The problem with Adelaide is the normal street drains have the 4 tonne concrete blocks that the safety fence is built out of sitting in them and they only have two forklift tine holes in the bottom of them to allow any rain to flow past hence the rain had no where to go once it hit the road surface. I was a volunteer marshal at that GP.

Basically the difference between Senna - Aus '91 and Prost - Monaco '84 was that nobody was closing in on Senna at the time. Mansell had already lost control of his car. In '84 ironically Senna and Bellof were chasing Prost down. I think that's a contributing factor to why I appreciate Senna's race more.

I was at the last race in Adelaide in 1995 having flown from the UK via Perth (where I grew up). I seem to recall that Morbidelli's car was leaking fluids and it stank. I remember the 1991 race which was only available as a 30 minute (?) highlight package in the UK. I was watching it with my brother and we noticed that there wasn't much (or any) and worked out the race would be red flagged.

The Canadian GP, back in 2011, the water could only drain into two large underground cisterns. Tanker trucks had to come to drain the cisterns to try to keep up (and couldn't). Despite being in the middle of a river, the water couldn't just be dumped, it had to go through sewage treatment before release. The track has changed and I don't believe it is reliant on the cisterns anymore.

Thanks for the story, and I'm actually impressed that il Leone managed an entire F1 championship, making a joke out of his teammate, with a broken foot! As for what Prost said about the Ferrari, saying he compared the 643 to a lorry is bit of a stretch. As a Frenchman myself, the original sentence I've found does read a lot more nuanced than that. It can be heard that way, but it's a stretch nonetheless.

I remember the 1989 AGP well, as I was underneath the stands on the outside of the final corner, watching most of the race on a small, portable tv that someone had brought and only paying attention to what was happening on the track if it happened in front of me, such as Senna's multiple rotations that Murray Walker added the famous "spin spin spin round round round he goes" on the tv broadcast. It was absolutely bucketing down that day, as can happen in Adelaide: dry for ages, then an absolute drenching. It happened just last year, with the addition of cyclonic winds that threatened to rip off everyone's rooftops and let the wet in. So believe me when I say that the rain in 1991 was magnitudes worse than 1989. The race should never have gone ahead.

I also live in Adelaide, but have no memory of the race - because I was touring Israel at the time. The same in 1989. The only 2 times I've ever toured Israel, and the only 2 washout races in the GP. Perhaps it's my fault 😄 although the statistical sample is small. I'm too tight-fisted to buy a grandstand seat, so I paid $20 for General Admission (standing in the outer) in 1985 - saw nothing, heard no comentary until the final 2 laps (when most of the noisy cars had retired). It was then that I decided to watch all others on Channel 9 (top job, BTW) in the comfort of my home.

I lived in the Adelaide hills and though not at the race I remember being disappointed with the shortened duration. I'm from Adelaide and I clearly remember the 2 wet races in 1989 and 1991. 1989 was bad enough, but the rain that hit in 1991 was far worse. There had actually been improvements made to help with drainage after the 1989 race, but the rain in 1991 was too much for even the improvements to handle.

In motorcycle racing, they usually nominate some very experienced (or in the very junior classes, those who seem to have their heads screwed on best) as in effect "rain judges". Anyone is allowed to wave their hands and point to the sky on passing the pits, but when those with championships and double-digit win numbers after their names say "it's too much", the red flag goes out. They are trusted to make the correct decision based on safety, not that they might lose some good points if it continues, and it works as a rule. If only one of them (probably in the lead) wants to stop and the others don't flinch, the race continues unless race control decides otherwise - that's usually if there have been crashes deemed to have been caused by the rain. On the grounds that if only the leader calls for a stoppage, they will be perceived negatively by their colleagues, it acts as a deterrent from calling it too soon. This can so easily be moved across to F1 that I'm surprised it isn't. The selection usually has racers throughout the grid (3-5 of them I think, depending on grid size), because the further back you are, the worse it can be. It gives race control a better image of how it's affecting everyone. I genuinely don't see why they don't have it in all forms of racing. I'm sure some 4-wheel series will already be utilising it. Listen to those whose neck is on the line. That includes the marshalls.

