Human : *pulling out a picture of them and their sibling playing in snow* Alien : I-I know you humans are crazy… but why would your parents not stop you from getting out during a nuclear winter ? Human : Nuclear winter ? Nah that was a regular winter ! Alien : What do you mean regular period of cold ? Human : Don’t you have winters ? Alien : No we don’t have natural period of cold ! Human : Well… we do ?! Alien : Is it because of the tectonic activity of your planet ? Human : Huh ? Alien : Sorry that was stupid, it would mean that difference in temperature occurs in a thousands of year timescale. Human : Oh ! You mean ice ages ! Alien : Ice ages ? Human : Yeah we have those, but winter is a yearly phenomenon. Alien : T-that makes more sense… wait no it doesn’t ! Why would you have a period of cold on a yearly basis ? Human : Because our planet has some axial tilt. And we also have period of heat that we name summer. Alien : What ? Why ? No… How did your planet get some axial tilt ? Human : Another planet crashed on Earth. Alien : AND IT DID NOT WIPE ALL LIFE ON YOUR PLANET ? Human : N-no… There wasn’t any life on earth at this stage. Alien : That’s… good… I though that your planet’s life had survived a mass extinction for a moment… Human : … Alien : … Human : … Alien : It didn’t ! IIRC, we're currently in the sixth mass extinction. Also whilst axial tilt is small part of it, the bigger part is that the earth's orbit around the sun is slightly elliptical. Also, our sun goes through hot and cold periods, so that also contributes to ice ages.

@@kiritotheabridgedgod4178 The elliptical orbit doesn't cause seasons at all. Summer on one side of the earth is winter on the other side, which wouldn't be the case if it were the elliptical orbit that caused it. In fact it has very little to do with elliptical orbit and EVERYTHING to do with the tilt, because it has everything to do with the surface area to light ratio of any particular point on the earth. If you shine a lamp on a ball, there's a big bright spot but there are spots on the edges where the light is dimmer; we usually think of this quirk of geometry as just affecting the day/night cycle, but it also affects the seasons. See, you have about the same energy output from the sun over any particular part of space. The more tilted away from the sun the land is, the more surface area that same amount of energy has to spread out over before impacting the ground. That means the same energy is spread out over more of the earth, which means less energy per square foot/meter, which means it's colder and the light is a bit dimmer and all the things we associate with winter or with far northern/southern climates. The axial tilt of the earth actually just evens things out enough that the equator and the polar regions are somewhat livable; if it wasn't there, Canada and Russia would be massive ice sheets and the equator would be nothing but a desert. The axial tilt brings the northern and southern areas away from the icy edges and into the brighter, more energy-rich zone for a while, while also wobbling the equator around so it doesn't sit still and become a burning band of death. The earth's elliptical orbit affects a few things, but the cycle of seasons isn't because of orbital geometry. It's because of global geometry, and I think that's pretty cool.

Geniuenly fun fact! Dust isn't skin cells! Not exclusively. This idea most likely came from a misinterpretation of a graph in a scientific paper. Most dust particles of the smallest variety are skin cells, but larger particles are mostly from fabrics, either cotton, wool or synthetic, and very fine sand/dirt.

"Species" as a classification is a lot more wibbly wobbly than most people think it is. Especially with closely related species. If we were to define animal species solely as animals that could interbreed with one another and make viable offspring, then dogs, wolves, coyotes, dingoes, and possibly a few others would all be considered one species.

@@dr.blockcraft6633 So technically, dogs are considered their own species, Canis familiaris. They originated from a specific subpopulation of Canis lupus, a kind of speciation that, when occurring without human intervention, is called peripatric speciation. When artificial selection is involved we just call it domestication. But the last common ancestor of modern dogs and modern grey wolves was still a grey wolf.

