You're leading a race, then you have to pit, then you're a lap down, then you undo that lap by being one of the greatest drivers of all time in one of the best cars of all time, and come within three miles of winning the grand prix before your fuel pump says it can't take any more cap'n.
But that's what happened to Jim Clark in the 1967 Italian Grand Prix
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

There was 1 race where Clark got the 49 to work: the 1968 South African Grand Prix. Clark was on pole, a full second faster than Hill in the same car and won the race, leading Hill over the line by 25.3 seconds. Rindt was 3rd and the last car on the same lap - 4th was Amon in his Ferrari, 2 laps down. It was Clark's last F1 win and final F1 race before his death at Hockenheim.

Nahh 7 is way too much for the 60s/70s, one of the most competitive eras. I reckon he could definitely had won 1968 and 1970, even 1969 with some luck. Probably would have ended with at least 4-5 championships a feat of which, equalling Fangio, he would have been proud of. But i think seven is just too much for anything before 1980s competitive wise. How Fangio won 5 championships, and finished runner up (extremely close btw) two more times is absurd.

I remember watching this race on telly and Clark's speed outshone everyone else's performance that day. Such a shame that the fuel pump failed and gifted the win to Surtees in the Honda who had a lot of input from Eric Broadly of Lola to thank.

When Jimmy Clark came to Indianapolis for the 1963 500 I knew right away that he was destined to be one of, if not THE greatest driver in all of racing. I dare say that even the provincial Indy fans knew this to be fact as well. Jimmy along with Colin Chapman & Dan Gurney literally changed the face of that historic Memorial Day "Greatest Spectacle in Racing"...Forever!

This is one of the reasons I think its damn near impossible to say who is the greatest driver of all time. Championships do not necessarily mean greater drivers as we all know that right driver in the right car at the right time will often be the biggest factor here. For instance is Jacques better than his dad because he won a championship and his dad didn't? (just for the record I am a fan of both so this is not a dig at JV). Plus eras make a huge difference too. The quality of drivers around you, the tracks on the calendar, how many races per year and of course the cars themselves. You cannot deny the greatness of drivers for sure, but how do you decide who is better? You can compare the likes of Clark and Stewart or Senna and Prost, but you cannot compare Fangio to Clark, Schumacher, Lauda, Hamilton, Senna, Mansell, Prost, M.Verstappen or Vettel because there are just too many variable. And that is just talking about champions. Moss, G.Villeneuve, Peterson or Montoya, all are what could have beens. Or what if Clark or Senna had not died when they did? I will never involve myself in arguments as it all comes down to personal choice at the end of the day.

One correction. During that era, the green flag was only used to signal for the drivers to move forward from the dummy grid to the real grid. The national flag of that country was used to signify the start. The person with the Italian flag unfurled it before the grid was all forward and stopped, and the race started.

Aiden. If you get a chance you should do the story of the 1987 Talledega 500. It went down in history for 3 events: (A): being the fastet NASCAR race in history with Bill Elliot qualifing on pole with an average speed of 211 MPH and the average race speed being just a hair under 204 mph (B): Donnie Allison had a horrifying crash in which his car almost went through the catchfencing and into the crowd on the front straight (C): it was the last nascar race on a super speedway to be run without the restrictor plate, which was immediately introduced to limit speeds at said venues as a result of the allison crash.

@@katana1430 Bill's brother enrie built all the engines for his famous coors ford thunderbirds. Another Italian Grand Prix that doesn’t get spoken about nearly enough is the 2004 edition. Schumacher span at the 2nd chicane and was last at the end of lap 1 and still finished 2nd just behind barrichello who himself had to stage a comeback as he started on intermediate tyres on a rapidly drying track when everyone around him were on the dry tyres.

Jim Clark did more in the most dangerous era than any other driver and with how he had to drive, it is clear he may have been the greatest driver of all time. Senna, Schumacher, Stewart and Hamilton have all done more wins and on paper been better drivers but outside of Stewart, the others didn't drive cars that were so fragile. And Stewart was adamant he was not a Clark. AJ Foyt didn't think he was inferior any human in a race car had great admiration for Clark.

@@19megamustaine85 they raced about a third of the races per year that Prost did. They raced in cars far less reliable and dangerous as well. I think Clark's 25 wins and Stewart's 27 are far more outside of their cohorts in an era that was far more tenuous and in seasons where 8 to 10 races was the norm. We won't even go into the fact they raced in other events as well. Prost, Senna and Schumacher all raced around 15 races a year in similar cars and now we see Max and Lewis racing 22 plus times a year in cars that rarely die and in cars where they have no great fear of injury. You can't compare eras without acknowledging that reality

Enzo was a broken spirit back then, more so than how he dealt with Lauda and Villeneuve. He was being tormented by both his wife & mother back then during the 1960s which subsequently created the 'Great Ferrari ' walkout. He was so discombobulated with his organization that he let John Surtees go after the Spa race, since Surtees & Eugenio Dragoni couldn't see eye-to-eye about getting ready for the 1966 Le Mans race. Long story short, accordingly Surtees left in mid-season, of 1966 , while Eugenio Dragoni got fired after the 1966 season. So what did Surtees do? He won the 1967 Italian GP right in front of Enzo's face - in a Eric Broadley designed car powered by Honda.
