A look at the new SH-4d synthesizer from Roland.
The SH-4d is a multi-timbral synthesizer with four parts, plus drums.
At the time of uploading, there are 11 different synthesis engines onboard, as well as a multi-track sequencer, arpeggiator, MIDI and USB audio.
The unit also includes lots of FX, a deep mod matrix and "D-Motion" which allows configurable modulation that is controlled by physically tilting the unit in different directions.

This is what I love about videos by mr. Ball - Not too much deep dive into specs, but rather showing what can be done with a piece of kit. In regards to the Roland SH-4D I have to say that as I watched this video I started guessing at a price. From my impressions of modern day Roland I figured that since this is a more "normal sized" machine, all the different engines built into and so forth it had to be priced at somewhere north of €1000. I was all primed and ready to go on a rant about how Roland should learn from mr. Amstrad, Alan Sugar, and offer a feature packed machine for a good price. Imagine my surprise when I googled this little beauty and found Gearnews mentioning that Thomann would ask €599 for the SH-4D! That is a great price for all the included stuff here: I think that this might be a top-seller for Roland. I for sure am considering a purchase!
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic Жыл бұрын
Cheers. Yes, I think the KZfaq crowd have different complimentary approaches and mine has become the quickfire, 10 minute summary. Price - yep, fairly priced for what it does. I think it will do well.
@justjoeblow420
@justjoeblow420 Жыл бұрын
Price didn't surprise me, I was briefly considering snagging one to have a more hands on sound design machine to compliment my MC-707 and compared to the normal Zen Core experience the engine is intentionally cut way down in what it can do but that's also what allows it to be so hands on. I'm still kind of considering one just for a more hands on synth though it would inherently sonically have a huge amount of overlap with what a MC-707 can do just on it's own with the right patch programming.
@needfortweed8734
@needfortweed8734 Жыл бұрын
@@justjoeblow420 yeah, the only Roland thing I currently own is a VP-550, so I think I'd be good on that front. I have a few drum machines or mainly drum machines, but not an actual "heart of performance" type of kit if you know what I mean...

This is definitely on my radar. I wish it had a few slight changes though. 1. Instead of the Pitch buttons I wish it had a small joystick so it could also enable a mod wheel instead of having to use D-motion (demoted to motion, more like) 2. The ability to import your own wavetables 3. An additional USB port that enabled the use of an external D-motion sensor so the unit could be on a desk and not moved to enable D-motion use. The other quirks, such as how you have to save etc. are something to get used to if not fixed in firmware.

@@AlexBallMusic also I want to say how much negative attention this is getting, people just do not get how hard it is to get the same sort of movement with the MC707. They're different beats, the MC707 is imo more of a workstation, with 3 assignable knobs per part. That is woeful, sure you can do motion sequencing, but you're stuck with this very static set, 8 parts and you're more just djing your set. The SH-arah is more hands on and immediate, I can see how quickly you managed to do what you did, how it sounds, for a 4 part synth and 1 drum, it sounds like a finished synthwave song. This is almost a definitive 80s synth that everyone should be looking into, if that's their genre of music. I just packed all my synths away in boxes yesterday, I just don't have the room and am in no hurry to create with them. The SH-arah just happens to land at my feet and I am like, wow, this is a great 80s throwback, imagine if you had 2? People be like, it sounds plastic, it sounds digital, I'm like, you haven't used one, how would you know? This with a Wavestate would make a nice combo, and i have a WS packed away lol.
