The Return Of Steam On The North Yorkshire Moors Railway !

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has finally reopened its doors to the public and the locomotives chosen to headline the return to steam, would be of class five power. Recently overhauled and longtime resident 5428 'Eric Treacy' is seen in action as the locomotive heads the railways internal services. There was another Black Five in attendance and was in the form of 44871 which is on loan from Riley Engineering, this was hauling full length trains from Whitby and the final class five loco would be 825, the railways Southern S15 Class.
The railway will be glad to be back in action after a long period of infrastructure work and training and a notable bit of hollywood filming has kept the line closed from their bread and butter operations !

I enjoyed the content big time. Great to see the NYMR opened & running again for the travelling public. Must have been well worth the early morning start after seeing the locos performed well as this. Richard

I remember standing by the wire fence watching S15's used for shunting at our local station and then being replaced with Q1s.

Very nice but those trains look empty. Is there still a lockdown or does social distancing make it difficult to add passengers to the trains.

Yes, social distancing is still in operation in the UK. I don't think that was the reason for the lack of numbers on board. I would imagine the as we get into the summer numbers should hopefully pick up.

Like Charles Emerson below, the first two trains (5428 then 44871) seemed empty, even if sometimes it's hard to see all passengers in a video. Yet some other heritage railways claim (as far as possible under current COVID regulations) they're "fully booked". Why were these NYMR trains seemingly devoid of passengers, given when I travelled on it within the last decade it was the UK's best patronised heritage railway?

Not sure Edmund, the trains were very quiet and your eyesight was spot on. The railway reopened a month later than its other counterparts and there wasn't really a huge promotional drive to welcome back passengers. The railway has just had the latest Mission Impossible film on the line with Tom cruise and they would of earn't some serious money,. I think they've got another filming contract at the start of June so will be closed again. It will be interesting to see the numbers in peak season, July, Aug and September.

BR black five 44871 and LMS 5428 "Eric Tracy" in steam. NYMR re opens, as lockdown restrictions are easing up, we must be careful.

Lockdown has played its part as well. Glad to see the preserved railways reopening to us one by one. However, the West Somerset and Llangollen Railways have yet to follow suit. My guess is that both will reopen in July. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
