As a math teacher i say that well implemented tables are ALWAYS better than true randomness. If a selection process is truly random it’s just as likely that someone could get every talisman except the WEX talismans for their entire playtime as it is that someone gets nothing but WEX talismans, a table at least can introduce a little more consistency. Obviously this applies to any skill, WEX is just the obvious go to that can work on almost every set.

It’s so interesting to hear different people’s takes on number distributions. As a research scientist, number tables drive me nuts. Truest random numbers always look ugly with weird duplicates showing up right next to each other and the extremes either having seemingly way too many or way too few. But that’s the only data set makes the most sense statistically. (This may not matter to most, but in my line of work, data sets boil down to statistical relationships, so I guess I’m biased?) But, depending on how the table is programmed you might be changing certain variables dynamically or having a StdDev that gets more descriptive as you approach the mean with exceptions made for first and third quintiles. It makes statistics so much less meaningful, and I never know what I’m actually looking at haha. But getting back to the point of the video, of course you want something to protect against duplicates in your video games. I get there are no “true random number sets” in programming, but also, you just want to see different things, not weird clumps of the same thing around the mean. Wow... that was unnecessary in a KZfaq comment section... I’m going to go now

1:38:00 On the topic of the long apex roars. What I've found and believe to be the case is that during that time you're trying to do as much damage to the apex as possible, attempting to hit a damage threshold. If that threshold is hit the apex stops its big attack on the gate. If I recall Utsushi also has a small shoutout saying something along the lines of preventing the attack by attacking the monster. It is equivalent to the attack that Ibushi does where he hovers in front of the gate bringing up several spinning rocks around him. If you destroy all of the rocks before he hurls them at the gate, you'll stop the attack and cause a topple allowing the hunters to go ham while he is downed.

2 hours and 21 minutes of pure joy. Literally the best podcast to exist, and the only podcast where I watch every episode from start to finish. Also from a realistic standpoint, the Narwa fight in Rise is basically Rise's equivalent to the second Zorah Magdaros fight. The story has not finished yet and both title update 1 and 2 are story related updates with update 2 being the actual ending of the game. My prediction is that Narwa and Ibushi are going to meet up and Ibushi will impregnate Narwa or whatever. Narwa would then give birth to multiple babies at once, and they would destroy the general area, I guess, so we gotta kill Narwa for good in some super charged up state probably before she can give birth in the first place. Also unfortunately I need to officially hate you Rurikhan because Almudron is the best monster in the entire game and you can't convince me otherwise.
@emosgowoof
@emosgowoof 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely liked the narwa fight a whole hell of a lot more than the ibushi fight, simply because there was no rampage filler to get through, just to get to the fight. The narwa fight was also clearly better designed to better incorporate this massive arena fight with a badass monster alongside seige weaponry, actua intentional wirebug mechanics and both dragonator and nukes.

To be fair to the “we have to call it out” argument There are alot of companies that will ease up on certain standards if they see that fanbase is ok with it Guilty Gear is seeing this now when tons of people were assuming that the devs would change certain features and saying that we shouldn’t complain because they get it Then when they did a Q and A they talked about changing features specifically because of the fan response I just think there’s a balance to critiquing seemingly obvious flaws in a game
@meikahidenori

Yeah. I'm finding making key quests in Rise visable & chooseable and removing alot of the padding quests has effected the game quite a bit. Sure it's what the fanbase wanted but now you can choose the path of least resistance to get to HR 7 with zero challenges in the way and without the padding quest the lack of variety in the quest pool is huge. It's a shame, as it is fixable but you need to go the other way a little, maybe make the key quests not freely chooseable so you're forced to do the harder hunts and just more padding quests! 😁

Base world also had investigations instead of literally doing the exact same quests to hunt a monster for parts it mixes the system up so it’s not anywhere near as monotonous. Also you can fight captures monsters in the arena as well. World had more to do. That’s not debatable.

9:40 sorry gaijin I disagree with this take. While I agree that restarting saves is very silly. Just because you arent hardcore doesnt mean you shouldnt be justified in wanting to be able to get the hot charm. While you may not need it, moments where you get god tier rewards are extreme highlights no matter who you are. And whether you know or not if you are able to get the sicko mode charm, just knowing that theres a chance you arent on the correct table really devalues the potential excitement from charm farming. I feel like the mindset of "if you arent a top tier speed runner why do you really care" is really detrimental to the important feeling of a level playing field.

