So many things running thru his head, is Elsie dead or alive, had she just run off with a chinese man, what would the papers write ruining their reputations, how will he comfort his wife?

They were in denial. It is like a young woman still living at home or going to college today telling her parents she is going to "hang out" with friends on spring break in FL. Or go to the Grand Canyon or one of a million other things...she was doing with friends or was going to one place and actually goes to another. If they find a body and inform the parents that she was found in a back alley in a trunk in some place she wasn't expected to be, because they believed their daughter wouldn't lie about her whereabouts and date of return, they may say something like oh no, it can't be her. She is away at college and said her and her friends were heading to Florida on spring break. She couldn't possibly be that gal in a trunk in an alley in NY. Why would she be in NY? She never lied to us. She said she would be in Florida and not to worry she would be back next week...

People respond to tragedy in different ways. When my father passed away, my mom was obviously upset, but I "acted calm and emotionless" because I knew seeing me go to pieces was the last thing she needed at that time. Besides, it was a different time with vastly different attitudes, and not everyone is going to respond how strangers think they should respond.

I suppose that many thought that the relationship was due to her involvement with the immigrant community. The parents probably found it easier to deny knowledge of their daughter missing and had been aware of her feelings but didn’t want scandal due to their social status. Different attitudes at the time as unmarried women who became pregnant often went on ‘extended vacations’ with the same mindset. If they knew of her true feelings towards the men, they may have hoped that they eloped and left the city rather than to have to deal with the what was considered scandalized behavior. Denial is used as a defense mechanism.

In those days, you wouldn't even have to leave the country. You could go west under an assumed name and blend right into another Chinese community, but it would be just as easy to get on a boat and sail off.

He could have went anywhere. Back then a person could just move away, alter their appearance a bit, change their name and begin a whole new life. I'm not sure if he'd return to China as China was in a very unstable condition at the time. Reason he left in the first place. Canada seems more likely to me. Close to NY it would be simple for him to move there.

The knew how to make good luggage in those days. Nothing like the plastic handled wheely cases we have now, that when you grab them from the luggage carousel at the airport, the handle snaps off in your hand, and the rest of the bag has another ride around the carousel. During that period of time. People did not show emotion. And more than likely the Father thought that his Daughter was in a situation that looked like she was in a position of poor taste. So the stone face would of been appropriate for his assumption of the situation. Not many people of that era showed emotion. Under normal circumstances. Why would he have? When he thought so little of her.

His stoic demeanor yes, that can be attributed to showing strength for his wife and also distaste at his daughter's choices, but can also reflect on his distaste and ultimately his shame and resentment that his daughter would do this to shame the family. My father is German. And I can tell you his greatest concerns with his children growing up was 1) that he HAD to have a male heir to carry on the family name. And his firstborn died. Then they proceeded to confirm to have children all of us girls which was frustrating to him...he didn't know what to do with us and we were not as valuable to him as having a son. He forced my mother to continue having children until she gave him a son. And then she was shoved aside and his son became his pride and joy, doted upon. We girls and women weren't important. And neither was mom. Barefoot and in a thin nightgown because slowly everything she had wore out. I gave her my clothes. Bought her shoes. On my tips and earnings from work while I was still in HS. 2) DO NOT SHAME and, my father is PROUD. And he would warn us girls constantly not to shame him or his name. When we displeased him, written off. He didn't murder us. But some families take it so seriously they are driven to kill the woman/girl child who shames them. No I would not put it past the father to have killed both out of shame. And the law only cared that they found her and tried to solve the case by blaming him, even tho he too was missing. He may have been a victim as well. Just never found. And the shame and rage of an angry father would be such that he could lose control and tell the guy he was gonna make him disappear. And then do it. Many Chinese raised animals for consumption. Who knows if some pigs were fed? Or a body ended up just gone...a million ways a person can end up missing.

@@resarm5007I am sorry you had that experience with your Dad. Mine was German too. A little controlling yes. I attributed that to his military backround. 11 years he was in service. But he adored my Mother. And tried to reach us on positive levels. When your a kid with a Father in the military it is tough. But once we were adults. He took his time to get to know us as Adult people. He never had Man chores or Woman. We learned how to mow a lawn just has washing dishes. I am confused with what you seen growing up. Being contributed to German. I did not realize German Men were like that. I always thought they were one of the least chauvinist of Nationalities. Along with the Irish. I guess it's an individuel thing. I just never seen that in my home. I am sorry again that, that was your experience. Hopefully you never turned around and married it. Because dummy that I was. Mine was chauvinist. I eventually left him. I was to young to relize that not all Men were like my Father.

Or else he DIDN'T leave the country, and Elsie's other boyfriend killed both of them. He was probably dumped somewhere and if he was ever found, deemed to have been a vagrant and tossed in a common grave somewhere. If that happened before Elsie's body was found, nobody connected the dots.

True, but 1905 is not that far back. My grandmother was born in 1923 and died in the 90s. I was born only 59 years later, '64. I'm so far, alive and well. (Knock on wood). Also, sneaking off to have a good time probably always happened - opportunistically, but in some families, parents watched over their charges so closely, they couldn't blink unnoticed. In my mom's community (1950's Detroit), your neighbors would report on you to your parents and you'd be in BIG trouble. Your parents didn't have to ask, people would just volunteer. Yep, being a Black child in Detroit, it was hard to get away with things. That didn't last. The 1960s ruined family life (well for Black Detroiters anyway).

@@gaslitworldf.melissab2897 This is coming from a white woman born to a married couple in St. Louis on Thanksgiving in '89, so, take it with a grain of salt, but, listening to my (annoyingly liberal) parents, who were born in '49... It seems to me like around the 1960s, as you mentioned, the state / government welfare system began to substitute for black fathers, leading to the collapse of the black nuclear family. It became par for the course to have children out of wedlock in order to receive things such as EBT, TANF, section 8 housing, and, (if one is lucky,) child support. Being raised by a single mother is the largest indicator (over ANY other variable, including and even when adjusted for factors such as income) of whether or not a child will, in their future, drop out of compulsory school, become incarcerated, accrue significant debt, check into a drug rehab, etc. This shift away from the family and towards a matriarchal black family/society led to high crime rates and systemic poverty. This lead to the minority of fathers who would be there for their children to otherwise be incarcerated, lose custody, or develop drug addictions. I have so many stories from my black friends of stepfathers who abused them sexually, physically, and emotionally, it's sickening. Choosing single motherhood isn't liberating, it's selfish and objectively harmful to the child. I'd be interested to hear your response to my theory.
