One mistake I made here: the old Blu-ray had a 5.1 Dolby Digital track, and this new DTS-HD MA 5.1 is an audio upgrade!

I saw this in the drive in theater when it first came out, and on every format since, several times each. I just got this 4k and I must say, nothing “jarring” at all! It’s hauntingly beautiful. Couldn’t help but get it despite the reviews and boy am I glad I did! A major improvement over the bluray in every way imo.

This was even more exciting for us in the UK as this cut of the film hadn’t previously been available here: this 4K disc had several scenes I’d never seen!

Quite a lot! The whole scene with the doctor, Wendy and Danny near the start, plus the scene with the skeletons near the end, and several others… a full list might be available online somewhere.

I watched it last night and was very pleased with it. I love almost every shot in this movie and it was great to see it in 4K. I actually prefer the standard packaging over the steel book so that’s what I picked up.

Just a thought, but it would be REALLY nice if they went into the Kubrick Archives and used an alternate cover as the cover for the 4k. It'd give most fans something new they've never seen from the man himself. They're actually really neat and almost change the meaning of the film.

I remember when I first saw that you can could buy the shining in 4K I was so happy. I think they should remaster every Stanley Kubrick film in 4K or at least Clockwork orange and full metal jacket. Stanley is a legend.

I watched the 4K and the scene that was actually most striking to me was actually the opening helicopter shots of the landscape, those looked fantastic in 4K! (though the entire film does, so I also recommend the 4K edition lol)

I'm watching it now. This might be the best 4k disc I have ever seen. Just...wow. The clarity. I own Dr. Sleep on 4k and I dont even think that disc looks nearly this good.

Cool! Ima have to check this out! I'm guessing they have the Steadicam guy on because he filmed the Steadicam scenes following the boy as he rode his trike around the hotel, which were among the earliest uses of the technology in films.

This is correct. He talks a lot about Stanley’s process on set and how they agreed and disagreed. The commentary is excellent, and one I will be returning to.

hey Jeff great review of a great classic movie I grew up in Somerville Mass and I've been to the Somerville Theater several times to see many great movies it's a great theater. I just bought the 4K of The Shining and I'm Blown Away of how good the picture is. keep up the great reviews.

I enjoy the 4K. I actually noticed during the free cam, or helicopter footage, that if you look at the top of the screen when the exterior of the hotel is first shown, you can see the helicopter blades, which I never noticed before.

I bought the DVD version and bluray version of The Shining. However, I watched the movie on a multicultural free to air channel on Australian television but it had a two-minute scene that was deleted from the DVD or BD versions. I know every scene in this movie because I am a big Kubrick fan since I first saw the classic 2001 A Space Odyssey film in the 1970s.

The new Blu-ray copy is missing the Theatrical Trailer that was on the previous edition, but I'm not sure that should be a reason to keep the older edition. I just watched the 4K disc on with a Sony UBP-X800 player and a Sony 49X900F TV, and it looked beautiful.

I believe this movie is one of the first if not “the first” movies with a steady cam. Apparently the inventor of the steady cam had problems with the way Stanley Kubrick wanted to do things. But of course the movie turned out amazing.

Will be picking it up since I just realized my Blu Ray of this one is an EU import and is cut down. I would hope every release in every region from here on out would have both versions, but I doubt it

That cover looks so good! I want it! For me it seems alot of the older films looks much better on 4K then newer films since everything is digital now so making old movies shot on film look really good, if that makes sense

The steadicam shots in the shining I.e when Danny is riding through the corridors / on his trike / maze scene are seen as revolutionary at the time (Garrett Brown first used it in Halloween). That’s the relevance of this being on the commentary track

Jesus. Garrett Brown used the steadicam on "Bound For Glory", "Rocky" then "The Shining". Halloween used the Panaglide system developed by Panavision. Garrett Brown didn't work on Halloween at all.

The only, and literally the only 2 thingsI didn't like, is the fact the 4K is overscanned very slightly. It's crystal clear and looks beautiful though. I'd like to have had the option to play either version of the film too, instead of just the longer cut. Apart from this minor things, I loved it ❤️ The Shining is, and has been my favourite SK film for a long, long time. Edit: Although, it is worth mentioning, that the Blu-ray in this release that comes in the case, is from the new 4K master.. it's not the old Blu-ray that we've had since 1921 just slipped into a new case. It is beautiful, too.

Try a microfibre cloth if you have one *(DON’T try any water or chemicals, it could probably damage the disc)*

Does anyone know if the digital copy that comes with it is in 4k or 1080?

It is technically a "4k digital copy," but MoviesAnywhere, VUDU, iTunes, and other linked streaming services don't offer 4k streaming yet, so it will be 1080 until those services are upgraded. When they decide to enable 4k streaming, your digital copy will become a 4k version and you won't have to rebuy it, use a new code, or anything like that. Hope that helps!

When they scan straight from the negatives, does that mean they have to re-edit the film to be the same? Or are the negatives already cut up into the film we know?

It’s from an original negative. 144 minutes. So they don’t need to re-edit, it’s an edited version

In the old days they would cut the original camera negative to conform to the picture that was edited from printed footage, which got pretty grotty during all that handling and passes through the film editing equipment. So it's the original negative that actually ran through the camera which was used for the transfer to 4K, but it's all put together, so it does not need re-editing. The only exceptions would be the optical effects (like dissolves), which would be second-generation (not the camera negative) because they had to be created in an optical printer. Though, if the original elements still exist, the dissolves could have been re-created digitally from the camera negative, too. Ah, the good old days...

