With one of the lowest birth rates in the world, South Korea is in danger of disappearing by the end of the millennium. If the situation stays as it is, South Koreans are predicted to become extinct by 2750. Because of the rapidly aging population, elderly prostitutes known as "Bacchus ladies" have cornered a number of public parks as their working areas. Meanwhile, South Korean kids are living with their families well into their 20s-as a result, an entire economy of sex motels has sprung up to give kids a place to fool around outside the watchful eyes of their parents.
We sent Matt Shea to investigate this generational crisis, which led him to Seoul's red-light district, a pre-wedding photo shoot on the set of a Korean soap opera, and an erotic sculpture park on South Korea's "honeymoon island."

Ahmet Selim Karaca - Well if his point is to show how he is uncomfortable with being shoved into the fake-romantic picture with a stranger, he could have said just that. But now the whole visit to the wedding photoshoot place, shown in a documentary about Korean love life, edited to look like a "bizarre" weird culture shock experience, just made it look like he was just trying to prove that this entire Korean way of doing romantic activities is odd and somehow wrong. I have been to a wedding photoshoot in Korea with my friend, just because we wanted to try out some pretty dresses and see how they would look like. Nothing awkward or weird about it, and I can 100% tell you it would have been even funnier if I had been there with my romantic partner (who would have enjoyed this idea), because we could test what we looked like as a bride and groom without any sorts of commitments. This kind of a business branch is not something to clutch your pearls about, or to be upset of. It's a light-hearted, playful detail in the Korean business industry, and I don't really see why that had to be added to this documentary as a proof of Korean dating life being "sooo weiiird".

@@sslvsme5763 though entire population getting extinct is a theory, I also know that in reality reproduction follows situations. Right now we're overcrowded and overpopulated and this means we need to reduce births. In fact it's so hard to raise a baby these days... Fast forward when South Korea reaches a population of say 5 million people and the space and conditions for giving birth will be enticing and people start getting 3 to 5 kids... And the cycle continue... It's like a graph. The graph follow situations. Definitely there's nothing like eternal growth of anything on Earth. Lol

i wrote a research paper about south korea and i learned this while choosing topics to learn about. super interesting since in america we're having too many children. baby boomers are on the brink of retiring and left us with a lot of debt, everything costs a lot more, living expenses are more than our wages. yet in south korean there just aren't enough kids being born, families literally get checks as a congratulations for having a baby. the more children u have the more money u get, they don't want financial reasons to stop couples from having children.

My husband, who is Korean, and I had our pre-wedding photos done here in Korea back in October! It was such a fun experience (an 8 hour day!) and the photos came out beautifully. In fact, I've never seen a Korean pre-wedding photoshoot come out poorly. It would be quite awkward to have these kinds of photos done with someone who wasn't your intended though since you're in intimate poses a majority of the time. Also, we went to Jeju for our honeymoon! It was beautiful even in the winter.

+nismofury I am not sure if a lack of money actually counts as a reasons for a decreasing birthrate. Back in the days people had much more children, although the average wage rate and wealth was significantly lower (for ex.: between 1870-1900, a german woman gave birth to an average of 4,8 children, in the 1920s 3,5 and the 1960s 2,1; while today we have a birthrate of just over 1,5 children per woman). And yes, you are right, we don't have enough time, since both men and women are working now a days. But we might also hesitate to sacrifice our idealized freedom, personal goals and careers to raise a large number of children, who inevitably will keep you busy for the rest of your active life.
@MHKing03
@MHKing03 8 жыл бұрын
+nismofury Very true. +Massimiliano Audretsch Also, the variety and availability of contraceptives, higher education rates, and general economic development all contribute to decrease the birth rate. People have more options to have sex without pregnancy, more knowledge about family planning, and more hobbies and things to do. Before those things, people had a rudimentary understanding of reproduction and contraception, fewer options for hobbies/distractions, and less health care/higher mortality rates in general, so having more children was necessary to carry on family lines.

Yes! We lived in Korea for 3 years and while me and my husband are American, we had many Korean friends. They were really struggling on how to get married and have kids (especially the females). The social evolution hasn't followed the economic growth so a lot of them couldn't reconcile having a job and a husband and child at the same time. Even some of our highly educated friends seemed to somewhat cling to the idea that once you're married and have a kid that is your life, you don't really go back to work unless you absolutely have to. And of course, if you did go back to work, like you said, the work environment is so competitive, how could you possibly be up for any promotions or be looked at positively when you are always leaving for your child or having to go home. There is a lot of pressure to get married and start a family and a lot of pressure to stay in your job, do well, and get promoted, but few ways to reconcile the two.

Why's he gotta act creeped out so much. Loveland is kind of a "giggly" place and that wedding shoot wasn't that "weird". He gets his hair done and he's "stiff". This feels really forced to make it seem like some alien world. Even the music tried to emphasize a gravity of a situation brooding but it came off super tacky. I mean you can find the same equivalent in SF Mission District and NYC in West Village and the Sex Museum.

