I think Luke's point about Autistic symptoms and OCD symptoms overlapping a lot is really accurate, I've thought that myself about the two.

heyy yeah same. i have ocd and autism and ive wondered about this for very long and came to the conclusion that: if u are being threatened by anxiety due to some sort of thought aka an obsession which puts a gun to ur head and says 'recount how many of plastic beads u still have bc what if ur cat has eaten one and is choking and dying' aka compulsion then its ocd. any other reason for repetitive behaviour other than the threat of anxiety is not ocd. i have autistic rituals (which sounds.. interesting) like i tap some surfaces before engaging with them e.g. i tap flat surface things like laptops, boards etc when i wanna pick them up just cuz it feels right. if i dont do it, i wont panic abt it slipping and killing my newborn cousin or sm,, i just end up being uncomfortable and idk like a hard boiled egg lmfao. it feels way more sensory than cognitive. with ocd, its all abt the anxiety and thoughts attached to it, with autism its sensations and certain minor types of synesthesia u get from autism. for instance, if i dont do an autistic repetitive behaviour like touch textured surfaces with both hands for an even amount of time, then i just feel like someone is breathing down my neck or just an immediate gross sensory feeling. with ocd, if i had this compulsion, it would require it being to stop a stream of anxiety inducing worries and doubts. another reason for autistic ppl having rituals is constancy and feeling like nothing is changing so it feels safe. i have things spaced out in my room in not the most intuitive way, but i will not change it for now bc it just feels like my room and my room is safe. if u get attached to the way things are, u can potentially avoid them changing and/or actively fight against it changing sort of like ocd sufferers do. lets have another quick example for this - mark and melissa have the same ritual. mark has ocd, melissa is autistic and they both make sure that their lucky charm is always with them. mark has assigned comfort and safety on the lucky charm and whenever he finds it in his chest pocket, he feels calmer, more focused and can be calmed down from meltdowns/sensory overload easier. its important that its there for him as its his constant. melissa is deathly afraid of accidentally going back in time as her ocd obsession (true story, i have this obsession! corry was right when he said it can be ANYTHING) and reminds herself every time she fishes out her lucky charm that theres no way she can be back to her 15 year old self decades ago because she only got this lucky charm 2 years ago. she checks on it to remind her panicky brain that shes not stuck in the past and shouldnt worry about time loops and paradoxes. hope that helps people! and please tell me what you think.

my old psychologist called that exposure therapy "urge surfing". imagine having an itch on your arm and being told not to scratch it. it gets itchier and itchier by the second and you know scratching it will make it go away but you're not allowed to. that's what it's like trying to control the compulsions. and they come along more when you are forced to sit and think about not doing them. it's torture but did help somewhat in the long run. i should definitely go back to therapy eek

This was very useful. Ive been diagnosed w general anxiety, panic disorder, ptsd, and ocd. Ive dealt w anxiety and ocd for like as long as i can remember. But post trauma all my symptoms intensified, so on top of trauma flashback, everything else got much more troubling. I stopped being able to work, had to move back home out of state back to my mom and i start a new therapist on the 7th. Im super anxious about it but we're doing a phone call appt until i can see if i can feel okay enough to see her in person. It's taken such a huge toll on my life. I stopped seeing friends, stopped doing things i love and enjoy, stopped doing anything w family out of fear. It can take over at any time, and also no one can touch me nor can i touch anything outside of my room which has been clean and sanitized. Really hoping this therapist is good for me. Ive been through so many different therapists and medications. If anyone reads this please just wish me luck.

57:34 I am so obsessed with what he's talking about! I remember when I was in onthology class and we were talking about how we construct objetctivity, which we do by comparing the subjective (individual) experiences. When one of those experiences differs from the objectivity that has been constructed by a group of individuals, it gets pathologized and excluded. Foucault talks a lot about this too!

I grew up going to small festivals but I think the first gig I chose to go to was an Emma Blackery:) Also I have OCD and it's interesting how it changes and adapts with my age and who I am around. Like with my bf it's like he is immune to my compulsions. At the time of my diagnosis I had a lot of obsessions around textures (just right ocd) and so my therapist was interested in also giving me an autism diagnosis which is interesting as another link to it not necessarily being an anxiety disorder but rather a result of neurodivergency (tho ofc that is not a mental health illness). If you are interested in what it's like to live with OCD I would recommend Am I Normal Yet? By Holly Bourne, it is a YA novel but it perfectly describes the feelings (at least that I experience) of having OCD.

