A poor 18th century English coastal farming community survives the King's ruinous taxes thanks to a smuggling ring created by its masked leader called the Scarecrow. The ring's success leads King George to order the Royal Army's General Pugh to capture and execute the ringleaders. It is a battle both of wits and action that the Scarecrow must win to save not only his own life but those of the men he leads while keeping the vital smuggling operation running. The miniseries version was originally shown on the Disney anthology television series and shown again, unedited, in the 1990's on the Disney Channel.
I do not own the writes they belong to Walt Disney himself and his company.

Every kid in the mid-1960's loved this movie. Something about the atmosphere, the scarecrow's frightening mask, the galloping horses made it unforgettable.

One of the very best Disney live action films ever made! I loved it when I saw it many years ago and I still love it now. It stands up very well even today. The acting is excellent, the scenes are effective, it has great music and the story is wonderful. And a great hero! He was one of the very earliest "superheroes". The story makes sense and hangs together well, which is more than I can say for a lot of modern movies. Not only was it a good, exciting story, but it also stuck in a bit of real history: showing that while the Americans were definitely abused by the English Crown, the English poor were treated even worse. What I liked was that the history part of it was used very effectively, as part of the story, not in a preachy manner or in a way that slowed down the flow of the story. And that theme song has stuck in my head for decades! I would recommend it to anyone and I applaud it being put here on KZfaq where it can be seen.

Great analysis! Love this movie! I grew up watching it and yes that them song has stuck in my head for decades! Such a unique movie with great acting snd storyline, which are lacking these days. Sadly its a very hard to find movie. We had to put in a special request with Disney just to get a copy. Glad to see it here on KZfaq for free now!

I used to emulate this show outside, the song, I could only remember the words "Scarecrow, scarecrow!" I just remember thinking it was such a cool show. We spent so much time outside as children in the early to mid-60's. All of the 60's as a matter of fact. We were skinny as rails. Very little time inside cause there were no video games. A better world.

Best thing Disney ever did. That includes every feature length film animated or acted. Patrick McGoohan must surely be the most underrated actor ever to appear on screen. First this tour de force as the kings arch nemesis the Scarecrow. Later his incomparable performance as the British King Longshanks in Braveheart. McGoohan should have won the Oscar in a walk for the latter. His Scarecrow rendering is at least worthy of a nomination. His only weakness as an actor was that he didn't appear in more films. That was a grievous oversight by every casting director in Hollywood. What an actor.

Part of it may have been his devout Roman Catholicism. When considered for the role of James Bond, he turned it down, not wanting to be associated with a character who was such a womanizer. During his run as John Drake in "Danger Man", his character was never involved with any illicit romance.

@thomasthomas2418 Great insight into the marvelous talent and character of Patrick McGoohan. I had no idea he was offered the role of James Bond. Only to turn it down!! What a look and style he possessed to dominate that character. In my opinion, he had a more natural persona than any actor who ever played the role. EAT YOUR HEART OUT SEAN CONNERY!! His morality and selflessness only make him that much more admirable as a man. McGoohan had the talent and unaffected polish to rival any actor to ever appear on screen. Clearly, he had a more noble agenda than selfish personal glory.

Patrick MchGoohan packs a punch in unexpected, but charming ways. Expressive, explosive, and courteous in his actions and personality. His role in the cult classic “The Prisoner” is phenomenal as is every other performance he’s done.
@donaldschmidt2990
@donaldschmidt2990 Ай бұрын
@exempligratia101 I believe a somewhat similar acting style to Mc Goohan is that of the current top tier British actor Benedict Cumberbatch. His performance as Khan in the remake of the famed Star Trek character was satanic!! It actually buries the original rendering by Ricardo Montalban. I understand he has portrayed Sherlock Holmes on screen, as well as his role as Marvel's Doctor Strange. Overall, though, McGoohan had more of an innate charm and greater depth than Cumberbatch. I personally would have loved to see him perform Shakespeare. What a voice and gracious dignity. And a master class in class, off camera as well.

Why do we loose such intense joy as children. I remember sprawling out on my aunt’s warmed tile floor ( she had the old fashioned hot water pipes in the floor) in her living room excited to watch her new color tv ( 1964 one of the first) to watch the Disney channel on Sunday evening. Each stage of life has its challenges and joys. Why we loose the pure joy of living we experienced as children is beyond me. But we do! Prayer helps. God wants us to have joy, which I do at times, just not at the same level of that child of 6 excitingly waiting for the Disney channel!

