Beer is one of Germany's most iconic institutions. From Oktoberfest to the more than dozens of beer halls across the country, the drink has earned the nickname "liquid bread". This time, I went to Munich and tried to find out how beer took over Germany.

Realized too many other things were called “off the menu” and wanted the channel to have a more personal name to give it some flexibility in the future

German beer is alive in the US you can get hefeweizens, bocks and dunkels all over the country. Sam adams is one major brand that has popularized bock beer. the future of German beer is international beer. While beer is downward trending in Germany, in the US it is as strong as ever. And the US is the cultural head of the west an arguably the world outside of the middle east and a few isolationist nations. Almost all major US brands were founded by german immigrants or people of german ancestry as well.

The sewage-drinking water stuff is mostly a myth. Cholera wasn't a thing in medieval Europe. Public fountains for drinkable water were a thing in the middle ages. You cannot make beer with dirty water either, so that is bullshit. It is more that beer is cleaner because you cook it. Also water gets stale fast and artificial cooling wasn't a thing either. It isn't because of sewage. You literally show two pictures of people drinking water. Abgekochtes Wasser "boiled water" and Quellwasser "spring water" being sold on the street. The history of the purity law is also a bit different. The thing is that it was a regulatory measure motivated by the Bavarians as well. Before that people made beers with all kinds of herbs and spices, after that only hops was allowed. And yes they also used hallucinogenic plants in beer, though it isn't like everyone was always drunk or high. The thing is hops is cultivated en masse in Bavaria, while it is not really profitable in the north of Germany, where at the time many larger breweries came from. So it was on the part of the Bavarians to even out the competition there. The big irony is that the Bavarians mostly drink wheat beer, which kinda defeats the price regulation and purity law both. As for the comparison to US craft beers. The US experienced a major die off of breweries due to the prohibition and never recovered afterwards. German beer in itself has had some break downs if you consider how prevalent Pils just is. Most other styles are regional, like how you find Gose mostly in two cities, but Pils is everywhere.

German beer is the best in the world. They should expand their global exporting and replace poor, big brand beers. I'd much rather drink most of the established German pilsners over Heineken, Bud etc.

Arguably its not the most influential beer country, Czechia, Belgium and the Netherlands have a lot to say as well. Modern beer is based in Germanic tradition and does not find its origin only in Germany but all Germanic, Nordic and even Slavic countries.

@@BananaRama1312 Traditionally people would put all kinds of shit in beer. The beer I am talking about is a Gose beer which as a style has roots going back to the early middle ages. Brewed withbrackish water there is a salt content, then herb and citrus are added for flavor and preservation. The German Reinheitsgebot actually makes exceptions for Gose beers so that they can be enjoyed in Germany as an iconic traditional beverage. 'Hopped' beer is hipster BS in comparison lol. To be fair I understand you are playing the part of a purist and wont agree that its a cool thing but I am a nerd and enjoy talking about this so eh..
