When he sings - as soft as a prayer at the end - the old Hank Locklin song “Send Me The Pillow You Dream On” is one of the greatest moments in rock music.

Morrissey took that lyric from Send me the Pillow you Dream on, covered and popularised by Dean Martin. But hey, as Morrissey's hero Oscar Wilde said, " Talent borrows, genius steals."

Morrissey took it from the 1960's British film A Taste of Honey written by Shelagh Delaney based on her book by the same name ... Shelagh Delaney used the song title in the book/screenplay, it's a line in the movie. Morrissey loved Shelagh Delaney and A Taste of Honey. Shelagh Delaney is on the cover of Louder than Bombs and the actress from the film is on the cover of the Hand In Glove single, the one with Sandie Shaw on vocals.

@@oscillatewildly6553 As a huge Smiths fan, I am aware of Shelagh and the wonderful film, but didn't know it was the source of the quote. Thanks for enlightening me.

@@stephenberrells1471 I can tell you're a huge fan because fans love finding stuff out! I was a little hesitant as I wrote my comment because I didn't want to look like a "smarty pants" or like I was trying to "one up you"... The thing is you are right that the line comes from that song, I'm guessing it was written into the book, or film because it was popular at the time. I was impressed that you quoted Oscar Wilde, Particularly that line!

@@oscillatewildly6553 Hello my friend. We both know the world of Morrissey fans and having left Twitter years ago because of abuse from some, well, I wondered. I suspect we share the desire to enlighten people on the band. I have lived in Catalunya for many years and teach English as a foreign language. Most listening exercises tend to revolve around Yes , I am Blind and I Don't Owe You Anything. No offence taken and thanks for being so thoughtful.

Half of Morrisseys lyrics were borrowed from books, politicians so on.

Wally, there is a live version of them performing this song and Morrissey sings the final verse not heard in the studio recording. "On the shop floor, there's a calendar, as obvious as snow, as if you didn't know. " Johnny was disappointed in the lyrics for what he considered one of his best riffs. I was for a long while too, but over time they've grown on me. Over that beautiful sound coming from the band, any lyrics would grow on me. Turns Morrissey's lyrics are not nearly as throwaway as I once thought, and definitely not his delivery either It's a damn near perfect song.

Morrissey is saying that what is apparently trivial in life is actually the most important. To young men, as they were at time of writing, relationships and girls were the most important thing in life, and also women and girls come in all shapes and sizes and grades of physical attractiveness; such evaluations of attractiveness are purely cultural, thus the most consequential is the most trivial, and the most definitive is the most arbitrary. The simple happiness of being two people in love is the most important thing in life. Behind the apparent cynicism this is a poignantly romantic song.

Can you react to one of his newer ones ? (Spent the day in bed). He also has completed a new album that he says is his best ever. He is currently waiting on the highest bidding record company to release it.

I adhere to the theory that Mozz, when faced with another amazing Marr composition, decided to honour it by not smothering it with too much vocal. However, I could also be persuaded that he deliberately undermined the tune with a sparse flippant lyric. What I am convinced of, though, is that this is not a song about women.

It’s just Morrissey sardonicism at it’s best. He’s mocking the male obsession with big boobs! 6:02 This line appears to be romantic on the surface, but here he’s talking about 2 pillows, “pillows” being a euphemism for breasts.

i might be stretching it a bit here, but again i have to go with Morrisey's "queerness"...some girls are bigger than others. a lot of gay men call each other "girl/girlfriend". so that some are bigger than others could be to do with dick size, lol! but if it really has anything to do with women it could as easily be about breast size, or as you say "socially", that some are considered more important than others in status. again Morrisey confounds and amuses with ambiguity so each listener gets to bring their own interpretation. for me the reference to Anthony and Cleopatra and a crate of ale (and "oh i say"), is to do with Morrisey's love/hate relationship with the "Carry On" movies that were part of that working class culture that Morrisey himself came from. At the time these films had two very effete campy gay men and Morrisey was a fan of one of them, Charles Hawtrey. "Oh I say" was often heard in just about every Carry On film, usually in response to something cheekily salacious! and of course there was a Carry On Cleopatra! I couldn't tell you if there was a crate of ale that got opened...but i wouldn't be surprised!