I'm not diagnosed with OCD and I don't believe I have it, but it's interessting how you mentioned memory issues and not trusing your memory. I have ADHD and I didn't get diagnosed until I was 18, so shcool for me was a lot of missing assignments, homework and just being very unorganized all the time. As an adult now, I realized that even though I feel like I have dates and deadlines under control, I still get this sneaking suspicion of ''well did I get the numbers right, maybe I read it wrong, maybe I misunderstod'' and it can get into a cycle og double, tripple, quatrouple checking phone numbers, adresses, dates because I know I've had problems with missing details, and it also doesn't help if for years people have just been telling you ''well clearly you aren't even trying''.

If gig is like pub/small show then all the local Aussie death metal and pop punk bands starting when I was 15. At my first one the singer of a band called Diamond Construct climbed onto the landing and jumped down onto the floor 'stage' area while screaming. The owner was pissed but we were cheering. No one can top that for me.

Can you do an episode on restless leg syndrome? It's absolutely bizarre. It feels really weird. It's super comorbid with ADHD, but a lot of people just have it. It's another one of those things that sits at the crossroads of neurological condition and mental condition, more so neurological though. Also can you please have Jamie on to talk about his research into trans people? He made a video on it, but I would really enjoy hearing him have a more in depth conversation about it! I know you already did an episode on trans people, but it would be super cool to have on someone who researches it.

Are there mental health disorders that aren’t a cluster of symptoms? Like ocd, that is roughly when there are invasive thoughts and detrimental compulsions. But it isn’t super clear cut. For other things like losing a finger or having cancer, it is very much a specific “thing” are there mental health disorders that are a specific “thing” or are they all still a package of symptoms that are diagnosed as whatever label we have for it?

Autistic person who also has OCD here! Autistic people do have compulsions that present similarly to intrusive thoughts but that doesn't necessarily mean they have OCD. However we are more preconditioned to developing OCD cause we are more hard-wired to these patterns of thinking.

The one and only gig that I have attended is a bit of a story. So, I was in high school and there was this artistic event that was happening in my city. I can't remember what the function of it was, only that they needed performers and that there was going to be exhibitions and everything. So, the city recruits my high school (among others) to be part of the performance. Somehow I end up signing up for the experience. We do the rehearsals and then it is the day. We get there to the stage where the performances are happening to be told that Locnville (South African electronic boyband) was there and they were performing as well. We get to meet these people (I got my shirt signed - the most thrilling experience of it all) and we got to watch them backstage. Looking back today, it was such a wild sequence of events and I am glad I have those memories.

also yea the cut off for diagnosis is really interesting - like a lot of the time the disorder needs to prevent you from being a 'productive member of society (it feels like they dont care until you are seriously ill) and if ur not u have to do everything in ur power (medication, therapy etc.) to try and make sure u can remain a productive member of society and manage it all urself - I'm not saying that seeking help is a bad thing ( i literally am so grateful and lucky to have professional support with everything I've got going on) but on the more medical side of things like in hospitals its not really about a long term, sustainable approach its more like okay so what can we do to make sure u can be a productive member of society tomorrow : / like it kinda sucks. so it very much feels like they don't care about you they just care that ur obsessions and compulsions are not preventing u from contributing to society : ( ,,, so um it would be kinda cool if they could look at the system as a whole ,, and be like hey maybe we ne need structural , systemic change inclusive of neurodivergent people because at this rate neurodivergent people so often burn themselves out trying to cope in a society not built for them , a society built by and for neurotypical people

The day before was practically a torrential downpour, meaning everything was muddy. I specifically remember this because I got a shirt for that band, but then I slipped and it got mud on it. Months later I was wearing that shirt when I got caught in a sink hole and mud up to my knees. Needless to say I have never worn that shirt since, lest I tempt the gods of mud.

I haven't watched the video but I will follow the rest of the comments section and say what the first gig I went to was. I've only really been to one gig, it's was Eddi Reader when she performed at Burnsfest a few years ago. It was great, loved singing along. I've also technically kind of been to a classical concert, as in I watched two KZfaqrs (TwoSet Violin) livestream Sibelius violin concerto at half 2 in the morning British time a few months ago. Messed up my sleep cycle a bit, but it was worth it.

To celebrate 100 episodes we’re doing a MASSIVE giveaway! To enter just make sure you’re subscribed, like this video, and comment what is the first gig you ever went to? My answer isn’t that exciting and probably doesn’t count because I’ve never been to a gig before. Unless you count going to a pub and hearing awful drunken karaoke. If that’s my first gig I don’t think I want to know what that says about me. XD

I don't remember this at all but when I was really small my parents would sometimes take me to go see classical concerts so I guess one of those would have been the first gig I went to

The first gig I went to was a comedy show by a very famous comedian in my country. But I was too young to know who he was. And because I was really young, I didn't really get his jokes but I still enjoyed the show because everyone else was laughing so, I laughed along. It was Eid around that time so after the show, he gave all the kiddos RM5 including myself. Score! I bought a couple currypuffs with that 5 bucks.
