I'd prefer a 2 level dip into tempest cleric, it gets you the same armour & Weapon proficiencies as Fighter but doesn't slow your spell slot progression as much. it will slow your spells gained by 2 levels but you do get the channel divinity which I feel evens it out, making that transmuted lightning fireball hit that much harder at the start of combat can't be a bad thing.

A popular choice and one I definitely considered. Ultimately the extra level and worse stats swayed me towards the fighter but I do envy that max damage blast!

I assumed he would've taken paladin. Given the character has the str for heavy armor and cha for sorcerer so they already meet the multiclassing requirements. And 2 levels counts as 1 level of Caster, plus if we quicken a spell, we could still attack and smite

Tempest Cleric6/Storm Sorc6. Heavy armor, Max lit/thund dmg 2/short rest, push large or smaller creatures 10ft EVERY time you deal lit dmg. Transmute metamagic opens the door for all kinds of fun. Make an Acid Sphere lightning and push a group twice. I unhorsed 6 riders with a lightning scorching ray.

I forget his name, Robilliard maybe? But he was a wizard in the Drizzt novels. He'd sit in a chair and use his ring of gusts to propel their pirate hunting ship. He used fireballs to create steam screens too. Magic used indirectly with creative effects is the best.

My StormKnight variation is currently a 6th lvl Eldritch Knight Fighter/4th lvl Storm Sorcerer. Extra attack, and a Quickened Shocking Grasp or Lightning Lure to bring that one enemy close. Looking forward to 5th lvl Sorcerer, for two spells; Haste and Thunderstep. And yes, I use Transmute spell Metamagic a lot, It's a fun build.

My last comment was one year ago! I believe an update is needed on my behalf! I played 2 characters ever since with the same idea as yours! The first one is a melee base frontline: 6 levels in Tempest cleric( Destructive Wrath & Thunderbolt Strike) 1 level Hexblade Warlock 13 Storm Sorcerer. Here I play as Gish mostly, throwing destructive spells around, activating Destructive Wrath on crits, Quickened Spell (insert your favorite spells) then hitting the nearest enemy with Booming Blade(Lightning) pushing them away 10ft while you got to move around another 10ft....you get the picture xD The Second one was more Caster-oriented, mid or backline: 2 levels in Tempest Cleric and the rest in Storm Sorcerer, throwing Lightning spells left and right, Fireball? how about Lightning Ball? Either character it was great fun and very satisfying ;D Thank you once again!

I’ve gotten a lot of good milage out of Storm Sorcery in a touch attack build, so definitely recommend a dip into Sorcerer for Storm Sorcery. Have you considered an Armorer Artificer Genie Warlock with dips into Storm Sorcerer and Tempest Cleric? Going Stealth Armor nets a lightning attack that always available and uses your Int for attack and damage. Go Mark of Warding Dwarf for +2 Con, +1 Int, plus a number of good spells added to your list. You would skate around soundlessly on the air in heavy plate while blasting away with lightning and thunder attacks.

This is a sick build. Always thought heavy armor mages was a cool concept, Caranthir from the Witcher 3 really sealed the deal for me, he's SO cool. Always loved the storm theme too, more interesting than fire. embracing the wind and thunder side of that is a creative way to add a lot of utility while staying on theme with flavor. One thing worth considering for people using this, just ask your DM if you can permanently reflavor 1 or 2 or 3 spells like firebolt, fireball, cone of cold, maybe even shadow blade to lightning. Maybe will need to tweak damage down some, but that would open up a lot of cool possibilities. I think I'm going to use this as my next character.

There’s a lot of potential starting with 2 levels in paladin imo!! You still get the heavy armor and shield combo of you so wish, but you also get some healing utility (I always consider it a defibrillator) and SMITES!! I’d you booming blade as a cantrip you can smite on it then quicken thunderstep or thunderwave to clear out. By level 7 transmute Ashardalons Stride or haste yourself and go o f f

Battle mages like this is what I live for, Anything where you can recreate a Magus in Pathfinder. The dip and level contribution from fighter is something that I never considered. I’ve done the popular choice of cleric and using “Channel Divinity: Destructive Wrath.” I just finished a one of on your Con Rune Knight Fighter and it was hella fun. Do you have any builds where you maximize the amount of health and resistances from Druid barbarian? Raging and health sinks. If not I suggest you look into it. It’s a lot of fun raging as a bear.

