The Smith's weren't so much as a band but a state of mind- an outlook. They captured the spectrum of passion inside us as youths in a way you could savor it -over time like a jolly rancher vs a Hershey's kiss (gone in a second). I'm 48 now and much of that soulfull kid has vanished due to the trials and tribulations of life, however Everytime I here their music, a tiny drop of that emotion runs through my bloodstream ever so subtlety. I'm glad I was part of those times, and I feel fortunate life hasn't complely numbed my soul. YOUTH OF TODAY HEAR ME CLEARLY- BOTTLE THAT PASSION AND IF YOU CAN NEVER LET IT GO.!! You make think it will be like this forever but it won't.....

In the summer of 87, I was studying film at the University of London. It was my first time out of the United States. I played this about 200 times during that time in a pub called The Yorkshire Grey, near Fitzroy Square. Pretty sure that jukebox and the local patrons were sick of me. I've never been sick of this song. Johnny Marr's guitar sound on this is one for the ages.

I used to date a guy…….. who was a DJ. He had a huge vinyl collection! He knew how much I loved Morrissey, Soo He played this song for me every morning to wake me up when I would spend the night at his house. He was the first one to play this song for me! I thought that I knew all of Morrisey’s and Smith ‘s music, but this was a B-side that I totally missed. Whenever I would spend the night at his house, he would wake me up with this song, and it brings back all the feels!!!!!

Andy Rourke is vastly under rated and always over looked ,his bass lines are superb and carry the smiths songs so beautifully along with mike's drum beats

Mike Joyce sets the perfect groove for ALL Smiths songs. People who are saying he plays simple parts are full of it. Every one of his fills is perfectly laid out, and his grooves are utterly infectious. They would not have become famous without him. Fine maybe someone else could've done it. I'm not so sure on all songs, like this one, and Stop Me If You've Heard This, and How Soon Is Now. Bigmouth Strikes again on drums and bass? PLEASE RECREATE THAT, BIG MOUTHS! You can really hear the difference when others cover their songs. I'm not diminishing the massive talents of Morrissey Marr, but Joyce and Rourke (also integral) deserved at least SOME publishing in my mind. No fricking doubt about it.

Oddly enough, "boot the grime of this world in the crotch dear" has recently become one of my favorite lyrics that Morrissey wrote as a Smith. I like to think that it pairs nicely with "it takes strength to be gentle and kind". Both are lyrics that inspire me to be a better person and to fight on behalf of the marginalized and underprivileged.

How wonderfully swishy and charming! This from a hardcore punker taking a rare look over the fence and seeing that the neighbors weren't concerned with manly stances and and strong words. Yeah, I know this is from the 80's, I was there too, but I chose to go the hardcore route. I'm kind of discovering this band at 50, I just had to wait to mature to appreciate songs about girls with insecurity issues.

As I recall, the Smiths were the biggest band in the UK when this came out. They were massive.

Many folk believe this song has a reference to Shelagh Delaney, perhaps it does, but let me give you all another possibility. 26/10/86 The London Palladium at the age of 12 I saw the Smiths with my older brother and sister. Our parents took us there and once safely in they went off to wherever returning in time for us after. We went to the stage door and waited in the hope we might see them leaving. Our hopes of seeing Morrissey were dashed when a lady also waiting told us Morrissey had already gone but the others were on their way. The lady then introduced herself as Andy’s Mum and asked my sister if she’d like the poster she was holding signed, 5 mins later she returned with a fully signed poster. Yep one of the others signed ‘Morrissey’ too which was a lovely touch. We left ecstatic and returned home where our Mum said she needed to tell us something before we went to bed. She said after we had gone in she & our Dad went to the stage door and saw Morrissey arriving. As he got out my Mum approached him but was moved back by a couple of security guys, she ducked underneath their arms and came face to face with Morrissey who simply said “hello”. She explained how we were inside and asked if he could sign a poster she’d bought. The security attempted to move her back again but Morrissey said it was ok and asked her her name. She said Sheila. He went to sign it but she asked if he could write it to my sister. He asked my Mum was she also going in and she said no, that it was my sister who was the one who had come out tonight to see him because she loved him. Skip forward to June 87 and my sister and I met Morrissey outside his home, she told him how he’d met our Mum at the Palladium and asked him if Sheila take a bow was a reference to her. Morrissey remembered and said Sheila without us saying anything. He then simply smiled and shrugged his shoulders, he did not answer. So maybe this song is a reference to my Mum and my sister, “Come out and find the one that you love and who loves you” Perhaps it’s not and Morrissey didn’t want to upset us as he could clearly see the hope in a 12 & 15 year old eyes that it was. I’ll never know and I love that.

I'm 51 too, Hope the young people out there who think they know proper music get to hear this band! Seminal!!!!! A band who connected with people ..Generations even. Far better than what's out there now i my opinion.
