In 2005 Ronaldinho was on top of the footballing world with a Ballon d’Or in his hand. But that was his peak.
It wasn’t a smooth ascent, he didn’t make many friends along the way, and his descent was even bumpier.
From a teenage star playing for his boyhood club, via the glittery lights of Europe’s most cosmopolitan cities, to imprisonment and near bankruptcy.
This is the story of one of the most entertaining footballers of all time.
Written by Seb Stafford-Bloor, illustrated by Henry Cooke.

Ronaldinho's greatest achievement and lasting legacy? Making football look like fun. All those tricks and flicks, memorable goals, iconic celebrations and that million watt smile - he made a generation fall in love with the game. His personal vices would create a great What If of his career while the later distasteful episodes made him a figure of controversy. But his peak was the brightest of lights, attracting and indoctrinating countless fans into the Church of the Beautiful Game. That was Ronaldinho

This video really hits home. The only thing i feel that should be mentioned is that, when playing for Atletico Mineiro at age at age 33-34, he lead them to their first - and only, thus far - Libertadores title. Even out of his peak he managed to lead his team to continental greatness. And that is coming from someone who supports Atletico's local rivals, but Dinho was just too magical of a player not to have his achievements mentioned

Players like Ronaldinho is what modern football is lacking really. There are so few modern footballers who actually make football fun and make you want to go outside and kick a ball around right after seeing them play. The game has just gotten so bogged down in efficiency and competitiveness that it's lost a lot of the magic. There are still some players out there like it but they're sadly a dying breed.

I feel this fluctuates with era. The generation before the players in the video you talk about mentioned Brazilian Ronaldo as their idol. Before that it would probably have been Maradona, Romario or Platini, and In the same way, the generation coming up now will most likely say that Messi or Ronaldo were their inspiration (Mbappe already says so). Young footballers want to emulate the best in the game and that will never change

To the _"Barca big again"_ point: In the clip they also said _"...the first European Cup since 1992..."_ People tend to forget that the title in 1992 was Barca's first European Cup/Champions League win ever! So 2006 was only their second title overall. While Barca managed to win the UEFA-Cup and the Cup Winner's Cup. They were never a _"big club"_ when it comes to EC/UCL! Not under Cruyff, Maradona or Ronaldo. Yes, the s.c. _"Dream Team"_ won the cup in 1992, like stated before. But their real great times started in 2006. Barca got their blue sleeve badge, for five titles, pretty recently. In 2015 with Messi, Neymar and Suárez beating Juventus _(who lost their 4th final since 1996, with 2017 to come)._ Pretty long text...

Man, you guys really skiped Ronaldinhos Atletico Mineiro time ! One of the most magical moments in his career in my opinion, and I'm a Cruzeiro suporter ! Shame on you ! He didn't win anything for Flamengo, on Atletico he lead them to their first Libertadores title, with teamates, coach and suporters that understood and embraced him and it was probably the last time he played in a high level and took the sport seriously. Its a complicated topic, especially when people talk about players having fun and going out like its an acusation. Although in Ronaldinhos case, missing training was the real issue. If you show up to train, is fit, and perform on the pitch, what you do on your personal life is no one's business. There is also the problem of how people judge guys like him like he had an obligation to fulfill your expectations for what he could have been, he lived his life like he wanted, payed the price for his mistakes, and it matters only to him if he's at peace with that or not, or if he wanted more out of his career or not.

He goes on to finish second in the league with a crazy title race, next season win the libertadores and set the team up to win a domestic cup, both inaugural titles for the club.

Ronaldinho is easily the most skilful footballer I have ever seen. Wonderful dribbles and street football tricks aside, the man had a world-class first touch and an incredible eye for passing as well, while also possessing a knack for goals. He just made football look so, so easy. His short-lived prime was and still is one of the greatest I have ever witnessed as a football fan - when he was on fire, nobody came close.

I remember watching him play in Barca as a kid and every time he touched the ball I was glued to the screen to see what he would do next and he made me love the game even more. Oh man, this really hit home for me, especially given that I'm Brazilian. Every single detail mentioned in this video brought the fondest memories to my heart. We call him "o bruxo" (the witch, or the wizard), and if you remember him on the pitch, I don't have to explain why. People talk so much about "what else" he could have done if he were somehow different, but at the same time, a different man couldn't possibly have been Ronaldinho. As a famous band from his home city says in a song, "somos quem podemos ser, sonhos que podemos ter" (we are who we can be, the dreams we can have). He was just magical. A true wizard. Never to be forgotten.

Ronaldinho is synonymous with football in a lot of ways. I'm 22 so I'm juuuust young enough to not really remember his prime with Barça, but nevertheless he was still the idealized image of the "best player" in my kid brain: he was on the cover of all the games, I'd be trying to copy his playstyle on the playgrounds, his free kicks, etc.... his prime itself was short but in a weird way it didn't matter, because he left such a strong and long-lasting impression (a little like Maradona before him, I suppose). He was the last romantic football superstar, right before social media took off, and at the turning point of the game becoming sanitized, with teams that all play slight variations of the same boring, efficient style, and players being micromanaged by handlers that carefully curate their public images. Ultimately the reason he converted a generation of kids into football fanatics is because he seemed to play the game for the same reason a kid does: because it was fun. That has a beauty to it.

We had a similar childhood bro I’m 22 but as a kid Ronaldinho was a myth, playing fifa 08 with a prime Ronnie in Barca was an unmatched feeling. I can go on and on, but do yourself a favor and search Ronaldinho's Atletico's highlights...shades of Barcelona 05/06. His 2 years at Atletico Mineiro were magical. I'm proud to say that i could witness Ronaldinho played with the shirt of the team i love and man, there was games that the Barcelona flair showed up again. Like the videos says, in the big games he was possessed, search for his performace against Fluminense in 2012 and Figueirense, that is not a big club, but his father in law had just pass away, the fans pay homage to him as the players enter the field and something click it and at a performance it follow it. A iconic scene it was his scoring a amazing screamer from outside the box and falling in his knees praying and crying, then after the game going to the front of the stands and thanking the ultras.

well that's where your idea of "greatness" comes in. for example, kaka might have been a better player than ronaldo at any point of his career, but ronaldo's longevity might make him greater BECAUSE of his long term consistency. (just an example, kaka is not better than Ron) 2 players may be banging 40 goals per season, but you would rate the one doing it for many seasons higher.
