(The human’s new dog runs in) A: HUMAN! WHAT IS THIS PREDATOR DOING IN OUR HOUSE?! H: oh, that’s Max. I adopted him yesterday. And what do you mean “Predator”? A: front-facing eyes, sharp teeth, and high muscle strength meant for sprinting, ITS CLEARLY A CARNIVORE! H: oh, yeah I guess so. But don’t worry, he’s harmless. Max (jumps on Alien. Starts licking.) H: aww, he likes you. A: (confused screaming)
@riverstein7251
@riverstein7251 Ай бұрын
A: ITS TASTING MY FLESH H: yeah he likes you! A: I don’t wanna be liked I want to not be eaten! H: What? No no no, Max is _grooming_ you, as a sign of affection! Lots of animals on earth groom each other to form bonds. To us an animal licking us is akin to how we kiss our loved ones and dogs kind of picked up on that behavior through thousands of years of domestication by humans as animal companions. A: Wait, you lick each other to show affection?! H: Oh definitely not, that’s weird! We just press our lips to another person’s skin or lips, which accomplishes both a sense of closeness and taking in each other’s scent more deeply. Max just doesn’t have lips so he has to use his tongue to emulate the gesture. A: So he _IS_ tasting me?! H: Yeah, sorta, but not in the way you think A: So he’s not going to eat me? H: Nope A: He’s just showing affection? H: Yup A: And he never will eat me? H: Well… A: Human? This species is safe to be around right? They don’t *eat* people right? H: Well no. Mostly. See, when a domestic animal’s caretaker dies and there’s no one else around to feed them, and the body is just *there,* they may resort to some…unsavory drastic measures to avoid starvation. But they won’t kill people! Well..mostly. It depends on the dog and how well it’s been trained and socialized to not be feral. Not to mention whether or not it has rabies… A: *puts as much distance between them and Max as possible* H: But Max is a good boy so you don’t have to worry! A: I’ll be the judge of that

Fun Fact: The "10% of the brain" claim is based on a presentation about the study of Neuroscience. The original presentation was about our understanding of our brains and how at the time we knew "what 10% of our brain does." Like we knew that the frontal cortex was responsible for inhibitions, fears, and conformity. This was misinterpreted as "we know what the brain does but only 10% of it is on.". Additional fun fact: The reason we know so little about what the different parts of a brain does is because we learned what the parts do by what happens when humans lose those parts of the brain. For instance we know what the frontal cortex does because a man took a railway spike to the face and damaged his frontal cortex. He then lost all inhibitions, becoming increasingly blunt in conversation and frequently leaving his house half-dressed or nude. So we couldn't ethically carve out pieces of some dudes brain and then see how he acts which limited how well we can study what parts of the brain did.

Also, corpus callostomy is interesting in its pros and cons; it's one of the options for children with seizures and brain tumors. Leads to the condition of "split brain," which has some peculiar side effects after removing the section connecting the left and right hemispheres.
@AmunrA1991
@AmunrA1991 Ай бұрын
Also it's an old study on the human brain. Recent studies have show that we actually use actually use all of our brain just not all at once. Even when sleeping we use more than 10 percent. If we were to use only 10 percent of our brain then we would medically be considered brain dead as that would just about be the brain running the autonomous tasks just to keep itself alive.

Also note that the brain can be adaptable - so sometimes, especially when the person in question is young, they can loose a part of their brain (like the speech centre) and it gets redeveloped somwhere else ... Also the reason mental declining seemingly happens so fast - the brain keeps compensating for the loss of brain functionality until it is at a breaking point where it basically collapses and the symptomos start coming out and worsing rapidly.

See, my whole problem with this trope is that a species as risk-averse as these hypothetical aliens would never even ATTEMPT space travel. They would take one look at the radioactive death void outside of their planet's atmosphere and go "screw that, we're staying home."

Alien species that advanced via continuously replacing their body parts with cybernetics meets the humans who are incredibly against bodily augmentation that isn’t societally deemed medically necessary and even then they may push back against it. They become horrified once learning the process of augmentation not only begins when the alien species is still a “child” in earth terms but is also mandatory and called preventative medical care on their planet for the stuff that’s classified as mandatory, but it’s widely popular to elect for other body modifications purely for aesthetics. Meanwhile the LGBT community just vibes with them and trans people ask to be snuck onto their planet for free and way more advanced medical transitioning. The aliens agree because they find the human methods of surgery barbaric. Miscommunication and fear is mainly what fuels the Earth-wide horror at this alien species as humans don’t understand that the aliens’ methods are quick and painless enough to be done awake with nearly zero risks. They watched one alien surgery video and decided their methods were beyond barbaric because the patient was awake and appeared the make the human facial expression equivalent to a grimace. The aliens are at a loss at the violent and irrationally fearful apes they’ve come to know as humans and how to get through to them since body mods are so normalized that they don’t even think about it, they just do it.

Human: oh, those guys... so, uh, picture a human Alien: ok Human: now add more muscle and hair Alien: ok... Human: and then picture them living in smaller groups than you've seen humans living in, all the while being shorter than us too. Alien: ok... Human: and that's practically it. They were a essentially another intelligent species before going extinct. Alien: *sighs* let me guess, you humans wiped them out with your aggressive nature? Human: actually, there's been some evidence that they and humanity interbred with each other... becoming one species instead of two. Alien: how is that even possible if the two species were separate species plus the lack of technology to allow such hybrids to occur? Human: well, remember how I said Neanderthals were basically smaller and hairyer humans? Alien: yes Human: that's because humans and Neanderthals were very closely related to each other to be able to have children that were able to make more children of their own. Alien: fascinating... How are we, as a species, so stupid that it's been deemed necessary to label PEANUT BUTTER as containing PEANUT? How is it even CLOSE to OK that someone who'd be dumb enough to eat PEANUT BUTTER despite having life-threatening peanut allergy could end up fine but only if they're rich enough? @jmoneyjoshkinion4576 Ай бұрын
You would think it is a Warehouse 13 reference, but according to other comments it is almost certainly along rule 34 cursed stuff and the number is apparently supposed to be 17... either way I am not looking for it. I want to watch Warehouse 13 and Eureka again.

@SageofStars Ай бұрын
@@crowickedone4037 It's actually Shed 17, the comment in the video was wrong, and it's a...parody I think is the right term? It's a creepy reimagining of Thomas the Tank Engine, redoing them from cute trains with faces, into people who have been warped and twisted INTO trains via a process called Bio-Fusion. It can be quite creepy.

Oh the Thomas the Tank Engine one had me rolling. Yeah the writer and animator for Shed 17 needs a hug. Thomas fan fiction is either really well written that feels like part of the lore. Or you find yourself asking the writer who hurt you. There is no in between.

I just wanted to say, thanks for bringing this back. This series definitely was one of the things i listened to whenever I was down and depressed. It reminded me that humans despite having their misunderstandings and shenanigans, their strength and kindness is what truly makes them whole. Thank you for giving me hope and the strength to remember that being human means being vulnerable but also having endless possibilities for merely existing. It really is an uplifting series.

2:57 technically there is but it can be extremely dangerous, expensive, and downright horrible for years to go through depending on the severity of the allergy. That being to regularly consume or be exposed to said allergen in increasing doses over a long period of time, like some poisons. Hormesis basically, but you're expanding that sweet spot. But as I said in the beginning, Extremely Dangerous, Extremely Expensive, Extremely Damaging to Your Life for Years.
