Something worth noting: that 1992 post-season, Aikman set a all-time post-season passer rating. It's probably been broken since then.....but he was on-fire in the '92 playoffs.

I was too young to really have a lot of memories of watching Roger Staubach playing live. But Danny White I remember well. I was so upset in 84 when he was benched in favor of Gary Hogeboom and was so happy to see him reinstated by the end of year. I truly believe that if that QB controversy hadn't happened in 84 the team would have made the playoffs that year.

In the 1980 season, he led an offense that had 3 players (Dorsett, Peason, & Hill) that each had over 1000 total yards gained. That was the first time that happened in NFL history. It was first full season he took over after Staubach retired. White would lead the Cowboys to 3 straight NFC Championship games but couldn't get past the Eagles, 49ers, & Redskins.

Amazing stat about Danny: he never had a losing season as the Cowboys' starting QB, and had only one losing record his whole career. He routinely had a 59-62% completion percentage in an era when teams threw the ball downfield --his yards-per-completion was consistently one of the best in the league. Very underrated for sure

The sad thing is if he doesn't White would have kept the Cowboys winning had he not broken his wrist, which killed his ball rotation. The three Danny White NFC Championship games are an important part of Cowboys history. Philly, San Fran, and Washington. They were some of the toughest losses. In the Washington game White was knocked out of the game just before half time. Gary Hogeboom took over and threw two 4th quarter picks. Danny White wins one of those, and I would move him up above Romo. As it actually stands, I agree 100% with this list. Awesome content, that was a good one.

That Washington game was such a heartbreaker for me. I wanted Dexter Manley ejected from the game because I thought it was a dirty hit (it wasn't by the standards of the time, but I was young and a homer for Danny and Dallas). That concussion plus a muffed punt down near the goal line in the second quarter really buried the team in a hole. Hogeboom threw 2 touchdowns in the third quarter to cut the Washington lead down to only one score but then as you mentioned threw 2 INTs in the 4th quarter. The worst part of it all was that he played just well enough that Landry decided he might be the QB of the future for the team. That led them to pass up on taking Dan Marino in the next draft (yeah he was still on the board when Dallas picked in the 1st round) and it led to that absurd QB controversy in 84.

Great video. It's important to note that Staubach not only won 4 NFL passing titles (e.g., 1971, 1973, 1978, 1979), he retired in 1980 with the highest passer rating in NFL history and he may have been the most complete QB (e.g., passer, runner, leader, winner) in NFL history.
@bobbywise2313
@bobbywise2313 Жыл бұрын
If not for the Steele curtain he would have had a couple more Superbowl wins. Both games were 4 point wins for the Steelers. There were a few key mistakes made in their second super bowl meeting. I think it was perhaps the best Superbowl ever though.
@pjtheory
@pjtheory Жыл бұрын
@@bobbywise2313 Agreed. In the 1975 post-season, Roger faced 3 of the 4 top ranked defenses (e.g., #1 Vikings, #2 Rams, #4 Steelers) in the NFL and Captain America almost willed his Wild Card Cowboys to a Super Bowl title. Heck, the final play of Super Bowl 10 was Staubach throwing a bomb into the end zone in a 4 point game. Super Bowl 13 was the greatest match-up in Super Bowl history with a combined roster of 17 future Hall of Fame players. It's important to remember that despite all of the praise heaped on Terry Bradshaw''s Super Bowl performance, Staubach would have equalled that performance if future HOF TE Jackie Smith didn't drop Roger's perfect pass in the end zone.
@bobbywise2313
@bobbywise2313 Жыл бұрын
@@pjtheory In addition to Smiths dropped pass I recall a fumble on a kick off return that was huge. Roger was definitely a better QB than Bradshaw. Both had great backs and receivers.

