Locs have became a trend--because when people started growing out their natural hair they couldn’t take it anymore and started to loc it on a whim, I think that’s why people are combing them out they want to give their natural hair another chance, which doesn’t make sense to me, because if a person isn’t learning how to manage their hair the way it naturally grows--and learn patience--it’s going to be a never-ending pattern of starting locs, combing it out, growing out the fro, big chop, perm and so on. Our texture is here to stay, there’s nothing that will make it easier except understanding.

Yup. All of what you said. I was supposed to get locs 3yrs after my BC. But I realized in that waiting season I had to learn to appreciate my natural loose hair. It took me 10yrs to finally get to the point of locking it. I was going to do it year 9 but I waited and researched what size I wanted how I wanted to do it and to make sure it’s not just me doing it as a trend. From day 1 I knew it was the right thing to do. Even during the “ugly phase” aka frizzy shrinkage phase I still loved it. I honestly have to say I embraced that stage with my locs because I embraced that stage with my loose hair as well. Curly hair is frizzy and it shrinks. 🤷🏽‍♀️ It’s a should expected and the standard for curly hair. 😂😂😂

I've combed mine out before. I have them again, but I'll likely comb them out in a few more years also. No one defines what your hair symbolizes. The individual defines that. A lot of black folks use loc to manage their thick hair. They don't want to have short hair but their long hair requires so much time that it's almost impossible to accomodate. Some people do it to grow it out. Whatever you do, it's up to you. Enjoy it

I think ppl also expect their locs to be a certain texture too. The inspos that they look at are usually ppl with looser textures that loc’d up. So when they don’t get that look, they’re disappointed.

I honestly feel like some people in the comments are reading too deep into this. I combed out my locs three times before I finally settled on my fourth set which I love. but at the end of the day it’s literally just hair to some people just because it’s your spiritual journey doesn’t mean that it’s everybody’s and that’s OK. And at the end of the day, we all follow a trend of some sort why is hair any different?

I think ppls issue is that locs used to be a spiritual/cultural way of wearing hair THEN it became somewhat of a vain trend (this is just my theory as to why some may be rubbed the wrong way). Tribalism is very important to humans, and in a world that is increasingly accepting individuality and separateness, certain traditions and habits are dying off. (ex: for Afro descendant in the Americas, our natural hair and the ways we style it are the vestiges of various west/central african cultures our ancestors left for us which is why I believe some of us are so opinionated on topics surrounding Afro hair.) But at the end of the say, like the great India.Arie said "I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am the soul that lives within"

She hated getting her hair combed but now she wants more freedom . She wanted me to comb them out to retain her length but her hair was not having it . Hair grows back. I had a fade now i got a fro . I’m 6 months in but have been a loose natural for over half my life. It reached a time in my life where I feel like it represents who I am. I think it was a fad for allot of people. Just like when everyone wanted to go natural but wanted it to look like 3c curls when you may be nowhere near that texture. Fickle , disillusionment, and shallow are the words that come to mind .

Man i miss my locs so bad. I hate doing hair because it takes up so much of my time, i just want it to grow and settle, i hate combing. But my mom (Caribbean) HATED it. She said either i comb it out or it get cut out because she not going to raise a girl child with dreads. And of course, i screamed and fought to keep them. Still lost my babies :( I'm going to do it when i'm 18. I feel lucky to not have been exposed to the stigma surrounded my locs because i'm stubborn. I 15 now, 3 more years to go.

In my opinion, most people are just not confident enough to ignore the ignorance of the European mindset. The proof is the fact that many black woman feel their own hair is ugly; so they’re only happy wearing anyone else’s hair but their own. Most won’t go outside with their own hair braided, or without a gel texture style. Anyways, good vid.

I cut off my locs a week ago. I did miss admittedly miss the versatility of loose natural hair, but the main reason was they were becoming too long and so thick that unless I sat under a dryer for 2 hours after washing they’d grow mildew on the inside 🤢 now I’ll just wear my hair in twists. I can see myself going back to locs but I’ll definitely make them thinner next time around.
@keepingitkim6056

But what a lot of people fail to realize is that locs are more than a cute hairstyle and an aesthetic. It represents letting go of how you look and embracing you natural state. It seems like a lot of people didn’t do any research on locs. It’s more than just a cute effortless style, it’s about your spirit At least that is how I see it anyway

I think there are 2 schools of thought in the loc community, 1) locs are a style and 2) locs are a texture. Because people can change thier hair texture as they please, from 1A to 4C and vice versa, texture has become seen as a style in modern times. So it becomes a trend for some. For others who see texture as a state of being and consider a ponytail a style they may not care as much to transform thier look as often. Its fun for some and a pain for others.

I'm seeing this a month after it was posted. I'm a year into my loc journey, so it's interesting that people are combing it out like this lol Personally, if I ever wanted to get rid of my locs or restart them, I would just grow out the roots and then chop or shave my head (I'm comfortable with having short hair). Combing them out seems like a lot of work and I agree that many people wear locs to have the style and then comb them out after they have grown. I've seen other hair KZfaqrs wear locs as a temporary style while they grow their hair. It's interesting because I don't see locs as a "protective style" it's just my hair lol

I think loc is not for everyone I have Sisterlocks is beautiful and I will never comb it out also not every hair is good for Locs depends on the texture of the hair too do what works for your hair type and you won’t regret it

I don’t know ANY men who are combing out their locs. You took them out to put hella grease in your hair to make it look curly ? I don’t get it .

People need to do more research. You took them out because they were frizzy, REALLY? And because people made comments about your hair and because they didn't look fully locked. This video makes no sense to me 🤣 Also locs is not a style. OMG

Alot of this is rooted in internalized anti blackness. People got locs for the wrong manicured reasons where you only like how they look when they’re “neat” geled and somewhat compatible with a standard of straight hair. Yall comb them out bc you never did the self live work it takes to genuinely love and accept your hair in the texture it grows out your head while living in a society hellbent on reinforcing that it isn’t beautiful.

I'm fine with people combing out their locks cuz I'm tired of seeing them. I started mine two and a half years ago And even though I was late to the game I see even more and I hate to say it but the people that I see them on 'give off' a less than positive vibe. I have never ever won extensions I have never ever worn braids I have never ever won a wig so for me locks are absolutely perfect for my 4C hard to manage hair. I feel like I take even better care and attention to my locks than I did my natural hair. I went through all the stages and I'm just fine with it. So all you little fickle kids comb your locks out so I don't look like you and you don't look like me and there's no confusion.