I didn't see this when it was first aired but I love it! I live on the Kent coast, close to beaches that still have smugglers caves & tunnels in the chalk cliffs, so researched a lot of the history of smuggling in the UK. The majority of it occurred in Kent & Sussex & the first smuggling took place in the 13th century, when wool was smuggled from Romney Marsh to Europe, avoiding paying tax at ports on the South coast. The Scarecrow appears to give a very accurate portrayal of the constant battles between excise men & entire towns & villages involved in the trade, battles that lasted until the early 19th century!

The only slight error is Dr Syn's reference to, "St Margaret's Bay, this side of Dover". As St Margarets Bay is the other side of Dover from Dymchurch, I wonder if they meant St Mary's Bay, which is just a couple of miles from Dymchurch? Excellent film nonetheless!

Watch scarecrow back in the 60s on wonderful world of Disney. Great shows Daniel Boone and Zorro and many more that was about the time Roseti"s water ice or Mr Softer would come around. The water ice man nothing like a water ice and Soft pretzel. And Mr Softer was the best we didn't get them every week. My father was a very hard worker and that was a treat for us. Great times and Great parents.

Patrick McGoohan said the two Disney films he made (this and The Many Lives of Thomasina), as well as the John Drake series (Danger Man, Secret Agent) were his favorites. He can look and sound so urbane, it seems an incongruous remark, but he was actually quite a gentle person. He turned down a James Bond role offer because he didn't like casual sex in movies. Wonderful actor, with a sense of humor seen in his eyes even in serious roles. BY THE WAY Scarecrow of Romney Marsh is now included on DVD in the "Disney Treasures" DVD collection.

Loved it so much as a kid that it inspired me to buy the Thorndyke Buchannan book it was based on and then the entire original 7 book series by Thorndyke. Just bought the novelization of the Disney series. One of my great disappointments of Disney Plus. They promised to open the vault but haven't.

They must have known those navy guys were coming. Probably heard the kid with a drum. Scattered quicker than tumbleweeds in a tornado. Even that Vicar couldn’t stop ‘em. That lady didn’t like that guy’s advances and was pretty handy with a cleaver. That scarecrow dude sure had a cool laugh. Navy guy’s figured him for a devil because he could disappear like a ghost.

First of all, this is just one of those things of my long gone youth that I always remember. That song, the mask, the ride across the beach, the laugh, coolness of Vicar, boy about my age at time (I was younger actually) to identify with, that voice. Put together so well for a nine-year old! Since then, I became a history bug over the last 50 years and I always wondered about the accuracy of the plot line here; that is, were there people in England who were so angry at the king that they were in a sort of rebellion? I'm sure taxes were high in England at that time due to ongoing wars in Europe (and brewing problems in America) but uprisings in England were pretty rare. Remember the retort in the American colonies when patriots would challenge Tories as being satisfied with "slavery:" "Better a slave to England than a free man anywhere else in the world." Pretty strong stuff. Just wondering.

If anything I think it was like m y t h, legend, and lore like Davy Crockett, Zorro, and Swamp Fox dressed up a little more heroically by Walt Disney. There's an old Maxim that goes when confronted by facts and Legend-- print the legend.

I wonder how it went over in UK back then or now? Now as bad, but reminds a bit of the uproar surrounding the Mel Gibson flick "Patriot" when they included the outrageous church burning, complete with congregants, when there wasn't a shred of evidence that the British officer being referred to there (LTC [and future parliamentarian] Banastre Tarleton) had burned people alive during his admittedly harsh campaign in S.C.

Yes . There was discontent but not rebellion in the air at the time. Smuggling / Contraband etc was widespread . We were at War with the French most of the time - and still are !! It didn't help when you traitorous , ungrateful subjects of the King decided you wanted to be free . ! A great mistake I think? We're slowly getting over it..😁

When this aired in 1964 the show was called "The Magical World of Disney". I believe the original episodes ran longer than what has been posted here so I presume this is an edited version. The UK theatrical release (1963) was even shorter having been edited down to 98 min.

I always thought the English people love King George. But they were tax just like us Americans. So we were all not liking the King of England. And we all wanted our freedom. And Zorro and the scrow fought for the same thing freedom and fair tax's. And I also love watching Disney movies.❤❤❤❤