@@bobbywise2313 The 2nd half of Super Bowl 13 was a nightmare for America's Team. It began with Jackie Smith dropping a touchdown pass that would have tied the game 21-21 in the 3rd quarter. In the next series, Lynn Swann ran up the back of Benny Barnes resulting in both Swann and Barnes falling to the ground. The official closest to the play waved off the play as incidental contact whereas the official on the OTHER side of the field called pass interference on Barnes. The Steelers subsequently scored a touchdown on a draw play to Franco Harris in which an official collided with Charlie Waters as he attempted to tackle Harris. Kicker Roy Gerela then slipped on the turf during the kickoff, the ball squibbed on the ground, and Randy White picked up the ball and attempted to run with it. White put the ball in his left hand, his left hand was in a cast due to breaking his thumb in the NFC Championship Game, and White fumbled the ball to the Steelers. Swann then scored a touchdown to put the Steelers ahead 35-17 with a little over 6 minutes left in the game. The only game or call that was as heartbreaking was the 1994 NFC Championship Game when the Cowboys AGAIN got screwed on a crucial pass play. The Cowboys were down by 10 with 6 minutes left in the game when Deion Sanders arm-barred Michael Irvin at the 6 yard line, but the official kept his flag in his pocket.
@bobbywise2313
@bobbywise2313 Жыл бұрын
@@pjtheory I remember that Randy White fumble. I bet he wished he would have just fallen on the ground with the ball in hindsight. But, why the hell was he even on the kickoff team? The possibility of an onside kick or a blunder kick is always there. This just turned out perfect for the Steelers. And like you said numerous other cases of bad luck hitting them down the stretch. But it was still a tremendous game between two all time greats that matched up so perfectly with each other. Does anyone remember who was actually favored? I was only an 11 year old kid and clearly remember Fran Tarkington picking Dallas pre game. But that is all I can remember as far as predictions. I honestly think for me the NFL was never the same after that season. I became a bigger college football fan and slowly drifted away from the NFL. Nothing could compare to those Steeler and Cowboy teams. It wasn't just the hard nosed play but the personalities of many of my favorites. Yes I loved players on both teams. Joe Green, Randy White, Ed Jones, Franco Harris, Tony Dorset, Terry Bradshaw and of course Roger the Dodger. And we all loved the man in the hat, Tom Laundry. He was the kind on man you would not want to play pocker against.

I beg to differ. Romo and Dak both are statistically more accurate and it's not even close. Dak's worst season accuracy wise is better than Aikman's best. Eye test? Dak is better than romo as Romo kinda just chucked it. Aikman was good but he isn't the most accurate and even if he is somehow it sure as hell sin't hands down. I mean blood has multiple sub 60% comp season and averaged 0.85 Interceptions a game compared to Dak who's worst season was 62.9/63% comp and averages 0.67 interceptions a game and even that is inflated because Daks recievers cost him like 6 interceptions last year with their all time great drops.

Good deep dive. Staubach also revolutionized the league by making the shotgun successful. Pat Summerall called Aikman the most accurate thrower he'd ever seen, and that man probably saw more football than about anyone in history. The only change I'd make is flipping Meredith and White, based on 3 Pro Bowls v 1, stat inflation, struggling expansion team, etc.. I've basically got Don tied with Romo. I did my own study when Romo retired to determine who'd be 3rd on my All Time roster. I finally concluded that they're very similar players; gunslingers who could move some and make things happen with similar career arcs. I gave Romo the edge because when they got to a similar point in their careers, Meredith retired (in his prime, making the Pro Bowl his last 3 years), while Romo kept playing and had another great season a few years later. Meredith went on to become one of the most iconic broadcasters of all time.
@thelogicalcowboy
@thelogicalcowboy Жыл бұрын
Good post as usual. I totally forgot about the shotgun. That could have driven home the point more for Staubach. 😠. Oh well lol. Yeah Meredith was speacial. 6 straight seasons in the top 10 in passing yards is impressive. Danny White had 5 seasons in the top 10 in tds. But he never had the number one offense in the league. Meredith had it twice. On the other hand white went to an extra championship. Neither one won a championship tho. Both quarterbacks were treated horrible by the fan base. White had to fill the shoes of an icon. While Meredith had the pressure to establish the beginnings of a legendary franchise in the postseason. I can see putting Meredith ahead of white. Both were legends. Tony Romo is the most unappreciated quarterback in Cowboys history. Romo has almost every major passing record in Cowboys history and yet doesn't deserve to be in the top 5? 😒 But that's the beauty of sports. We all have our own opinion. Thanks bro for a different point of view that makes sense.

