Just in time for Halloween, this is the first in a series of videos looking at local history & folklore in my hometown Kidderminster.
This particular account is looks at the story behind Kidderminster Witch Becky Swan who was well known locally as a witch in the 1800’s. She lived on Comberton Lane (now Comberton Hill).

A poor elderly lady who loved by her pets who was possibly psychic. There is no evidence she was a witch,poor woman.And after all of that she combusted So sad .RIP.

When I was a kid it was called station hill.

Yeah I’ve known it as Station Hill & Comberton Hill - I think it’s interchangeable. On map’s it’s shown as Comberton Hill but I think people call it Station Hill because that’s where the railway stations are.

Very interesting story thank you for sharing. I think every town and village had at least one Becky in those days. As a result of poor education, belief in superstition and the overpowering effect of the church people were very credulous and believed in ghosts, phantoms witches etc because they were unable to identify another logical cause for strange phenomena. Some people, particularly women, would have taken advantage of this and became "wise women" who professed to have powers for good and bad. A hundred years earlier and Becky might well have been condemned to death, the mere possession of cats and her appearance being regarded as conclusive evidence of witchcraft.

Thanks PJ really appreciate that. I’m working on one currently about a local character from my childhood, he used to dress up as Charlie Chaplin & cause all sorts of mischief in Kidderminster. Many thought he was a victim of shell shock, he wasn’t but I’m doing a piece on him as he was a very popular figure locally

Thank you so much for your feedback, I never noticed how shrill the music was at the start. I was really pleased with the book animation I created, I’ll have to rethink the music that accompanies it next time. I’m still pretty new to this so welcome any constructive feedback. 🙏