With respect, I disagree with Gaijin's opinion about most people need not to worry about mere 1 or 2 level slot unless they are doing TAs. While the statement is true; getting one or two more slots would not grant people faster clear time that much. But mix maxing is huge part of playing rpg games. If people know that there are better talisman out there, they want to have it no matter how small the difference is because that desire keeps them going on the grind. being able to 'complete' the best build possible would make anyone happy regardless of their play style.

The content definitely doesn't feel like there's more there than world. We had tempered monsters, way more elder dragons type monsters in Vaal, Kushala, Teostra, kirin, nergigante, and xenojiva, a campaign that dragged things out, but created more of an atmosphere, plus environments that felt far more alive, and offered way more in interactivity. Think the sand pit collapsing into the first floor of the sand caverns, the waterfall washing down a rathalos, water pods to wash barroth, Vaal taking you to another arena, fighting Nerg on top of Zorah etc. The monsters AI also interacted with their environments far more. It just overall felt far more immersive to me than rise and I'm about 150 hours into Rise. Don't get me wrong, I love rise, and I do prefer Rise' combat. I just think talking down on world and saying RIse is without a doubt better is a stretch. Anyway, love your podcast guys. Keep it up.

I gotta side with Rurikhan with regards to the 'teaser ending' after defeating Thunder Serpent Narwa (it's not _as_ bad as seeing the credits roll after defeating Magnamalo so soon in village quests); when you bested Xeno'jiiva in World, or Shagaru Magala in MH4U, that wrapped up the main story in a fairly nice way -- it solved the Elder Crossing, the Caravaneer finally identified his "artifact".

@lukefinley6660

@@fistybaby9489 Totally disagree that there is no endgame or incomplete. Yes there are a couple areas (like armor sets) that the game has less to choose from compared to past base games, however there are other areas where it has more than past base games. Like the endgame loop is 100x better and more refined than it was in World. The difficulty is up to you, director Ichinose said himself that the difficulty in Rise would be different and controllable on a personal level, to where literally the same difficulty from the demo magnamalo is still in the game. The difficulty is based off of whether you eat/use spiribird buffs. Think any of the 6* or 7* quests are too easy, or even the final rampages? Try them solo without eating or spiribird buffs. Want the same Magnamalo demo difficulty? Then try the same but also with un upgraded armor, you'll still have every one of your skills but can be 1 shot by some moves, 2-3 shot by most others.
@fistybaby9489
@fistybaby9489 3 жыл бұрын
@@lukefinley6660 I feel like having to impose restrictions on myself for a game to have difficulty is bad game design. My favorite fight in WorldBorne is AT Velkhana, the reason is that even with fully upgrades fatalis armor with fully gems out sets and weapons with augs and upgrades she could still one shot you. And it wasn’t that she just hit harder it’s that she was made as a boss to fight after fatty so they gave her cool new moves and made her faster to help her keep up with your super endgame build so that she wouldn’t be a push over. That’s what Rise is missing, 90% of the monsters in Rise just get destroyed by a Hunter with an ok build and not even a ramped up weapon because with the mix of wire bugs and switch skills the hunters are too mobile. The only monster that is truly scaled to match these new mechanics imo is Magnamalo, he has the increased speed and attack patterns to punish bad wirebug usage that a majority of the roster lacks. Plus the reason I say that Rise lacks an endgame is because there isn’t a reason to farm for a god charm to max a build out BECAUSE NOTHING IN THE GAME IS HARD ENOUGH FOR IT, I beat HR magnamalo with LR gear and only carted once. The game is too easy and there isn’t any challenge in it that is worth doing a farm for a god talisman because the reason you do that is to fit as much as you want into a build to make a fight easier, but that isn’t needed if the fights are already easy.
@lukefinley6660
@lukefinley6660 3 жыл бұрын
@@fistybaby9489 Theres some points i'd like to make about what you just said. First off, if you dont like the idea of they decided to try something new, with difficulty, then thats totally fine and your own preference. However, how selfish would it be to want the "difficulty" forced on every other player in the world, vet or newcomer, whether they enjoy that or not? Also, you are comparing AT Velkhana, which is one of the final bosses added to a G rank expansion more than a YEAR after its launch, which was launched on top of a base game that also had 2 years of free updates. Conparisons are fine, but you have to compare a BASE game at launch to another base game at launch, so World before any updates (not iceborne), Monster hunter Cross (Not MHGU), Monster hunter 4 (not 4u), etc. Also, for your arguement for needing min maxed builds....There has NEVER been a necessity for a min/max build in any base MH game at launch ever. People min max only for speedrunning (which are scripted runs so difficulty is irrelevant) or just because they feel better about themselves, which is totally fine, but not forced on anyone ever.
@meikahidenori
@meikahidenori 3 жыл бұрын
@@fistybaby9489 disagree, though point is valid. I find maxing every single thing out to the most optimal sucks alot of the fun out a game, and it doesn't just apply to monster hunter. Give players a way to use the path of least resistance and take the optimal route at any given opportunity and players will make a game unfun to play very very fast for themselves or in the case of multiplayer, everyone else. Sure, it's a playstyle many enjoy but it's not the only one in existence, however it's the one you can't build a proper game around. A good example of how hard it is would be trying to DM a game of D&D at lvl 15, but players have so many broken combos of magic items, feats and spells that even though they're nowhere near lvl 20 there isn't a single monster you can throw at them that would be a challenge that they couldn't instantly steamroll then complain the game is boring because it's easy. Same deal here. Sure you can make the 100% ultimate god teir damage build but all you're doing is locking yourself out of other various ways to play because you've already finished said game and are now bored with nothing to do. It's not something game designers can fix either - they tried stopping players doing that in X Com and players still figured ways around it. Sometimes us players can be our own anti fun enemies. And don't just say make monsters harder, end of argument because it's dumb. They will always make harder monsters and players will always optimise the crap out of a game regardless of it's difficulty.

