you should do a video on madeline pendleton and tunnel vision! she dated drew bernstein for quite a while i think and she recently talked about him as well as their relationship and shared some cool stories and photos on tiktok! i loooooove her brand, all the clothes are made sustainably and their stuff is plus size friendly and its all really cute and diverse alternative pieces

I know this is late, just felt like sharing that Drew’s brother Reed was my English teacher for a couple of years, and he talked about his brother extremely fondly. He’s why I even know about Lip Service. Honestly one of the realest teachers I’ve ever had in my life

I first bought clothes from Drew when he was still making them in the wearhouse. I got hired at the Lip Service on Melrose in 89 or 90, but I missed my first day, because of a hangover.

I met Drew back in 1981. He was part of the original punk rock scene in LA. I wasn't shocked that he ended up in fashion, because he was way ahead of most of us back then. I last saw him on a flight from LA to NYC in the later 1990s.

This video was really good, too!!! Just an FYI, the Widow brand was purchased by Dolls Kill a few years back and the photos shown in the video are Dolls Kill pieces. The original Widow brand was higher quality and much more unique. Dolls Kill just recycles the same styles for Widow that they use in all their brands, but use different colors and patterns. Plus the quality SUCKS. Love your message on sustainability! I have been solely buying secondhand (except for socks and undies, haha) for at least one year now and it's far better than buying new clothes everyone else is wearing that come from a Chinese sweatshop.

My ex worked for him during the time of Drew’s death. Didn’t personally know him but I’ve met him a few times. I still have original clothes he designed. Keeping them forever

I got more informations on this and now I can tell that Drew's family handed the business to someone that seemed trustworthy and was in fact not So much drama The worst thing is that Drew was really down because of money problem, he cared about his employees and shared his wealth without any hesitation, he was generous and he felt like he failed them when the money problem came up. And now lip service is going strong... Truly sad

I didn't know there was a sad story behind why they dwindled, I remember when they began. Thank you for these histories, they bring back a lot of memories. I about peed myself over that silver metallic cyber dress! NaNa's on Haight St sold a lot of amazing boots, lots of platforms, real leather but pricey. I bought a pair of greasy leather lineman boots there in 1991 or so that I wore almost every day until 2016 when my cat pissed on them and I couldn't save them even with enzymes. Leather breathes and lasts a lifetime if taken care of so it's worth every penny. Oh god, I miss having all these cool stores, you're bringing up names I haven't heard since the mid 90s, it hurts. Even Hot Topic was cool at first when it just sold socks and stuff, I wish I had checked it out.

Modern Lip Service is a shell of its former self. They used to have such cool and unique designs and sub-brands. What are some alternatives for men? Killstar is okay but it's boring in comparison with that same "safe modern goth" style.

Late to the party here lol..but I suspect you are correct. Just last week for hahaha I peeked the Lip Service site,and they added a new version of webutant lace stuff..upon closer inspection of the pics,um....that is the exact same cheap lace dolls kill recently used 2 yrs ago for their widow web lace stuff. The EXACT fkn lace😢 the cuts and look of the pieces even look like widow. Very sus.🤨

Re: your definition, the term "lipservice" was also used by prostitutes on their lists of services adverts and price lists, ie oral pleasuring, I remember from the '70's at least, which I always took to be the decadent humour motive behind the brands name.

I think Drew named the company after the song by Elvis Costello - Lip Service
