The Surprisingly Cool Augmented Chord

The augmented chord is really useful and just a little bit strange. Because it’s a symmetrical chord (made up of equal intervals) you can’t invert it without creating a new augmented chord, and its instability can be incredibly useful for moving progressions forward, say into a ii-V-I chord sequence, or even a key change.

I really appreciate your lessons, and that soothing Texas accent really makes me feel at home, n'est-ce pas? The only problem is that I was a member of the Dalton Gang. Daltonian is French for the blindness of colour. With that highlight colour you use on your keyboard (blue, purple?) it is really hard to see when it's on a black key. Could you please start using a yellow colour if possible? Merci.

Ahhhhhhh, that's interesting, Lawrence - thanks for the feedback there. I actually selected the colour because it's a good contrast, but I'll try to keep it away from black keys in the future!

I enjoyed the lesson, as a teacher always looking for novel ways to explain these concepts. I wonder though why you start counting semitones the way that you do, saying that a M2 is 3 half steps apart. Wouldn't you say that they're 2? A P1 is 0 half steps apart, there is no motion. Do you say that an octave is 13 half steps?