When Staubach retired, he had the 2nd highest career passer rating in pro football after Otto Graham (if you count Otto's 4 years in the AAFL), but if you only count NFL stats (or NFL+AFL stats), Staubach retired with the highest career passer rating in the NFL. Also, to add to the info about Romo actually being quite good in big moments, from the time he became a starter in 2006 until his last start in 2015, he led the NFL in 4th quarter comebacks and game winning drives, and had the highest passer rating in the 4th quarter, in overtime, and in the final 2 minutes of both the first and second half. Also, in 2014, in the divisional round loss to the Packers, he finished that game with the highest passer rating for a losing quarterback in playoff history.

Meredith helped give the Cowboys credibility, and though I was too young to see him play, I will always appreciate him for that. It's astounding the punishment he took, it's amazing he lasted as long as he did. Of course I always enjoyed him in the Monday Night Football booth after he retired. As always, great breakdown and video!

I wonder how many Aikman passes were dropped where the ball hit the receiver in the hands or between the numbers. He was so accurate some receivers weren't prepared for a ball to be that well placed. Irvin says in more than a couple of interviews that he arrived on the spot where the ball was supposed to be thrown and he wouldn't turn around he would just put his hands up and there it was. Romo spent most of his career being Houdini and running for his life, covering for a porous offensive line.

Having a great OL also helped. Other than his first few seasons, he generally had great pass protection. He also had a great RB that defenses had to respect. And best of all, he had a TE that almost guaranteed a first down in a 3rd and 6 situation. But yes he was extremely accurate. I do think he was like a machine and required the parts to all be working though. Roger, on the other hand, could create plays out of nothing. He may not have been as accurate, but he was great at quick decision making. I could see either at number 1 but I think I agree with Roger being at the top. Roger and Troy both suffered a lot of concussions that likely cut their careers short. I certainly hope no long term cognitive issues exist for either.

I just have one thing to say about Danny White…..yes he did put up good stats but the thing that soiled him in my opinion was that NFC championship game with the 49ers. Even though Montana and Clark teamed up for that touchdown pass near the end of the game…..White had plenty of time to move his team downfield for a field goal…..that’s all they needed….and what happens…..he turns the ball over. If Roger had been in that situation it would have been a victory for Dallas and “the catch” wouldn’t have meant anything. Danny White is just another Craig Morton…..in that he put up good numbers but he couldn’t get the job done!

Ah! @ozneroll2132 . . . that's good of you to remember that Championship game as it played out in the final minutes, as the common impression a lot of people have of that game was "the catch" being the 49ers win in the final seconds; which, in reality, was not. As the oft repeated phrase of _defense wins championships_ rung true for the 49ers on that day in the final minutes of that game.

Got to go with Staubach and Aikman as 1-2 due to the Super Bowl wins. I'd put White #3 because of 3 consecutive NFC Championship games and he set the records that Aikman and Romo broke in an era that wasn't as pass-heavy as their eras - Aikman IMO was slightly more accurate, White was much more mobile, but the SB wins puts Aikman ahead of White. I'm ok with Romo #4, and Merideth #5. I was too young to remember seeing Merideth, so perhaps if I had seen him, he might be higher.

I would agree with this rank list. I tell people all the time - Romo holds virtually every QB record in Dallas, except for Super Bowls. I can remember only one year during his time that Dallas had anything resembling a good defense and an offensive line. The wins they got were off of his football IQ and ability to escape the pass rush. His 8 years of healthy seasons proves his elite status, as you mentioned.

@benjamincanez9531 do you remember the come from behind victories because our defense couldn't stop anyone. Do you remember the throw I bet you remember the catch but probably not the throw when Dez Bryant caught the pass from Tony Romo to beat the Packers. Did you remember the 2012 defense the third worst and NFL history statistically in spite of that Romp was able to win eight games as a starter and everyone knows you need defense. I know some people don't understand football is a team sport I don't understand the increases of the game. You might want to check those numbers out again look at Tony Romo's interception percentage for past thrown versus Peyton Manning's you'll see that Romo's is better. Check out Tom Brady's quarterback rating and Tony Romo's quarterback rating. And remember Matt Cassel with 10 and 5 as the starter for the Patriots in 2008. But went one and seven for the Cowboys in 2015. Romo was 3 and 1 in 2015 as the starter and was 12 and 3 the year before you know the year he made the throw 2014. Rubbermaid horrible teams average an average teams good. You make my point for me he doesn't get the respect he deserves because of fans who don't understand football. Quarterback gets too much blame when a team loses in too much credit when the team wins you don't see Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers getting the same criticism when they played for one winning team and that's because they're not quarterbacks

