Jake Black, who has died aged 59, co-founded Alabama 3, the British band known for The Sopranos theme, Woke Up This Morning, which became indelibly linked with the mould-breaking television series about a New Jersey crime family. It was by chance, according to most accounts, that David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, first heard the little-known Brixton-based band on his car radio. He bought their 1997 debut LP Exile on Coldharbour Lane and was immediately taken (“The feel of it was really great”) by the third track, Woke Up This Morning, written by Black and Rob Spragg.

As everyone else has pointed out, the intro is amazing in it's cinematography. But not only is it fantastic for that reason. but it performs an amazing job at introducing us to the setting of the show. Nearly every single new shot is introducing new information about the context of the show. All of the shots at the beginning tell us information about where the show is set. NYC skyline. We know it's in or near NYC. N.J Turkpike. Twin towers in the mirror. Tony. Cigar. Gold chains. Someone of status. The way he takes the ticket. General hostility towards the world. Close up on the cigar. Trucks. Industrial area. Closeup on chains. Cigar smoke in face intro. Working class Neighborhood. Italian shops. Surburbs. Nice House. With all this information, from the intro, without ever watching the show we can figure out the show is about a mob boss, working in New Jersey. All without any words. It truly is a work of art.

RIP Tony Sirico aka Paulie Walnuts Gualtieri (1942-2022). I'm sure you woke up this morning next to the legendary James Gandolfini and got some gabagool

I love how we follow Tony as he presumably leaves some sort of meeting with the New York Family in Manhattan and returns home to the setting of the story that we get to watch - the time spent with his two "families" in Jersey.

Cryer24597 This guy knows. I thought Breaking Bad was amazing, but then I moved onto The Wire and then The Sopranos and it just got blown out of the water. Still a great show but those two are immense.

Breaking Bad is a great show but you shouldn't even compare it to Sopranos. Sopranos is just in another league.

I love The Sopranos and Breaking Bad about even. I'd like to think that while The Sopranos is going on in NJ, the events of BB are going down in New Mexico.

Drove truck on the NJTP often during that time. Every time I hear the theme I remember the sights, sounds and smells of NJ. The "DRIVE SAFELY" logo graced a storage tank in the Exxon refinery which was usually my destination.
