*Do you agree with your country's safety ranking?* Important to point out that I *don't* agree with some of this ranking; It seems to me that they should have two separate indexes that depict the behavior of a nation or its regime / government towards global security (militarization etc) and another one that depicts the internal safety of its own citizens. Mixing up the two does not offer the most accurate view of either!

As an US citizen who has lived abroad, yes this seems pretty accurate to me. Only Americans who have spent their whole lives in the US think the US is safe.

I can vouch for Portugal. Lived there for two years and felt safe everywhere at every time of day. Now I live in California and it's like being back home in Brazil

I've lived in 2 areas labelled ghettos in Copenhagen, Denmark. In that period of time i walked home shit drunk A LOT. Never experienced anything uncomfortable or dangerous. Indexes don't include this stuff, but yeah, to me Denmark feels pretty safe. Just don't step into the bicycle lane. Then it's pretty unsafe

As an American who's traveled across much of Europe, this ranking definitely makes sense. I remember being on a tour in Switzerland which ended at lake Zurich. There was a lot of American backpackers with us, and they wanted to explore the city, or swim in the lake. Our tour guide was very insistent that they could just leave all their stuff on the shore, and promised no one would take their stuff. That seemed to be a difficult concept for some of them to understand. But she ended up being right.

As an American, these stats have been quite humbling. Here in the US, a lot of Americans see Brazil as a corrupt, crime ridden country (even if they don't admit it) and this is a stereotype that extends to most of South America. But the US is a mere 1 rank above Brazil, and there are a number of South American countries above the US, like Uruguay. It pays to learn about the outside world!

As an American living in Tokyo, I think my only source of surprise is how LOW on the list Japan is -- #10! Hard to believe there are nine countries deemed safer than this one, but I guess anywhere in that top part of the list is going to have a pretty similar vibe. Either way, the contrast between Japan and the U.S. is STARK. Even in so-called safe parts of the U.S., I still always found myself side-eyeing strangers, keeping a tight grip on my belongings at all times, and -- sadly -- always making sure I knew the quickest escape route in case a mass shooting were to break out. Those types of thoughts simply DO NOT go through my mind living in Japan. Any time of the day or night, in any part of the city or country, I feel 100% at ease walking by myself without a care in the world. It's an amazing feeling that I wish more people in the world could know.

In Japan, a woman can walk around in the middle of the night and nothing will happen. An elementary school student can ride a train at midnight. Even in the most unsafe places in Japan, you will probably only be accosted by drunks. And dropped wallets are usually returned.

In the ongoing conflicts category there are several countries tied for first place. The counties with the same rank are simply listed in alphabetical order.

I actually learned that Iceland is so safe, police officers don’t even carry weapons like guns or tasers. People can even abandon infants in strollers for minutes at a time & not have to worry about kidnapping.

I feel like access to health care need to be a bigger factor in these rankings. I live in the US, and not having access to universal health care is a big reason why I don't always feel safe here.

For me as a Finn it's a bit shocking to realize that one of the deepest gap in safety is between Finland and Russia.

South Africa should get the red, to be completely honest.

The militarisation stat is a bit unfair. The only reason New Zealand isn't militarised is because there are larger military powers in the region that will defend New Zealand at all costs (Australia and USA), who lose points because of this while New Zealand doesn't. Same goes with the larger powers in Europe.

It's interesting how the index calculates what's peaceful. For example, they take into consideration "Access to weapons", "Weapons export", "Nuclear and heavy weapons", "military expenditure". So a country like the USA is getting red in all these areas because, for example, the constitution guarantees rights to bear arms, red on weapons export and military expenditure because of NATO and allies, red on nuclear of course.