I know the reason Japans birthrate is declining is due to the pressure to succeed in school and work, why would you want to have sex or make a baby if you're stressed almost to the point of breaking as it is?

Also porn is ruining the experience of sex. People expect too much from their partners and Japanese guys are getting married to pillows and video game characters now adays too

Farid Jalil I'm not going to deny that porn doesn't have a bit of an effect but talk to any Japanese person and most of the time they'll tell you it's too much of a hassle to for them to start a family. I have several online friends from japan that I have been talking to for several years and they tell me how hard Japanese life is.

morrius07 First off i dont think they realize how much porn is a problem, since we are constantly brainwashed it is healthy, since sex is healthy. But porn isn't sex. And you can have sex without starting a family... But noone has the drive for it. Dopamine desensitization is the biggest culprit IMO.
@morrius0701
@morrius0701 9 жыл бұрын
NecKClippA well most credible sources would agree with me but like I said up top to the other guy porn does have an effect but it may just be me but it seams as though you're demonizing porn. porn isn't a very accurate depiction of sex but if porn has been around ever since cavemen learned to draw on walls. if porn is the main culprit than wouldn't every country be in danger? and if you really think about it japan may be hurting now but it is an example of what the rest of the world needs to do and that is to lower the population.

Some of this is heartbreaking.. I personally feel that prostitution (if it is between 2 CONSENTING adults) is not necessarily "evil" or "a crime" but even so... knowing that some of these women (or men as well??) are selling sex for 5$ is just unbelievable. These people must be desperate for money and have no where else to turn.. It's very sad to see these poor ahjimma's out there doing this.
@Shmaples

***** I don't think you can contribute all of those things solely to Prostitution. I don't think it's right for the government to control what people do with their bodies.. Yes bad things come from prostitution and no I don't think prostitution is lovely or good.. but I just see it as a fundamental right of a human.. They want to get paid for having sex.. they should be able too. If we let the government decide everything that they might have a future concern about, then there would be a lot of things outlawed.. Should we outlaw cars bc the government is concerned for the future of those who might get killed in a car accident? Should we outlaw skimpy clothes bc the government is concerned for future rape that might occur? ect...

The only reason some people do not get the resources and food they need is purely because of greed.

if i look at (or draw a picture of) a group of naked women with their legs open, i'm not expressing my sexuality, i'm just looking at a scene. a lewd image itself is not an expression of sexuality. public displays of affection might be expressing your sexuality- depending on how "affectionate" the act... a simple hug, for example, does not imply sexuality. also porn isn't the issue in this video. it's basically about south korean youth having premarital sex. they feel ashamed of it because of their strict culture and family. however, premarital sex is not a crime- though it is frowned upon... also the crime is making porn- the koreans are free to watch it.

The fact that the elderly are also now working in the sex industry in Korea is crazy. Because in South Korea the society there focus's more upon the elderly than the younger generation because they are supposed to set a good example and to be role models. Where as in the West and European countries they focus more on the younger generations, because they are the new hope and to give more to the world.

And I was told to go up to her and stroke her cheek with my hand but not just that I was also smearing white face paint onto her face at the same time to symbolise her growing rebellious behaviour and the her peers have on her and I could not stop laughing. Like I would reach over to do this one scene and just crack up at how serious everyone was trying to be it was so cringe I could not stop my laughter.

Come visit Vancouver in Canada, where about 30% of the population are asian, and half of the young ones are expat students trying to find a new life away from the congested Asian cities they come from (If you don't believe me, look at any youtube video filmed in Vancouver and see how right I am). One of the first things you see happen, is how fast they begin dating, having sex, and getting married at a super young age before going back so that their parents can not keep them apart again. About half of those expat students also end up looking for a way NOT to go back and end up staying in Canada, where life is not only less congested, but where it also lets people be relatively free. It also happens to be the North American city with the most mixed race of white-asian couples, and thereby children, in the world.

Except think about what happens when you are an industrialized trading nation now burdened with a lowered population yet still obligated (if not forced) to produce just as much as you did before. Think about if the bread-basket countries stopped having the workers necessary to cultivate wheat at the rate they did in years past: you'd starve the world inside of 10 years, if we didn't kill each other off trying to obtain hoarded food for individual populations.

As a Korean, I'm offended by the comments (rude much?) and the guy in the video. Vice always picks journalists that make everything seem so bad... It's not bad that the birth rate decreased, humans are overpopulated anyway. But that doesn't mean u have to diss the country. Eventually the birth rate in Korea will increase, have u seen the culture there?!? Romance is everything... Literally, there's clothes dedicated to couples to have matching clothes, even underwear and socks... And the songs and KDRAMA's have something to do with love or falling in love. And the media has a big impact on the young and old in Korea. Drama and kpop is everything, it's gonna affect the people somehow... Seriously, I wish vice would think outside the box 4 once and think about their content.

ALSO in China, Europeans and Americans were all like EW CHINA'S SO CRUEL TO ANIMALS - and IGNORED all the CHINESE PEOPLE campaigning AGAINST animal cruelty.