Also Tony Romo has the same amount of playoff wins as Warren Moon. Moon with a starter for over 15 season Romo only for 9. Only one last playoff Victory then Dan Fouts and the same as Fouts if you count the Packer game where he made the throw. More playoff wins than Sonny Jurgensen and Y. A. Tittle all 4 hall of farmers. Also has the same amount of playoff victories as Ken Anderson who probably should be in the Hall of Fame. Maybe you should watch this guy's video again it's pretty good and pretty accurate

Robo had five victories in one season and more come from behind victories than Tom Brady more game-winning drives than Tom Brady more come from behind victories than Captain come back himself Rodger Staubach. Bet you don't remember any of that but go look back check out all these numbers. You got the order exactly right. You really couldn't go wrong with either Aikman or Roger as #1, but even though Troy had more SB wins, Roger, IMO, did more with (slightly) less talent. (Not a LOT less mind you, but less, regardless.) One thing about Roger no one brings up, but in 1976 he was putting up utterly ridiculous passing numbers right up until the Bears game, where he broke a finger on his throwing hand. He never was quite as accurate after that, and I absolutely believe that broken finger really affected him during the final part of his great career.

The difference between Roger and Romo is winning, performance in big games and absolute unmatchable leadership. The difference between white and aikman is performance in big games and all four could easily be in the Hall of Fame if Danny and Romo win just one damn super bowl. At the end of his career maybe Dak could climb to four possibly three but right now Meredith is ahead of him I agree. And you touched on it not that it changed ratings but the influence they've had off the field has been just as remarkable. And you want to know how remarkable it is just look at the top quarterbacks of every other organization only a few come even close to the cowboys stable of quarterbacks. When he was drafted, he was selected as a "future" draft choice, as he had a year of college eligibility left. The draft was held in Dec. of '63 and Staubach played the '64 season for Navy. According to his book, he was paid a signing bonus and, I believe, a salary during his time in the Navy. I may be wrong about the salary but his contract specified that if he decided not to report to the Cowboys after his military commitment, he didn't have to return the signing bonus or any other money. Not a bad deal!

Typical great video by you. I personally have White and Romo switching spots.

The Cowboys are held to a Super Bowl standard. #1 Aikman #2 Staubach and then it's a toss up. Those are the only two who won championships. I hope Dak can make this list because it would mean the Cowboys won number six!

I have mixed feelings about Romos legacy; because he is the only player on this list who never appeared in any kind of conference championship. He was a great regular season QB. Though he wasn’t the starter for very long, Craig Morton was good enough to not only take the Cowboys to a SB, but also the Broncos. Something a Cowboys QB hasn’t done in 27 years, including an nfc championship appearance, which is something Danny White did three years in a row. Yet, we spoiled fans complained, back then lol

Championships, superbowls, national titles are all team accomplishments. Craig Morton only had two good seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. Two!!... the year he went to the superbowl he had one of the most horrible playoffs in Dallas history or in nfl history for that matter. In fact statistically he's the worst playoff quarterback in Dallas history. There's no way a guy who only had 2 good seasons should be over Romo who has every major passing record in Cowboys history. Thanks for watching

His teams were historically bad through most of his career. Whatever success they had was squarely on his shoulders.

And Roger "lost" 4 years serving in the Navy. Imagine if he would have played those 4 extra years. Imagine if he didn't have so many concussions and could have played an extra five years also.

@@eric-rq7dc You gotta admit that having the name of "Clint" made Longley sound more like a real-life legit cowboy than most other players in the history of the Dallas football franchise. xD

I wish they did not need to include gutless chokers like Danny white. Meredith is the coolest man to ever play/broadcast. Landry said in his memoirs said Don was the toughest guy he ever met and could do anything which allowed Tom to experiment.