Ireland may be peaceful and stable, but living here is a struggle. It is impossible to rent or buy a house without huge amounts of money and there are currently over 11k people homeless. Hospitals are overcrowded and 1 in 4 people are on a waiting list. You need to be rich in Ireland or you won't get far

As a Brazilian who just came back from Japan (after 12 years), I am really glad to see Japan on the list, even though I think it deserves a little bit more than #10! I have so many stories to share: one day, I totally forgot my wallet with money, IDs and cards inside my bike's basket on the street. One day later, I went outside and there my wallet was, at the same place with all my stuff. Dude, if it was here in Brazil, someone would have take the whole bike together... 😵‍💫 The same way, eveytime I found a wallet or iPhone on the streets, I returned it to the Police station. And I love this respect and consideration Japanese society has. I love being part of that. Yesterday I fianlly met our Portuguese neighbor (here in Brazil), and we were talking, at night, here on the street, outside our houses. I was so afraid that I had to check EVERY damn person (walking or on a motorbike, etc) who was passing us by (we always think someone will robber you...). The Portuguese guy said to me: "I can see you are very nervous just being here outside at night. You will never experience this feeling when you go to Portugal. Trust me!". Here I am, back from Japan, just "enjoying" my free time with my brazilian family, but ready to leave Brazil and go to study in Portugal. And I am glad (and makes me feel relieved) to see on this list that Portugal is one of the safest countries in Europe. I hope I have a peaceful time there. Isn’t it amazing how most of the top 10 safest countries are the countries with relatively high tax rates and large governments? It’s almost as if paying for public services works! (Provided the taxes don’t end up with a corrupt government)

As an American I totally understand the US's relatively low rating for a developed country. Gun violence is our #1 red flag. Drug overdose another. I am an advocate for US adopting the Portuguese drug policy.

In Central America; the areas I felt the unsafest were in order: 1. El Salvador 2. The Mexican / Guatemalan border on the Guatemalan side. 3. Nicaragua I felt the safest in Costa Rica which is ironic because Costa Rica has no military. The most dangerous part of Costa Rica are white criminals from US, Canada and Europe posing as tourists and setting up bases for criminal enterprises (ie: drugs, animal smuggling, hacking, money laundering, identity theft, etc.) That is a big problem in Costa Rica.

Little surprised we (Canada) fell out of the top 10. But as you suggested the difference between 2 and 15 is little more than a rounding error. I am vacationing in Portugal next month, I know it is an EU country, but was surprised it ranked higher than we did.

As a South African, I'm surprised that the US is less safe than South Africa. I feel like that's a mistake, at least in the US there is an actual police presence. In South Africa, our police are lazy and are easily bribed to not do their jobs. The amount of Farm murders in South Africa is also an issue, many of these don't even get investigated. There is also a huge issue with Gender Base Violence (GBV) in South Africa, making it very unsafe to be a woman in South Africa. South Africa is currently having a Electricity Crisis and they switch off the electricity for 8 to 12 hours, that is also making crime rise with more break ins, and thefts.

Anybody noticed that for *ongoing conflict* several contries have the same score, but they are just ranked alphabetically? What is the meaning of the top 5 in this case?

In would be interesting to see how some of these stats change for certain demographics. Some of these countries may be considered safe overall, but unsafe for say women or LGBTQ+ people or people of a certain age or ethnicity or income level.

Singapore is one of the safest place on Earth but it wasn't always like that. Gangs, drugs, unemployment, poverty and a lack of housing used to be common here but our Supreme Leader the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew managed to turn things around and here we are now. Lee was so respected that the opposition leader refused to run against him. Lee never lost a single election from 1959 to 1990 (31 years). He could have ruled for life but he stepped down as PM in 1990. His son Lee Jr is the current PM of Singapore.

Glad to see Ireland in the top 3. It's a nice safe place, super attractive to US students (more particularly their parents who factor in the safety side of things for their kids heading overseas to study).

You know, instead of explaining it, maybe ask questions about it. Norway way down on the list? Even after Hungary and Malaysia? Norway is one of the safest countries in the world, without the use of an oppressive police force, without close to a fascistic government. A true democracy with very little violence. A country where most people trust each other, without even knowing each other. A country where you can leave your kid in the stroller and have a coffee and a bite to eat, while the baby sleeps outside, unguarded. Christ almighty, I'm totally lost.

I am a native born and raised American. I live abroad as an expat. I carried a weapon in the military and would legally carry a weapon again if I ever decided to live in the USA again. I feel no need to own or carry a firearm where I now live and have no plans on returning to the USA to live. I definitely disagree about the Philippines. I have spend time all over Asia and feel that, Korea and China non-withstanding, the PI is very unsafe.

