In this video, we're going to talk about a common misconception about how stretching and strengthening muscles can help with scoliosis.
Many people believe that if they stretch and strengthen their muscles, they'll be able to "fix" their scoliosis. However, this is not true. Stretching & strengthening to correct muscle imbalances and correct scoliosis WILL NOT change the underlying condition (root cause) that is contributing to the issues. In this video I will discuss what you need to do in order to change the underlying condition.

IMHO body mechanics and retraining the nervous system along with energy (basis of life and earth) is the future of health. GI specialists talk about the second brain (gut) and how it the brain, and heart are one neural system. Maybe why so much focus on vagus nerve and ENS/CNS. My PT talks about hyper vigilant muscles esp w/chronic pain. It rewires neural pathways incl incr sensitivity. It’s amazing. Thx Taro. Will look into free master class. I don’t have scoliosis but will watch new videos. Peace and health to all here. ✌️

Totally agree! Brain/nervou system - digestive system are directly connected by vagus nerve. Nervous system, cardiovascular system, muscular system, digestive system, immune system are all connected. Working with our body as one whole system makes a lot of sense. Holistic and systematic approach to our health make a lot of sense. Movement practice is not just for muscles. Movement practice provides a means to improve our functions as a whole!

My pleasure! Gaining muscle flexibility and improving movement fluidity are two different things. Gaining more coordination is a key for gaining movement fluidity, and that's what I teach:)

I like the way you describe the habitual patterns. What a concept to think about the brain and nervous system also being involved, rather than just the muscles. My spinal curvature won't change, but retraining seems sensible.

Improving functions and quality of movement, comfort, quality of life is what matters the most, and that doesn't necessarily mean correcting your structures or how you appear to others.

I finally was able to sign up for the master classes!. Question: is there a lesson that can help to regain the natural cervical curve?✌️
@TaroIwamoto
@TaroIwamoto Жыл бұрын
glad to hear that! not quite sure what the natural cervical curve really means. I understand what you are asking, but honestly i personally question if there is such thing. I have straight neck. I was told many years ago that I need to fix that and regain the normal arch in my cervical spine. Since then I have done movement and nervous system retraining that I share with others today. I am moving much much better and my neck is feeling much much better today than I was many years ago. And yes I still have straight neck today. There are so many things that are suggested by many medical professionals and many have accepted many ideas as common knowledge and we dont even question relevancy and validity of them. Is it necessary to have the "natural curve" in the spine? is there even such thing? I dont know. I try to understand any subject topic with the information available to me and my current knowledge and all my past experiences and try to think logically and see if it makes sense to me or not. But my interpretation will change as I gain new knowledge and experiences. So my understanding is never set in stone.

@@TaroIwamoto With all due respect: I have been doing Feldenkrais for about two years, and your answer totally confused me. I have X-rays of before and after two of Feldenkrais, and it shows my scoliosis is all but gone. During the last four months in specific, I started to have little painless, pops in the places that I have issues, and my condition has improved very noticeably during this time. I don't have the knowledge that you have with Feldenkrais, I only expressing my experience, and I have seen some lessons (spine like a chain) that are claimed to help get the spine's natural curves. So I really don't know what to take from your answer, which seems to be for people with a much higher knowledge of Feldenkrais that I have, but then again, there are my x-rays. Thank you and take care ✌️

@@luyzqint3760 Thank you for expressing and sharing your experience with me and others here. My response and comment to your comment were also simply to express my feelings and thoughts not to disagree and reject your thoughts and feelings. I genuinely question many things that I mentioned. I don't know the answer. Over many years, what thought was common knowledge based on what i was taught in schools became not so true based on my own somatic experience (that has nothing to do with knowledge of human body and movement). Once I believed that I had to have certain body posture, movements based on biomechanical studies, which I learned in schools, and I didn't even question that, even when those supposedly "correct" posture and biomechanics felt uncomfortable in my body. I see that I was not alone, and I see many going through and are being in the same state I was and have gone through, so I can relate. By no means, I am not denying your own experience and feelings in your body. By no means, I am not criticizing your experience, thoughts, feelings. I'm only expressing and sharing my own experience, feelings, and thoughts, and believe that sharing my perspective here with others would be helpful for some people. But, I apologize if my comment made you confused and uncomfortable. I am glad that your condition has improved! That's really what matters!

My scoliosis became so severe after I had a total hip replacement, there is a noticable offset now it isn't possible to counter that with movement retraining is it?
@TaroIwamoto
@TaroIwamoto Жыл бұрын
a great observation and question. It's common a hip replacement will lead to significant leg length discrepancy. Replaced side sometimes becomes longer. If the difference is significant enough to cause very noticeable compensation in standing and gait, affecting your comfort, functions, then I would consult with your surgeon as well as your physical therapist (if you're working with PT). They may recomend an orthotic to reduce leg length difference, which will also influence the spine (degree of scoliosis) and your functions.

Is this also legit for kyphosis and forward head posture or just scoliosis?
@TaroIwamoto
@TaroIwamoto Жыл бұрын
yes absolutely! This applies to any conditions, at least that's my perspective, which is not a common perspective. I think from a functional perspective. In case of kyphosis and forward head posture, I think about how one uses/moves his/her body in day to day activities, and how their habitual movement patterns relate to their posture, and think about how to retrain their nervous system via movement retraining. If you start to move differently in your day to day activities, then you will start to change your habitual posture. Does that make sense?

My spine is so tight I can’t even lie on my back. It is stuck in hyper-extension as well as scoliosis. I had surgery years ago but it clunked and got stuck further up. Occasionally it would clunk and everything would let go. The longest the relief lasted was 2 days in 22 years. After coming off benzos it is now so tight I can’t even lie on my back and can’t sit fir long because of Craniocervical instability. I also have ME/cfs and EDS. I have tried so many things. Any idea if this might help - my energy is very limited.