Aidan, another great video. Thanks. Interesting that you mentioned at 2:00 'Brundle and Blundell, that wouldn't get confusing at all'. During their flight from Japan to Australia for this very race, Mark Blundell was mistakenly given Martin Brundell's boarding pass, which allowed him to sit in first class. Blundell thought that he had been promoted to first driver status. Martin Brundell was not pleased at all and tried explaining and arguing with a Japanese hostess that there had been a mistake and that it was he himself who should be allowed to sit in 1st class. However, on the boarding passes, Mark Blundell and Martin Brundell are written exactly the same in the Japanese Katakana script. So Martin Brundell was unable to convince the hostesses to allow him into 1st class. So he sat in economy for the whole flight, much to his anoyance. Martin Brundell makes no mention of this story in his 'Working the wheel' book, or anywhere else it appears. The story was told by Mark Blundell in a magazine interview.

There is something very special to me about this race, I was there! It was the 1st race I had ever seen live and probably remains the only time I got sunburned (on Saturday when it was in the mid 30's) and drowned in one weekend! I also got to meet Murray Walker, who did a Sunday morning Breakfast event for charity and went with a friend (and Englishman, who had been to many F1 GP's before he immigrated). We drove from Melbourne to Adelaide and stayed with some friends of his. I didn't get to see F1 live again until 2000 and I didn't get to see a full race until 2005! Ah the memories!!

In a way, the body language of all the drivers after the (officially) 14 laps run at that year's Grand Prix in Adelaide shows how unhappy they were. Senna was pretty blunt in saying that he didn't consider it a race at all, that it was just a case of staying on the track. He commented that standing water was so bad in the back straight that he didn't dare go above third gear for the risk of aquaplaning into the walls on either side of the track. Having said that, at least actual racing took place, unlike Spa 2021

No safety car. Normal start in those conditions. I remember Senna spinning 180 and just carrying on. He was winning by quite some way when Murray Walker exclaimed.Senna has only got 3 wheels!...To put it into perspective as to how times have changed, I remember Walker asking James Hunt if there was much danger to life and limb. Hunt replied, that although it's there, the track is designed to catch cars going much faster in dry conditions, so implied its all good. Those were the days..Watch the highlights of Aus 89 Gp.

I'd even say Australia had the best street circuits in the world (considering also Surfers Paradise, Albert Park and even smaller tracks used for Supercars). And if you find it funny to mispronounce non-English names like Gugelmin, try Lyendyke next time.

McLaren won the shortest gp in history with Ayrton Senna. Then 20 odd years later they won the longest with Jenson Button.

See much like Aidan - who doesn't call the 2021 Belgian GP a race, I don't consider the Canadian GP in 2011 to BE the longest. The only reason why the race time is four hours is because sometime between the 2001 Belgian GP and the 2007 European GP, they changed Race Stopped to Race Suspended and they didn't stop the race clock anymore - for reasons that defy logic. If you time just the race you are left with a winning time of 2:00:27, which is 18 seconds quicker than Olivier Panis' win at Monaco in 1996 The true longest race to me is the German GP of (I think) 1956 which lasted 3:45:00 which had no red flags

@@AidanMillward. Been to both. Wide open streets, in the centre of the city made for a terrific atmosphere. Surfaces are all better these days so that’s less of an issue. Adelaide’s weather is also more reliable. Just curious Aiden; why do you prefer Melbourne’s track? Combination of corners and straights?

When people whinge about Belgium '21 and Japan' 22, show them this. We 'lEt ThEm RaCe', and they crashed. Still think they've got no balls? Senna's statement "We've got to take into consideration, for once, our lives." is one of the biggest takeaways from this event. If he says you can't race, you can't bloody race. Meanwhile, there was no confusion about how many laps we did or did not do, just dole out half points and go home. They did that in Belgium, we had a result, we didn't go through qualifying for nothing by having no points at all, so I reject all complaints about that occasion. This whole 'sliding scale of points' bollocks - I hate it, it's so unnecessary - and related wording related regulatory dancing in Japan would not have happened if they'd just done what they did here after Belgium. Say, 'oh well, shit happens, guys', accepted half points and gone home. But no, we live in the Drive to Survive era, so we live by the American 'no ties' code. This race stands as a template for what to do when things become untenable. Didn't know Mansell broke his foot though. I always went by Murray Walker's description from the highlights of "a ricked neck and twisted knee". Ouch.

Guarantee if Lando had been t-boned and hurt in qualifying when he spun at Spa in 2021 the people screaming let them race would have piled on the FIA asking how the hell it was allowed to happen.

If you are referring to the 2021 Belgian GP as the "shortest race" in F1 then that doesn't count to me. Michael Masi was so desperate for Verstappen to win the title that year.
