You need a careful combo of heartfelt respect and massive talent to take Charlie's seat behind the kit for the Stones. Nobody else but Steve Jordan could do it. And with style.
Only Inside Blackbird can have these kinds of insider conversations. See more of our exclusive episode with Steve Jones at:

An in-depth conversation with legendary drummer, producer, music director, and songwriter Steve Jordan; who has been making records for 50 years. Steve was a no brainer to fill Charlie's drum chair. Not only because of his long association and friendship with The Stones, Charlie, etc, but he is a musician's musician, who PLAYS FOR THE SONG and that shows in this interview. And btw, he has one of the best grooves and sounds in the business

Steve Jordan is definitely the right choice to take over from Charlie, he's a great drummer, and he has the right attitude and respect for what went before.

Saw the Stones last night in Cleveland with Steve on drums. He was on fire!!! Authentic to Charlie’s drum hooks and groove for days. They sounded so good! I was astounded. I took my 76 year old mom to see them and she said it was one of the best nights of her life!

Steve and Charlie both have amazing feel and groove. Couldn’t be a better drummer to do the music justice. Plus they were friends.

I have nothing but deep admiration for Steve. Stepping up to the job of filling Charlies seat is not easy as it goes.He kept some of the things that charlie made the songs with and of course it going to sound like himself because every player has their own personality. i dont compare players ,i just know that its still sounds great ,different ,but great !. Steve is a really good drummer and fills charlies seat with honour.

Truly awesome drummer. I don't know who else could have replaced Watts so effectively. Maybe Kenny Aronoff?

As a semi-retired drummer of 40+ years I understand what Steve Jordan is talking about. I learn a lot from watching Charlie playing live on DVDs concert videos. I also learned his one off the hi-hat which a lot of drummers still don't understand. I do it makes the music move and swing. I love it. I still sit in on a few songs with a local band. Keeps my chops up. Keep on Rocking with the Stones Steve Jordan.

I miss the china/crash cymbal Charlie used above his hi-hats. That's my favorite sound.

Steve Jordan is the most knowledgeable cat regarding any kind of music.. I played drums with Bennie Maupin.. he received life time achievement award..Steve was also the MD on that gig..I had the honor to play Steve's kit that he bought that Shelly Mann played on the movie soundtrack Peter Gun.. he collects all these wonderful nostalgia kits, coincidentally so did Charlie Watts, so they definitely had a common bond on how they thought about things.. Steve a very very nice cat🙏🏼 really down to earth.. we had great conversation and dailog about vintage drums, he's my man! I enjoy reading any interviews that he gives, they're informative...... I'm always encouraged by his interviews.. Thank you for allowing me to share.. K Sara 🪘

Excellent drummer with an impressive list of all the musicians he played with! Very solid and expressive at the same time. Listen to his work live as a member of the John Mayer trio (with Pino Palladino).

whata fckng consummate professional Steve is ; thats why without hesitation, since the '80s , was always 1st choice of substitute percussion for Keith, even for expensive winos or his solo work , always Steve Jordan on drums if he couldn't have Charlie.... Here , you see part if the rrason why .

Chemistry is sometimes just a slight nuance that carrys the feel of a song, not just the melody. The drums are like a cradle that rocks the instrimental baby. Folks say the base, drums & piano play off each other & I agree, because I can feel the difference, but when rhythm players change the song does to & I always have to be aware of what the lead player may change in his licks. It's fare to say we all play off each other in different ways, including the singers. While playing & singing Kansas City I felt the need for harmony in the chorus where there was none & it didn't follow the up & down modulation or the soul singing original. The chemistry of those players brought that feel. A lead might have a Rumba influence that I find myself complimenting. The Rythme might have more of a Blues Influence. The bass might have a funk Influence, all so slight, but enough to change the feel of an unmistakable melody. Some say that feel comes from a distinction that genre's bring, & again I agree, but there's also personal blue prints within the genre. Everything we've ever heard, even outside of music plays a part in how we wind up playing it. Ray Manserak heard rain in his piano lick for Riders on the storm. Eddie Rabbit heard windshield wipers in his guitar for Driving my life away. Ginger Baker & Gene Kruper were both attracted to the tone & cadence of African percusion. We have an attic of muscle memories just waiting to compliment anothers or drive them depending upon the collective soul of all contributors, when we just close our eyes & feel the vibrations.

He is a good guy. Have a good approach I think. Then again. I lived a whole life as musician. Yet not met a drummer that was so wise as Charlie Watts was. He simplified for the benefits of the stage performance. The most scary part was some of the drummers having much more social credibility than me, downgraded Charlie and rather wanted a stereotype kind of drumming with lesser nuances and fewer dynamics in volume. Charlie was uniq. It’s not easy to take his chair

71-75... I agree, Stones were GREAT... but..."Get yer ya-ya's out"... What are they talking about!? That's a live album from the 1969-tour! I don't think it's that hard to know such things...

Steve says they were on fire from 1971 to 1975.. Then this guy says. "Get Yer Ya Ya's Out"....HELLO MaCFLY,,anybody home? But both are wrong...They were on fore live from 1969 to 1977..Jordan fails to recognize the live El Mocambo gig March of 1977.Talk about being on fire..Thats was above and beyond on fire... Still some great tours after...But these years were the highpoint...NO CHARLIE NO MORE STONES

Read all of the comments and agree/disagree. I've been a drummer for 42 years. Steve and Charlie are not only two completely different drummers, they are two completely different people. I simply can't understand why a 66 year old man would dress and act like a 19 year old thug and gang banger with his hat sideways, sunglasses, chains, etc. etc. WTF is the point Steve ??? As a lifelong musician I understand "artistic expression" and all that bullshit, but did you ever see Charlie like that ?????? The answer is "NO, NEVER". Charlie was the consumate class act, with hand made tailored suits and he never "acted the part" of a supposed 'rock star', 'musician', 'celebrity', whatever word you want to plug in. Just be a "guy who plays drums" Steve, and do your job without your race or any of that bullshit playing into it. You understand? You get it? My guess is not - you will never have the humility and style of Charlie Watts until you learn to dress, act and behave the way he did.
