The St. Louis Cardinals are coming off the heels of their worst finish since 1990. Because of this, they have been very active in free agency acquiring Lance Lynn, Kyle Gibson, and Sonny Gray.

All Cards fans know that this can't be it? If Mo sticks with these three and packs for winter, it will be another long season. Gray, Gibson and Lynn will not cut it. Cardinals have not been aggressive in Mozeliak's tenure. Maybe DeWitt is too cheap? Anyway, they need to go big or go home.

@@3-0GreenlightBro, he just finished 2nd in Cy Young voting behind the best SP in MLB right now. What more do you want from an ace? Sure, he might not be an ace in 2026-27, but he's shown a lot of consistency over the past few years, unlike Blake Snell (as an example). He's an ace going into 2024, plain and simple. You can definitely say that STL doesn't have a sufficiently good #2 starter right now, but Gray deserves that #1 spot.

Go look at Wainos FIP compared to Lynn’s last year, you’ll see Waino was hardly worse, which shows that Lynn would have struggle even more on this team last year, and nobody before last year would have thought Flaherty going into the season would be worse than Lynn, or Gibson this year, so yeah if we gain anything it’s minimal at best, now of course Lynn and Gibson could have decent seasons, but it’s certainly not adding 10 wins, maybe 3 to 5 wins combined, and that’s not factoring in Mikolas is a year older, Matz sucks, and Gray while a very good #2 has averaged like 135 innings the last 3 years, there is no guarantee he pitches 170+ innings. The rotation is garbage, and should they luck out and make the playoffs with these guys, only Gray is even capable of starting a playoff game, the rest I wouldn’t trust with 2 innings in the playoffs, they are all has beens and Matz and Gibson were never anything better than average anyway, and all but Gray are way past their prime, and you could even make a case Gray could start declining if not this year next year, Mo sucks. He should have been fired long ago, he won in 2011 on a Jocketty built team, and hasn’t done shit since!

The players they got pitch innings, quality innings, Gibson and gray both had quality start rates over 50 percent last season. If Gibson Lynn gray and Mikolas were all on the squad last season, they would have combined got 80+ games with 6 plus innings. LAST SEASON, A TERRIBLE SEASON the cardinals had a .583 WINNING PERCENTAGE when there pitchers pitched 6 innings. All we need is these pitchers to go deeper into games than our pitchers did last season.

Well Yamamoto is going to get 300 plus as of now. Also the Rays got a much better return for Glasnow than what the Cards offered (assuming they made an offer). Right now the only other moves that were realistic were Lugo and Wacha and both are now signed. But then were getting into retirement aged players again with Lugo and Wacha. Thats without even addressing the bullpen that blew 22 plus games last year. Right now their season ceiling is 85 wins.

Being a cardinal fan I u set stand the frustration to really go after it. With the amount of cash that came off their books after last year led to hopes that money would be allocated to difference makers that would bring us back to relevance rather then mediocre or bounce back candidates. Most cardinal fans saw roughly 60-70 million to fill the rotation. In need of 2-4 starters with atleast one needed if you be a TOR arm. They grabbed that TOR arm in gray to pair with a reasonable 3-4 ish spot in mikolas. they have reasonable pieces that are capable of producing around average numbers for a typical bottom of the rotation, guys like Thompson, liberatore, and some recently acquired prospects (robberse, kloff, rom) or guys that did enough at AAA to be worthy of a shot to crack the rotation (graceffo, mcgreevy) Then another high upside that aren’t quite as far along (hence, roby). A couple other arms that aren’t to far along from deserving a shot. So some felt we could go grab another top guy to go with gray and mikolas and let the battle for the other 2 spots get decided. I don’t think we cheaper out. I’m fact the money comes to be pretty equal had it been gray + Yama rather then the gray, Gibson, Lynn. I think it was the fear of signing a pitcher long term to high dollar no matter who it was. They were comfortable with the term for gray and then just the year commitment elsewhere. The problem was risking money into a future that they seem to be comfortable with the quality talent and depth they have in the arms department. They believe that in the next 1-2 years they will know more about what they need and what they have. Rather then completely blocking these future arms they stuck to a short term rotation that will need 2 spots filled next year (Lynn, Gibson) 2 the next (mikolas, matz) and then the 5th (gray) the following year as they funnel in Hence, Roby, hjerpe, graceffo, mcgreevy, and back up options (kloffenstein, robberse, bedell, Hansen, rajcic, mautz, showalter, Mathews) Now 3 years down the road you got your young rotation and a better idea of if you need to spend high dollar to something you may not have needed. Sure we have been spoiled and see that if we don’t get a top pitcher we’re don’t have a good chance. But in reality with another good starter isn’t pushing us to the top and patience is the better play here. Even though we had the money to go get two top guys and probably be better right now, it would bleed into the future allocated money which we have done reasonably well of having cleared the future books to go along with talented players on pre arb or early arb contracts. Be patient for 1or 2 years. realistically we have some exciting youth, let it play out and what you have in a few years could be extremely special.