This is a great idea! I will probably make something similar but with a Mountain Dwarf. Flavor wise I think Dwarfs are great for storm related stuff and mechanically I will get medium armor proficiency from the race. If I see that speed is an issue I could grab the Mobile feat at 4th level.

Frontline storm sorcerer is the build I’m playing now! But I mixed it with genie warlock for medium armor proficiency. That plus shield spell have been good enough. I focused more on the wind element with repelling blast…I have to say, this is the most enjoyable spellcaster I’ve played. Fighting alongside the paladin at the front is cool. My only problem is that Multiclassing really slows down the spell progression. So I’m still waiting on thunder step, which I agree will be an ideal spell for the build.

I might go eldritch knight fighter for Booming Blade just because hitting an enemy with it and then doing a Thunderwave to shove them to activate the booming blade damage sounds fun. Booming blade also comes handy if you want to Thunderstep away as it forces the enemy to chase you since you’ve created distance between you both. The transmute spell meta magic would definitely help a lot with spells that effect different areas. That’s if your DM doesn’t give you a boon/homebrew where all of your spells doing thunder or lightning damage.

Chaos Bolt, Chromatic Orb, Thunderwave, Witch Bolt (ewwwww), Dragon's Breath, Shatter, Lightning Bolt, Thunder Step, Storm Sphere. Nine spells that activate your features, unless you spend your few and precious Sorcerer Points to change it. If there was even moderate spell support for this subclass, it would be a much more popular option. If there was even a single built in feature to support melee (since the features seem to encourage it), it would be a much more popular option. This subclass feels like a great idea that just never got integrated.

I am currently playing an astral monk in a wild magic campaign where death is honestly always a serious threat so I have been blueprinting backup characters and one thought I had was a kuo-toa of some fashion styled after a combination of fish species. I always told myself that if I lost my monk I'd go all in on magic for my backup and had considered a betta/dunkleosteus combo as a paladin archetype of martial and magic, but why not throw in electric eel as well and reflavor this build for bioelectric betta shenanigans? The concept of the kuo-toa generating his own magical beliefs out of pure self confidence is what I love the most so I can go any direction, but this is sooooo tempting.

This doesn't really have anything to do with Storm Sorcery specifically, but I feel like there should be an Oath of Storms for that whole Storm Knight-type character. Thor has always felt more like a Paladin to me, being more martial focused, so Storm Sorcerer and Tempest Cleric haven't really felt like it really fit that aesthetic for me. I dabbled in homebrewing for one, and I think it's got some potential. A Paladin with spells like Absorb Elements, Thunderwave, Thunder Step, Control Water, and Maelstrom would be pretty fun.

I'd person use paladin for this as they pare well with sorcerer already, and using booming blade is perfectly within the theme of this build, and means enemies will think twice about chasing you. Additionally, once you get extra attack you can use booming blade as a bonus action for even more damage. Additionally, paladin still serves to progress your spell slots making it a great pairing. Of course I'd advise putting points into strength, or dipping further into warlock for hexblade features.