Fun coding thing: One issue Capcom may be having with charms is the use of a HashMap or similar object: certain charms being tied to certain values in an extremely large “table”. They may have a collision handling equation in this map to make it somewhat random. The issue sounds like this equation has the potential to reach a point where it creates an infinite loop in the map, even though it’s not supposed to, once you land on a certain value once. Of course, it could be a separate issue entirely, but this sounds like a possible explanation. If this is the case, it ideally shouldn’t be too tough to fix though so good news there.

On the topic of the desire sensor, I was trying to get the Purple Magna Orb. I went on 25 hunts with two pilfer palicos and took the time to kill so I could get multiple carves, and on the 26th run, I finally got on... from a shiny drop. Since then, I've gotten 3 off a minimum of 10 hunts.

Great episode as always! thanks guys. I just want to say my truth, and it is that i preffer long sword users on online play rather than those selfish gunlance players, as a charge blade user you don't know how irritating is that you are preparing an ultra phial discharge on the monster's head and there comes the gunlance player to blow you and everyone else away without any care in the world. At least i can jam in flinch free and not worry about long sword users. Also I think that at this point in the franchise, long sword has come to be a more complex weapon than gunlance in regards of movepool and overall mastery, but that is only my opinion, dont take it personal. Love the content and keep up the great work!

Concerning charm tables: You don't need to program the charms to have an extremely long list of skills in an array. You can create an array that holds each individual skill and create sentinels to put on an arbitrary limit to what each charm can have. Instead, you can pull from the charm array using the srand formula. This would allow you to pull completely randomized charm skills and not have to worry about overpowered or underpowered charms. You can program each rarity of charm to have an arbitrary limit using sentinels. If you were good enough at syntax, you could feasibly do this method for less dynamic memory allocation than is currently used with the table method. Each of those tables have to be set in memory. If there is more data entry being used for the creation of the tables than there are skills than the srand pulling from an array method would be "cheaper" than the tabular method.

You totally could get rid of tables when generating charms from s programming perspective - just generate them on the fly instead of having any predetermined charms. Give each skill and slot level a points value depending on how powerful it is (so, wexp might get more points than sleep resist, a level 2 slot is worth more points than a level 1 slot, etc.) Then, whenever you roll a charm it gets randomly generated a points budget (roughly equivalent to rarity as it is currently). Then, as long as the charm has budget left, add a random slot or skill that will fit within its remaining budget.