Because it was shot on 35mm it technically has a 16:9 aspect ratio, but for some reason they still crop the top and bottom of the frame out so we’re still missin’ some shit

I’m not sure why but the blu ray remaster that comes with this set looks better than the 4K to me. I’ve put each disc in multiple times to cross reference different scenes and each time the blu ray wins out in my eyes. It’s brighter more vibrant and detailed. I’m not sure why this is?

Does the 4k version open up with the Warner brothers big w logo or does it have the shield logo because here’s the list of every version of the movie that I’ve seen: The 1985 abc Sunday night movie broadcast had the distributed by Warner bros television big w logo at the beginning which is very strange considering it should’ve appeared at the end of the movie The 2001 dvd release had the Warner brothers shield logo with the Warner communications byline at the beginning And the 2009 blu ray version has the Warner brothers shield logo with the time Warner entertainment byline at the beginning

Decent channel. You could use more inserts, screen comparisons, etc. It is kind of hard to appreciate a visual medium with no visuals. For example, it would have been really nice to see a picture of the poster you were talking about.

Ok. Ok. Ok I had to stop your video and start typing. Before I explain myself let me tell you I'm a huge movie watcher/ movie collection in blue ray and 4K and love going to the movies. With that out the way. The reason I paused the video is cause I said to myself what this another person trying to do a review on a movie. As you can tell I paused at 2:26 into the video and let me tell you. You got yourself a subscriber giving you a 👍 up. When you started talking about the background of the movie I said Stop!! The DTS-HD Master Audio track should have a marked upgrade in sound quality being 24-bit; compared to the original 16-bit LPCM track. Thanks for the review - one of the best films ever made.

@@JeffRauseo - The Blu-ray has a lossless 16-bit LPCM 5.1 track that sounds great - I've heard it hundreds of times on my system. But the 4K Blu-ray's DTS-HD 5.1 track should be 24-bit, and have a richer fuller sound, higher bitrate. Can you confirm if it's 24-bit? Thanks.

Jeff, could you make a video on your 4K TV settings,to get the perfect picture for 4K? I have a Samsung 58" 4K HDRPro UHD TV and A Philips 4K Dolby Vision Blu Ray player, But I'm not really noticing a difference. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'd love to hop on the 4K train but its not doing it for me.

Obviously Im not Jeff but the settings vary between different model TV's, different content (cable, firestick, DVD, etc.) plus personal preference plays a part. I would suggest doing a search on KZfaq or Google to find a video or article on the best settings for your TV model. Then try these settings and adjust accordingly. I have a Vizio P Quantum and I had to adjust some settings from what is recommended for my liking. Some of the settings to me were too dark or faded. Plus, if you have the extra cash, you can always have your TV professionally calibrated.

I work at BB & it actually is probably the TV. Samsung only makes their edge-lit TVs in 58" & they have poor contrast & clarity. If you want Dolby Vision, you'll need to purchase a TV model by a brand like Sony (I have Sony) or LG but the better TV's with Full-Array lighting or direct-lighting.

@@chadbreedlove5457 Your TV model has at least full array & expanded color, his model most likely is probably pretty hardware limited. I have tons of returns on those cheaper Samsungs at odd sizes like the 6 or 7 series because of poor shadow detail & muted color at BB.

Now after upcoming A Clockwork Orange (in work!) 4K UHD i need only Eyes Wide Shut (1999) in 4K the last great Kubrick movie in 4K and i am = mega super happy till the other two Warner Kubrick movies Barry Lyndon + Full Metall Jacket are not that great Kubrick movies and in 4K not important to me

Barry Lyndon not a great movie? you’re entitled to your own opinion of course but I personally think it’s a masterpiece, I guess I can see why people might find it a bit drawn out but I just think Kubrick’s recreation of that time especially for when the movie was made was incredible and I think would lend itself greatly to 4K and the fact only natural lighting being used on the movie would be very interesting to see on an OLED in HDR

@@kanepovey2781 Yes my opinion only and yes great DP work (without Studio lights) on Barry Lyndon but the movie is to me just ok i will buy the new made 4K transfer 1080p US BLU-RAY no need for REAL 4K UHD

Hey I’m really curious, I see you have a section of arrow video films back there but I’m assuming you’re here in the US. Do you have a region specific player for those or are they region free now? I don’t know much about arrow video but I love the art and packaging of them

Some are Region A, some are region B and some are both. Just check their website or Blu-ray.com to be sure of the region coding for a particular release.

Arrow has a huge US selection now. They sell a lot of titles that are region A

This 4K release seems to have a different aspect ratio, it show less on the edges...please check out 🤔🤔🤔

Yes, but that’s always been the case. It was 1.78:1 here and on the Blu-ray. I know it’s not the original but it’s the best we’ve had on home media.

Films At Home If you compare the blu ray to this 4K release you will see that these are different aspect ratios 😳

What the hell is the thing with that yellowish tint in 4k releases? It was also in Apocalypse now and i didn't really like it... Also in Alien skin tones were towards orange, but it's still my top 3 4k release!
