In older version of Minecraft, there was this grayed out tutorial button. Did it ever do anything? Today, we'll find this out and more.

If the date on the video, "oct 30, 2010" is real, then it could be real, cause Xbox360Edition only came out in 9 May 2012. Or its just creepy how similar it is to the console version.

When i was younger, i never searched up recipes for some odd reason, i think my computer at the time was really bad. I wanted to make glass in minecraft but didn't know how, so i asked my mum how glass was made in real life, which lead to me trying to put sand in a furnace and it worked to my surprise.

I mean... it kinda doesn't. Everyone just checks the wiki until they understand or learns through osmosis. There's a really facinating playthrough here on YT by PiroPito, they genuinely knew nothing about the game and refused to look anything up. Like, the one hint they ever got was asking a friend if they were on the right track trying to lite Obsidian on fire, spent a couple hours trying out portal shapes. It does a good job of illustrating how much we assume people will figure out or just know.

Game design as a whole is pretty difficult. There is an art to it, and Minecraft somehow miraculously did it with ease back then. The player is never truly lost, sure they could be stumped at times, but never lost. The idea of a tutorial does break the idea of what Minecraft is about but the tutorial isn't about holding your hand the whole way, you still explore and learn things on your own. That's truly magical.

I remember when the addition of a crafting recipe book in the game itself was legit a controversial change. Good to see the weird aversion to making the game actually understandable to new players without relying on external material wasn't just a community thing, it was deep-rooted in the development of the game itself.
@LilacMonarch
@LilacMonarch Жыл бұрын
But honestly I think they did it really well. The recipe book doesn't spoil everything immediately since you have to do things to "unlock" recipes. For example it's possible to craft a boat before unlocking the recipe if you don't go near water.

I remember playing Minecraft for the first time and feeling utterly lost for over an hour, dying dozens of times during night cycles as I tried to figure out basic mechanics. The real sticking points for me were: a) How do I make light? b) How do I make food? I was able to figure out the tree punching and the crafting bench pretty early. I never tried punching stone, but I can imagine I might have been surprised to discover you couldn't punch stone. I would have guessed initially that a tool only made you better at punching. It took me a while to figure out not only did you need the tool to be efficient, you needed the tool period. I was able to guess at the recipe for a tool by playing around with sticks and planks (both of which are pretty obvious to make once you get wood). But I was not able to figure out quickly how to make a torch. I was guessing at the time I needed some sort of fire mechanism, but having not discovered flint I couldn't figure out how to make "fire" - presumed to be a necessary component. Nor had I found coal at that point, nor did I feel safe enough to try to go anywhere in the dark. I presumed that if I tried to hide in the dark in a hole, that I would be (and here I reveal my age) likely "eaten by a grue". I didn't realize monsters couldn't spawn close to you. So I tried essentially avoiding monsters, but this left me very hungry and it wasn't obvious how I got food. Once I got coal, and once I figured out a torch - which took at least an hour - things progressed pretty rapidly. A lot of things were discovered by accident as I tried to figure out what I could make. The bed recipe was intuitive once you got wool, for example. But wow did figuring out that torch recipe feel like something that needed to be explained to you.

In the beginning I never searched up recipes or tutorials. I just found out from friends at school and we would share recipes that way. I had a book in which I would write down recipes and I think I didn't even find out how to use a furnace to smelt iron until I already had like 50 hours in the game. I always thought iron ore was just an ugly stone. I remember watching a video on someone who had a very odd resource pack who put iron ore in the furnace so obviously I had to try it. First thing I built was a roller coaster as I saw it in a video, who needs iron tools amirite. I think not knowing the boundaries of the game made it feel less empty. I had plenty of fun with the limited items I had, knowing I had not explored everything yet or had found every item. But that was 11 years ago. Damn.

When I was a kid and saw that pe had just came out, it was massive at the time but of course it required me to buy minecraft again. But then I saw Minecraft Pocket Edition Lite just next to it a bit after launch. This was free Minecraft pe, and not one of those off spins that you find on the play store legitimate Minecraft PE but with a different name and certain restrictions on some things. The title screen was the same as normal pe, the version was the same and the gameplay was the same, but if I remember correctly there were limited blocks and mobs and worlds couldn’t be saved. If anyone else can get more info on this and even gameplay it would really mean a lot, it doesn’t exist now and feels as if it never existed.

i played the tutorial world because i have an xbox 360, and its amazing. i played on 2 versions, one that was shown in the video, and another that was unique. the unique one looked like i was in a castle, and to get out, i had to learn about minecraft mechanics and everything. after i got out, there were many demonstrations on redstone, villagers, the nether and the end. i dont remember how long ago that was, but thats all i remember.

Good to see I'm not the only 360 Minecraft enjoyer, it was pretty late for me to get into this version, but it's still very fun

oh definitely, Modern minecraft feels like the sense of wonder and mystery is somehow gone, its hard to describe but the old versions had this very specific feel fo it

I wish minecrap was still “crusty” and old feeling like voxel lighting, I always wanted more bosses, dungeons, dimension, weapons.

The need for explanations lead me to watch a tutorial series on KZfaq, so I subscribed to the channel (every French fellow here already knows who I'm talking about), discovered their other video series, both on Minecraft and other games (many of which I discovered in the process), and from there I discovered other channels...it also gave me the habit of looking for online tutorials for Minecraft stuff, and often left comments, until I became friends with two other small youtubers like me (because of course I started making videos too)...yeah, SO many things in my teenage life ultimately derive from the absence of an in-game tutorial.

Did you know on the xbox 360 first version of the tutorial level, there was a nether portal inside the giant "Minecraft" sign floating in the sky? I remember finding it when it was released and I feel like no-one mentions it.

Fun fact - to July 2012 MC frontpage still counted separately people who "bought the game" and "registred" (so pirated etc.)

One of the biggest appeals of Minecraft is exploration, and learning how some things work is part of that. Will say some should be explained since nobody would randomly figure out how to do things like make a sea beacon work though.

We got an update sometimes monthly and sometimes we had to wait a half year when it was released to the consoles. But we also got the turtorials. I still keep them on a sparefile to this day.

Bit of a shame, I've always enjoyed organically figuring out games, I remember having a million saves of the tutorial levels on PS3 by me going back and forth as refreshers or to learn about something I had never seen before.