This is a fun build, but I'd change two things. The first would be Mountain Dwarf to give me Medium Armor. The second would be go Evocation Wizard instead of fighter. As a blaster tank with high mobility, i rather prefer the ability to PBAoE the groups without affecting myself and my allies, and then moving out. Take Tough for the additional HP and go from there.
@eacaraxe
@eacaraxe Жыл бұрын
If you're going that route, it's better to ditch storm sorcerer entirely and go either tempest cleric or evoker with a two-level dip in the other. I'd personally go tempest X/evo 2, but that's just me. Being a dwarf lets you dump str while wearing heavy armor without penalty, and you still get the cornerstone abilities of either class: channel divinity and sculpt spell. Tasha's custom origin rules lets you start with a 17 Int or Wis, 13 in the other to meet multiclass prereqs, and your 17 Con because mountain dwarves get +2/+2. From there, all you need is metamagic adept to transmute and maximize any elemental damage spell in the game, without harming allies.
@seanjaskowiak3407
@seanjaskowiak3407 Жыл бұрын
@@eacaraxe Yours isn't a bad build, but it adjusts from the Blaster aspect. Storm Sorc allows for damage every casting while Tempest requires your use of either a Reaction or your Channel Divinity. One is resource intensive and the other isn't. From an attribute sense, this combination plays out well, but Clerics are meant to be more tanky than Blasters and less mobile, which the original build is based on. It's a totally different play style matching two very unique build styles.
@eacaraxe
@eacaraxe Жыл бұрын
@@seanjaskowiak3407 Heart of the Storm only triggers upon casting a leveled spell that deals lightning or thunder damage, so it's not damage on every cast. It's a trivial amount of damage that scales poorly, especially for the resource cost and having to be in reach attack range. Spirit Guardians alone has comparable damage, with better resource efficiency and much greater impact on action economy. THEN you can start doing cheeky stuff, like dropping grease in your SG range and lightning luring/V-warping enemies into it, or mind slivering to nerf saves against grease or SG. Gets even funnier once you have war caster, and you're luring or slivering as your opportunity attack should enemies TRY to get away. Which addresses the bigger point: "blaster" is a poor character concept around which to build. Yeah, casters can nova, but at the end of the day you HAVE to have utility and control options to shine, especially if those control options synergize with the damage you're already doing. As far as mobility, "skirmishing" is incredibly overrated, even suboptimal to the point of not recommendable. Tabletop Builds has an article with the requisite math demonstrating this. Casters are always better off relying on chokepoint/killbox tactics with control spells. But if you must, Longstrider is a first-level spell that matches tempestuous magic's bonus movement, and doesn't require concentration or casting a leveled spell every round.
@seanjaskowiak3407
@seanjaskowiak3407 Жыл бұрын
@eacaraxe I'm not disagreeing with you. Cleric is generally a better all-around class, but it isn't the purpose of the video, which is Storm Sorcerer and blaster. Thus, I worked under those guidelines. If we were doing an actual "Lightning Tank," tempest cleric would be a necessity, but we aren't. We are doing a mobile, lightning based, skirmisher. It's a different concept entirely.
@eacaraxe
@eacaraxe Жыл бұрын
@@seanjaskowiak3407 The build presented isn't as you describe it, though. It's a frontline build with mobility options for repositioning, not "skirmishing". Otherwise, there's no point to building for AC, and you'll be far more successful leaning into races with mobility options that CAN end a turn outside monsters' engagement ranges -- one of the winged races, centaur, tabaxi, or even harengon would be preferable. Harengon would actually be fantastic for this sort of thing; PB to initiative, and bunny hop is straight superior to tempestuous magic. Instead, you're going for mountain dwarf, which has a single racial mobility option you're not even using, and a base speed of 25...to get medium armor proficiency for free. It's the worst of all possible worlds; you won't have enough AC to be sufficiently defensive, not enough mobility to actually "skirmish", and as a consequence you'll bleed first-level slots (and sorcery points) from having to shield practically every combat round, limiting damage options. Under those circumstances, you're actually better off forgetting evoker and sculpt spell, and going with bladesinger...at which point mountain dwarf isn't the preferable dwarven lineage choice, hill dwarf is. With that build, mountain dwarves' racial armor proficiencies have no value but hill dwarves' extra HP will. If you're picking mountain dwarf, you need to lean into what the race actually has to offer to be effective, and that means building a "lightning tank". This is a case example of why "skirmisher" is a fake role, because trying to build for anything means you build for nothing. You either build for frontline, or ranged.