I think that the difficulty for Hub in Rise was done perfectly. The thing that SO MANY KZfaqRS are forgetting, is during the prelaunch weeks ICHINOSE himself said in a couple dif interviews that the difficulty in Rise is different, and controllable through the petalace and food buffs. I honestly think its a bit towards asinine to talk about difficulty without even MENTIONING or trying hunts with and without the food and spiribird buffs. IMAGINE in a game with a traditional difficulty setting, that a player goes and manually changes it to "super easy" and then goes on to talk about lack of difficulty LOL. Even just by grabbing the omni spiribird in Rampages and the Narwa hunt, you are already turning on easy mode. By also eating you are turning on super easy mode. If you liked the Magnamlo difficulty in the demo, then try fighting him in HR and dont eat or grab spiribird buffs, and to go in with un upgraded armor (just how we were in the demo, but you still get your skills so it keeps it fun). His big moves can def 1 shot you, and the smaller moves will 2-3 hit kill. I think this version of difficulty modification is GENIUS because in past games, the difficulty was set to the quest and players had almost 0 individual choice. Whereas now vets can make the game harder if they choose, and less veteran players can choose to make it easier, in the exact same hunt. I agree that i feel the village quests are a little too on the easy side but thats also been a good thing for brand new players.

59:28 well in the older games, we had the veggie elder. the elder melder was just an evolution of that so you didn't have to go into a specific quest to get a specific rare item. i can understand if your complaint was that they gave you too many tickets, as the steam works/seasonal celebration events give you plenty of tickets. however, not having the any elder system in this game just causes more strife for players.

the gout table is also bad for lbg as you can't get rapid fire lv2 with spread/pierce/normal up lv1 let alone with any slots included. this limits the builds you can make, as you could make something with rapid fire lv3 and s/p/n at lv3 in which case weakness ex is just a nice bonus for the set.

About the charm tables, aparently im on a bowgun table. I mainly get charms with bg skills like reload, deviation, aim booster, etc. As a LS/HBG main (the bane of rurikhan and arekks lol) im liking it, but it limits me a little to try out sets. I try out other weapons without the chams, or just use the slots of any.

I’m coming off of Iceborne into Rise, and I mained the insect glaive. Coming into rise, I’m finding it a bit challenging mainly because I’m going from the glaive to a charge blade, which I’ve never used. And the struggle isn’t as hard as when I first played world, but i still am having a MORE challenging time due to just learning a new weapon and play style.

1. We aren't waiting 4 weeks for all the intended content to be in the game, we are waiting for whenever the second patch hits for that. So probably 3 months I'd guess. 2. It is absolutely fair to asses whether or not it is worth the purchase price based on content in the game at launch, regardless of when updates are coming. Not everyone plays a single game for 3 months. 3. You ABSOLUTELY need to call out when games ships incomplete, regardless of the reason. If you don't, they will become complacent and continue to do it with less and less valid reasons. It already happens. You can still call it out and hold them to the mark while being understanding about the reason behind it

This is very true. It's also worth noting that this is important for whether you can honestly recommend the game to someone. After the 2.0 patch, for someone who's not obsessed with monster hunter, I'd figure the game is currently maybe worth 2/3 of its list price, so I wouldn't actually recommend it to someone who's not a fanatic if they're not the sort of person who enjoys repeatedly revisiting games over time. A year from now maybe they'll have released enough that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it at full price. That's something the reviews and recommendations should really be doing a better job of taking into account.

So I also thought about maybe a Hunt with both Ibushi and Narwa and that's because they could do something cool with like a bonding attack but it could easily get Alatreon type difficulty real quick since we might not have seen them in the final phase. But I also like the reference to Fujin in Ibushi armor and Raijin in Narwa so I hope when they make more elders for this game they keep taking influence from Japanese Gods that's really cool but The Offspring definitely has to be the true final boss. It doesn't say it the hunter notes about the Apex's and it makes sense since Mizu is using Hellfire blight it has to be that they survived battles with Magnamalo
