They filmed the movie in an abandoned prison. The movie starts off in 1947. Red was Irish in the book. Plus his last name was Redding. It's good to know that you understand that people can be rehabilitated while in prison. It's one of the places where people are meant to rehabilitate.

"I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living, or get busy dying." Fun Fact: Raquel Welch, whose One Million Years B.C. (1966) poster plays a significant role in the film, was a big fan of this movie. Music Enthusiast Fact: The opera song that Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) plays over the loud speakers is "Canzonetta sull'aria" from "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart. It was Tim Robbins' idea for Andy to turn up the volume of the record player in the scene. Bird Timing Fact: When Andy goes to the library to begin work as Brooks' (James Whitmore) assistant and Brooks' crow, Jake, is squawking, Tim Robbins had to time his line so that the crow wouldn't squawk over him, since the bird could not be trained to squawk on cue. Robbins was able to time his line perfectly by learning the bird's squawking patterns, for which writer/director Frank Darabont praised him.

Like to show a tip of the hat to the film's original music composer, Thomas Newman. It's an absolutely brilliant score, which earned him his 1st Oscar nomination.

The underlying themes of Shawshank are hope and salvation, hence the importance of the Bible, which is another recurring theme throughout the movie. And, of course, the Good Book is the ultimate source of faith, hope, and salvation for all men. The redemption is Red's, not Andy's - it is Red who has lost his hope and faith in mankind during his long years of imprisonment, and in whom hope needs to be rekindled.

So good. While watching I hadn't even considered whose Redemption it is. It makes since considering states he's an institutional man now. Andy showed him he didn't have to be.

Personally I think maybe the warden was keeping Red from being paroled because he was useful to him as the “guy who could get things” for the prisoners. 🤔

Originally the ending was ambiguous...would Red survive on the outside or die much like Brooks. But preliminary audiences wanted to see Red and Andy reunite so the beach shot was filmed and added before general distribution of the film.

The magic of a good story is that it doesnt come in a long script or a short script. THis is actually a short story from Stephen King, and the adaptation filled the blanks in so many wonderful ways. But what a lot of people do is think a long script, a long story is easier to turn into a movie because you can cut and edit it short. But no, a good story is just a good story and it takes great people to make it better, as it was the case this time. But the story was there, it was so easy to embelish it, because the story arc is perfect.