Besides what @3-0Greenlight said, Glasnow is very injury-prone. 2023 was the first season in his career that he pitched more than 100 innings. His value per inning is excellent, but he's not likely to provide much total value because of his low availability. Considering that and his high salary for 2024, I'll be surprised if the Rays can get much back for him on the trade market without eating a lot of his salary (which I doubt they'll do).

As of today our reality remains no contender in 2024. Goldschmidt is washed up offensively and Arenado looks to be on the slippery slope downward also. Victor Scott today looks very misplaced as an MLB anything. We cannot stop the steal , regardless of which catcher is in. I'll give this team 79 wins this year as long as defensively we stay healthy. Blessing in disguised may be Goldschmidt find the DL and Burleson turns out to be a real good fielder and real good hitter. Im not at all confident Jordan Walker is ready for MLB pitching nor am I confident Scott is either.

We should have extended Montgomery while we had the chance, we are so cheap except when it comes to overpaying aging players. Let's see what they shell out to Goldschmidt. Truth is even if we add another good starter we need at least 2 good bullpen arms and our offense is still inconsistent, so to mse we still wouldn't be a world series contender, look at how we fizzled out in Pujols and Molinas final year. This team is not close to that one in my opinion.

It really seems like STL and many other baseball teams are worried about the collapse of Bally Sports and its effect on revenue. It's fun to play armchair GM and pretend you have unlimited cash to spend, but Mo works in the real world. Big market teams like LA (both), NY (both), SFG, BOS, TEX, HOU, TOR, and yes, even CHC are willing and able to spend ridiculous amounts of money to acquire the best players, and DeWitt wants the team to turn a profit every year. Contreras just got the biggest contract that STL has ever given to a player who's never played for the Cardinals before, and that was just ~$87 million. It is smart for where they are at. People are looking at the problem the wrong way. The problem isn't not spending on big name pitchers. Look at how that turned out last year, and often turns out in general. The problem is the Cardinals struggle to develop their own pitching. Until they do, the best you can do is this yearly patchwork system they've had for years. You can blame Mo for not addressing the rotation at all last year, and not extending Montgomery when he was open to it last off-season and could have gotten a tram friendly deal. The Sonny Gray contract is great though, one of the best in baseball. The value he extracted from the trades last year was also excellent, completely rejuvenated a bad farm system. I'd like to see them go after one more guy in a trade, someone like Alek Manoah. Wouldn't cost much to get and could be a high value asset if he turns things around.

Cardinals can't outbid either NY team or LA or Boston for Yamamoto. Glassnow is very injury prone. Lance Lynn will be better than Wainwright in 2024. Gibson will Gibson. The Cardinals waived the white flag in July and just let minor leaguers get playing time. I personally think the Cardinals are a.500 team right now. This before unloading Matz, O'Neil, Carlson, or any infield depth. It's easy to be an armchair GM. The Cardinals supposedly offered Nola 6 years 162 million. He chose Philadelphia.

@@MrDarkart82Exactly. The off-season alternative presented in the video had the Cards going WAAAAY over budget even if Yamamoto settled for $225 million (he'll get more). Either that, or they'd just completely neglect their bullpen and trade away a bit too much major league talent to be able to afford Yamamoto and Glasnow (a.k.a. "Broken Later"; h/t Brendan Schaeffer). Besides, it's pretty clear that Nola wasn't leaving Philly as long as they offered him a satisfactory contract. When Mo signed both Lynn and Gibson, I was initially disappointed. However, I'm now convinced that they make sense because they consistently pitch deep into games while giving up a max of 3-4 runs. That's how Gibson got 15 wins despite his unimpressive ERA. Lynn has said he's already reworking his pitch arsenal in the off-season to address the HR problem, and pitching in Busch Stadium will help keep more of those fly balls in the park. They still don't have a sufficient #2 starter, but if they can't get a guy now, they can make it to July with around a .500 winning percentage and then trade for a SP or two like they did in '21 and '22 to make the playoffs.
