The Story of Brian Pillman in ECW

"The Loose Cannon" Brian Pillman was a true breakthrough character and gimmick in professional wrestling. When "Flyin'" Brian Pillman joined The Four Horsemen in WCW, his demeanour and attitude slowly changed into an unhinged loose cannon that Arn Anderson had trouble keeping under control. What we didn't know is that Brian Pillman and Eric Bischoff had been talking behind the scenes about letting this "Loose Cannon" character go to other wrestling organizations; the end goal being the eventual WCW return of Brian Pillman.
Brian Pillman showed up in ECW in February of 1996 while still under contract with WCW. Pillman would make appearances in both companies the following month, the plan here being to keep Brian as a member of the Horsemen while feuding with Shane Douglas in Extreme Championship Wrestling. In the end, Brian wouldn't return to WCW when his ECW run came to an end, instead deciding to sign with the WWF after his car accident.
This video takes a look at Brian Pillman's transformation into the Loose Cannon gimmick, the infamous kayfabe-breaking "I Respect You, Booker Man" incident with Kevin Sullivan, and Brian's short but eventful run in ECW.

ECW suited many guys. It marked the beginning of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Raven's character thrived in ECW, Rob Van Dam's and Sabu's crazy styles couldn't have been presented the way they were elsewhere, The Dudley Boyz' over the top heel antics would never been allowed in WWF or WCW, and the list goes on and on.

When Shane Douglas and the entire ECW crew hit the ring to prevent Pillman from "urinating" in the ring, you can actually hear Shane saying "he's shooting, he's shooting". After that you see Paul E taking him aside probably telling him no it's fine. So much great work (no pun intended) there.

Brian Pillman was 20 years ahead of his time. You can see his influence in Moxley and Sammy Guevara to name a few. I thought he was legitimately crazy. He would've been huge today. He will always be one of my favorite wrestlers ever.

I remember all of this growing up. I'm 41 years old now and I remember when all of this happened I looked up to Brian pillman ever since he was flying Brian pillman and I talked about his Cincinnati Bengals background you know he was always like The optimist and then when you saw him as this loose Cannon character after you saw him as playing the leave it to Beaver white meat good guy you couldn't help but look up to him and you know what he definitely was ahead of his time and you know what he was Heath ledger's joker before Heath ledger was if you know what I mean

And Moxley fails it at, Pillman came off as a legitimate lunatic with control, whereas Moxley just comes off as some hyped up jock coming off his 3rd can of Red Bull or White Claw.

Pillman will always be a legend. Wonder what Pillman vs Dean Ambrose would be like? Hope he finally gets inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame, as part of The Hart Foundation (1997 version). Had to see this video, as I couldn't figure out how you got a 20-minute video when Pillman was only in ECW for a few months.

Never understood the hype behind Brian Pillman and then I realized I only knew him from his late WWF run, after his work in WCW/ECW. Years later I realized he was one of the trailblazers for the Attitude era and everything I love about Dean Ambrose/ Jon Moxley is literally Pillman.

Every time I see anything involving the Flair/Arn/Pillman/Benoit Horsemen lineup I get depressed. The potential there could have made it the best 4H lineup of all time.

Looking back after all these years it's plain to see now, Brian Pillman was the start of the Attitude Era in not only WWF, but pro wrestling as a whole. Big shame he didn't get to ride that wave out, just think he probably would've took Stone Cold Steve Austin's place as the face of that era had the crash not happened & Brian came into WWF when it was originally planned..... 🤔

Pillman was so good. I’m glad you did this video. I watched all this as it happened, and he had every fan guessing it was a shoot. I watched his entire career, and he was an amazing talent. The Hollywood Blondes were the best tag team WCW had in the early 90s, and his loose cannon phase was brilliant. I was so sad when he passed. We miss you Brian Pillman.....

I like to imagine an alternate reality where he ended becoming the main heel of the Attitude Era. Imagine him feuding with Stone Cold or trading insults with The Rock. We had to settle for Triple H instead. Reality sucks sometimes.

@@thejesman reason I said he would have been a mid Card ust because Vince would have kept him at min card. It looks like during his time in both WCW and ECW the leadership backstage did not know what he was going to do and Vince wanted full clarity what was he going to do with his character. Try pulling that same trick he did on Bobby Heenan on Jerry Lawler you going to get your ass kicked backstage.

I'll tell you what WB, this upload may go under the radar for most views but this for me is your best video, and I don't say that lightly at all Just imagine the Hollywood Blondes, the team WCW threw together because they didn't know what to do with them, completely become the talk of wrestling. In an alternate universe their is SCSA and the loose cannon Brian F'IN Pillman having the wrestlemania moment, (personally Pillman being the biggest heel and SCSA selling his soul to him at X7) Brian was the Kurt Cobain of wrestling, just something completely different that was irresistible to resist, a man who can fool his own piers/friends takes something in a business where everyone knows it. You have out done yourself with this one and proved yourself to be in his category of talent. Amongst a sea of choice of wrestling channels, you are definitely in the top 1 Great upload as always WB......Bang

The idea was potential genius. Pillman would have been pretty much an advertisement for WCW everywhere he went if that storyline played out. It was this kind of stealth way to inject a WCW storyline into the other promotions that WCW was competing with.

I'm not very familiar with the mid 90s wrestling scene as i began watching around 02. But when it comes to Pillman, especially during the Loose Cannon period, he reminded me very much of Kurt Cobain and I don't really know why, does anyone else feel this way?

Pillman wasn’t explaining what a “smart mark” was, he was mocking them further by saying “What’s a smart mark? A mark with a high IQ?”. He meant it as “You’re still marks. It doesn’t matter how smart you think you are”.

He was so good the fact that he was in the horseman and the hart foundation just explains how good he was if he didn't get into the accident he could off been as big as Stone Cold just because that Loose Cannon Gimmick would off worked in the attitude area plus him vs Shawn Michaels they would off had sick matches.

It was surreal seeing that 40 second "match" at Superbrawl VI between Pillman & Sullivan. Those strap shots by Brian were stiff AF & Sullivan's right hand to Pillman's jaw was def a real nasty punch
