That's funny, The Smiths made me depressed so I'd go listen to the B-52's or something... All jokes aside I'm glad you overcame your depression. Growing up in the 80's wasn't all bubble gum and popcorn for a lot of people. And by the way I love The Smiths. Can't help but think of that one girl when I hear this song..

The Smiths were and still are beloved. I saw Morrissey live about 7 years ago. At that time, he was 50 years old performing to a crowd mostly in their late teens and early twenties. People around me were crying and visibly shaken watching in almost disbelief. A true testament to his ability to reach people emotionally thru his songs.

The music is about this person that not feel in home where he lives, and there´s ths other person who takes the first one out to where there´s music, lights and people, and this person never want to go home, but when he is finally dropped off in they way home he thinks in the car, "What a great night and a great person with me, if i died tonight would be a privilege to been in here", it´s not like he´s wishing to both of them to die in a accident.

The Smiths' trademark. The music can sound playful and fruity, almost like you could use it in a commercial, and the lyrics are often dark and always thoughtful. I think that a lot of the lyrics are considered to be darker than they actually are. I think Morrissey's very dark humor gets lost when what people want to hear is a depressing song. This song is, musically, pretty straightforward but they are all stellar musicians. It's difficult to be a guitar player or a bass guitar player and not respect this band.

Like so many avant garde indie rock groups, they were an acquired taste. Each group had its own trademark sound, with lyrics that actually said something. Interlude, a duet between Morrissey and Siouxsie that was a cover released in’94, didn’t get the acknowledgment it should have.

You made a great comment about this strange thing that always rounded The Smiths: the music made by Marr, Joyce and Rourke and the lyrics written by Morrissey. You pointed it out very wisely. At the same time you get this vibrant music, you get a slap in your face when you listen to the lyrics. Morrissey, the lyricist, said that he really had the sense that part of the band didn't undestand what he was singing about. Mike Joyce, the drummer, during an interview said: "Of course we were concerned about him [Morrissey]. We all [in the band] knew that he was talking about something very personal. We obviously did not discuss lyrics' content with him. It was a place he surely did not want us to join."

Oh dear. I saw them in concert at Portsmouth Polytechnic in 1983. Wonderful music that endures. You have to understand the movement around The Smiths at the time. We all aspired to the Morrissey haircut, jeans etc. They were the IN band along with New Order, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen. The other groups of teenagers followed Spandau Ballet, wham and Tears for Fears. It was the divide between following commercial bands or hip independent ones.

How Soon is Now? is the first Smiths song that I liked. I went out with a girl who gushed about Morrissey. He seemed weepy and overly dramatic when I'd hear him on the radio. Then I heard How Soon is Now? and I thought, "Hey wait a minute... This is brilliant". I listened to the Your Arsenal album and I realized that a lot of the weepy stuff is just a clever bit of dark humor. I almost reluctantly became a fan. How could you not?!

As someone who grew up bi in South Carolina through the late 1970's, early 80's this song hit me like a ton of bricks. The first time I heard it on the radio I had to pull over until the shaking died down enough for me to drive safely again. Morrisey's lyrics speak directly to the sense of cultural and religious oppression and suppression that LGBT youth were experiencing at the time, no support, no safety net. The light that never goes out is HOPE. Hope for change, hope that people won't turn away, hope that they won't turn you out on the street. Unfortunately that light did die for way too many and they extinguished their own peculiar light either directly or through self-destructive behavior.

Exactly, The Smiths get respect because they defy those expectations that you and a lot of people have who like radio friendly mainstream music....the music paints a picture that goes totally against what Morrissey (lead singer) writes and sings about. I've always found that exciting about them, personally. They play with irony, they aren't afraid of expressing emotions that most people find inappropriate and despite their bland, bookish appearance (at least in their early days), they always had that post punk attitude of not giving two shits about people's perceptions of them. 😏✌✌

@@genghissmith4949 so when I did stevie ray Vaughn voodoo child. You're saying i need to react to it several more times? That would not work my reaction would not be the same because I'm going to know what to expect. If First Reactions are worthless then why are 90% of my comments stating "I love your REACTION to this?" Comments hardly ever say I love your analysis of this after you listen to it five or six times . If it's that hard to understand then there's nothing else I can say. After this I will say no more. Good day to you.

Still Ill is another great Smiths song. And while you're at it, how about Every Day is Like Sunday - a smooth as silk ballad about nuclear annihilation!

Lots of geeks were bullied in the 70 and 80s and then Morrissey and The Smiths came along. Suddenly a geek was the coolest guy in England. His lyrics spoke to a very unhappy generation with little oppurtunity. You have to understand the context of what Britain was like when The Smiths arrived. I remember the absolute exhilaration of hearing them for the first time and finally hearing my voice. Cemetry Gates is a fav of mine. Please react to it.

Moz's lea-ricks fills a nich or a need in confused teenagers and Morrissey knew that. It's his Marketing style and great sounds that filled a void in so many kids hearts that they could relate to his words - with the misery and the slap stick funniness of his message. It worked fabulously and made him a millionaire. He is a very weird guy but I absolutely LOVE his music!

Morrissey was speaking to a disenfranchised and unhappy youth in the eighties. It was a time of rising unemployment and a lack of oppurtunity. His melancholy tunes and starkly honest, dark and yet comedic lyrics spoke to a generation. The Smiths were easily the biggest band in the world at the height of their popularity. Morrissey is still seen as a god by many to this day.

hi. have i told you about John Martyn? forgive me if i've told you about this already, but i'm terminally ill and pretty much housebound.i spend most of my time listening to music and i discovered you 'reactors' fairly recently. i'm thrilled to see a new generation turning on to music i've loved since the 60s and 70s. my favourite are pink floyd, but i'm trying to promote a little known artist from the UK called john martyn. the best of the UK musicians all rate him very highly. i've recently come across a video of him live singing 2 songs welded together as one. it's called, 'She's a Lover/Solid Air' and i think it's 12 minutes of musical perfection. it's so smooooth, warm, chilled, and just exquisitly beautiful. you like to do different stuff and i really like that. so i assume those who watch you do, too. so i'd be very happy if you would react to him. i know what you like, and i think you'd like this a lot.

Suburban white kids (like me!!) used to listen to this stuff, dress in black and mope around the house. That didn't last long. Grunge came in with Nirvana and the kids traded their black in for flannel shirts & faded jeans. Once again, I did too. My, how time slips away!

The Smith's themes are mostly unrequited / obsessive love and nostalgia for times lost. They have / had a name for making depressive music, but only some of their music is about despair hopelessness , most is about romantic regret or longing. A Smiths track with a very different kind of lyric is 'Cemetery Gates' - here the lyric is playful, rather than serious. It even has a joke in it.

The Smiths were a band at a very unique time in the early eighties . Janko Pop is the definition. Their songs are all different. The reasons for writing lyrics are a mystery . Usually there is an inspiration or simply a story to tell. Sometimes someone’s else’s story . This band struck a chord with a good pairing of musicians. The band is REM is similar to story telling with deep lyrics …the difference is the Smiths gave Johnny Marr. The greatest rythum quitarist of all time . The Smiths recorded some amazing dance tunes …the bass playing and Marr are superior . Trying to analyze lyrics is up to the listener. I’ve written 80 recorded songs . So don’t try to over analyze what someone writes …we just absolutely have a great time telling stories and making things up ..words are a beautiful thing. A writer finds the list creative words that exists on their conscience and go with it . It’s fun !!! Don’t be sad !!
