barry! Flattening/bowing your lead wrist already at setup would require your hands to be very far forward...and most times it's best to keep our setup pieces a bit more neutral to make things easier on us! Hands just inside the lead thigh at setup with a slight amount of extension/cup in the lead wrist (with a neutral to strong grip) is a great place to start. It does make for a great impact drill though!