@tylermonroe4987

'Species' as a classification is a bit more rigid than you think it is. A species is defined not only by by the production of /viable/ offspring, in that they survive to adulthood, but the production of /fertile/ offspring, in that they can have children of their own. Horses and donkeys are different species, but they pruduce mules when they breed, the /reason/ they are different species is they mules cannot produce children due to having an odd number of chromosomes making them incompatiable with basically everything. Genetic mutation in mules that gives them an extra chromosome /does/ allow them to reproduce, but its basically 1 in a million, leading to the phrase 'when a mule foals' al a 'when pigs fly' as it is meant to be impossible

Yes, I believe this is a suitable position for me. Alright then, what is your current idea?" God: "Well, I'm pretty much done at this point." Alien: "Huh. Hey, what is that over there?" God: "Oh, that? Some plans for a creature the humans came up with in their games. A slime." Alien: "It appears to resemble one of the gelatinous filter-feeders from my home world. They are incredible pets." God: "Ooh, I like you. Angels, look at this guy, and learn from him." Alien: "I really did not mean to encroach." God: "Eh, it's fine. Now, tell me about those slimes." Alien: "Well, they're close to Earth's siphonophores in structure, being made up of dozens of smaller organisms that all work together as one unit." God: "I see." Angel: "Please, don't give him tips." Alien: "Sorry, boss' orders. Anyway, they filter impurities from the air in order to gain sustenance." God: "Ooh, interesting." Alien: "Agreed." Angel: "This is... surprisingly normal. Where's the catch?" Alien: "There is no _catch_ with them. They are simply docile creatures that filter pollutants from the atmosphere, produce offspring, and dissolve into a non-hazardous sludge upon death, which can be used as fertilizer." God: "Ok, done."

wait until the alien finds out that "pouring one for the homies" is basically a rebranded libation, which was the practice of pouring drinks for the gods, various spirits, or to the dead.

I mean Space doesn't work at all the way sci-fi space fights happen, sci-fi spaceship fights work as if they happened in an atmosphere. It just works that way in sci-fi because it's more fun. Realistic spacecraft fights would probably be hucking long distance missile javelins and/or doomsday lasers at each other

A: "Human, what is this 'God' I heard others speak of?" H: "So...man this is hard. Uhh, so did you guys ever develop any non-scientific beliefs about the world?" A: "...Clarify." H: "Like, when there are things you can't explain, like why things exist, or why things happen the way they do, so you develop a belief in something beyond the natural?" A: "Ah, the superstitions. Yes, we held superstitious beliefs in our history." H: "A god is a being that you can't prove the existence of but can't disprove the existence of, either. They have their own agenda and supernatural abilities which explain why things are the way they are." A: "Wait, 'a God'? The humans I heard referred to the God as a singular." H: "Well...not every human has the same beliefs when it comes to that stuff." A: A: "You have slaughtered each other over these differences, haven't you?" H: "Well, I wouldn't say 'have slaughtered'..." A: "You humans are so violent."

"Pouring one out for the homies" is a literally ancient tradition that the Romans called libation, but that dates back to at least ancient Sumeria, and might be much older. It's a tradition many thousands of years old. The meaning and intent has changed slightly depending on time and place, but ultimately it always means pretty much the same thing: If you were here (alive), I would have offered you a drink, but since you're now under the earth, I pour out a drink on the ground for you.

Perspective. Just switch perspectives between each ship. Imagine the dichotomy you could create by swapping between a bridge overcome with panic and chaos, and a bridge working at maximum efficiency, with everybody calmly performing to their best. Star Wars uses this a few times in the Original Trilogy, in fact! :D

Reminds me of Schlock Mercenary, where the artist pointed out that in an actual battle involving gravitational forces of this magnitude being thrown around, both ships would be invisible to the naked eye, but that would be incredibly boring to read in a webcomic.

There's a military science fiction series out there where the main character lets an enemy fleet advance after giving them a warning that they'll die if they continue...and when they do, darts their ship out ahead of them by about one (1) full lightmonth (the distance light travels in one Earthly month)...and then obliterates them with a weapon that has an overshoot range of approximately four (4) lightmonths. (Theirs Not To Reason Why is the name of the series.)

**raises hand** Sorry, Mr. Alien, sir, I'm one of the results of "loving blorbos too much." Hyperfixation and maladaptive daydreaming are still addicting and difficult to break out of, even after a couple decades... So I have collected an ever-growing pile of blorbos. ... I'm still unsure if the recent meds will kick in properly, for a couple more months. Things misfire in my brain, all too often...and so I have, in equal measure, fallen back too often onto self-manufactured "happy chemicals" via the blorbo pile... ...life in general has become its own WIP. I do not wish this fate on anyone.