Your title is not correct. The ranking is not about the safest, but the most peaceful. The level of military expanditure and the possession of nuclear weapons have no impact on the safety inside a country.

Ireland is generally safe but I wouldn’t recommend Temple Bar on a Saturday evening.

The methodology employed by unesco for this index is laughable. Ignoring the ridiculous connotation that ‘peace’ is equivalent to domestic safety, the system has 7 categories that are measures of a nations ability to provide and maintain peace, domestic and foreign, which it classifies as negative 🤦‍♂️. All this index does is further entrench national biases and make ill witted suppositions on the back of data manipulation.

Am surprised by my country South Africa considering we've deteriorating these past two years. We are safer than the US? Am truly shocked

Not sure about China and Indonesia ones... am Indonesian who studied in China for a year, I feel much safer in China than in Indonesia because the police there act faster, there's much more visible public order, cctvs in public etc. I often went for street food and going to parks, malls, ride on their bus, train etc and only ever heard of one theft, and another of a creep going into girl's dorm (that was apprehended quickly), also, I felt safe going by myself for a midnight quick run to the minimart, and so many of those who worked alone at night shift I met were women. Although I've heard of other crimes in there such as kidnapping of children, fake food (which is actually too exaggerated by the media), and of course the strict zero covid policy, gangs, or totalitarian government policy (which I think is too exaggerated also), but other than that, China should probably be included in the 'green' zone just like Indonesia.

A lot of weirdos on here say that Canada is some kind of dystopian dictatorship. It really isn’t bad, I do believe we should be ranked slightly lower than displayed because we aren’t on par with some of those European countries, but we’re still very safe, especially compared to our neighbours.

I noticed Australia, for example, gets a 5 (bad) score for having and buying heavy weapons. How does that make Australians unsafe? USA gets a 5 for military spending, that doesn't make its citizens unsafe because the weapons aren't used on its citizens. I think the rankings need to be adjusted to better show actual citizen safety.

Ukraine is probably counted in Russia and Eurasia (seeing as it lies between Russia and Moldova), that would explain why it didn't influence Europe that much. Also French Guiana is likely green because it is just the colour of France (they dont tend to analyse French Guiana separate from France)

The murder rate in The USA is a little over 7 times that in the UK. The death rate from road traffic accidents is over 5 times as high. The death rate by shooting is well over 100 times as high. People will respond "but you have lots of stabbings instead." It is true that the death rate from stabbing is higher than in the US, but only by 20% and is already included in the overall murder rate. And the majority of UK deaths by shooting are suicide. So we have far fewer guns, safer cars and better drivers.

This report is not about safety, it measures peacefulness, whatever that is. While I'm sure that there is strong correlation between the ranking in the report and safety, safety is not what the report measures.

I think America’s ranking is fair overall, but shouldn't be penalized for protecting the nations that are in the green.

This index is a good first orientation when it comes to travelling and international business. However, it needs to be mentioned that not every person has the same level of safety in each country: Gender, skin colour/ethnicity, political views online, religion and wealth also play a role in the person's experience. E.g.: I would argue that being LGBTQ in Saudi Arabia makes the experience significantly less safe than being in Turkey because although he letter has an overall lower safety score, Saudia Arabia has much harsher laws as well as a religious police which results in imprisonment, torture and execution of LGBTQ people while in Turkey, people may face social rejection but certainly not any legal consequences for simply existing. Another case would be visiting China as a person with dark brown skin: Whereas in Somalia, that wouldn't be an issue at all, there are Chinese restaurants, cafés and other business which have a sign outside their door stating that people of a certain ethnicity are not welcome - most commonly: black people, Indians and Japanese.

If you have about 20 parameters, you can arrange the final list of countries, and re-generate the value of each parameter, try it, easy.

Iceland is currently ranking number 1 most saftest country in the world based on Global Peace Index ranking from 2020 to 2023. This country is a prime example for many countries to stay peaceful for a long time.
