Getting up close and personal with all things Railway in Australia! Freight trains, tourist trains, passenger trains, rail fans, building and maintenance.
A 1.5 kilometres long super train travels one of the longest, toughest runs in Australia. George Savell feels the pressure as he tries to keep millions of dollars of iron ore on the tracks, and Leigh Johns and Wil Kemp receive an unexpected passenger as their vintage locomotive tackles a tropical mountain range.

I only watched half because it was drama overload. What happened to the days when Oz programs were delivered in a matter-of-fact sort of way? Do you remember Darryl Eastlake and his style of commentary? I think he was the guy that made things change. I'm not saying he was a bad guy (far from it), but he made everything sound so big.

That was a fascinating trip. This reminds me of the many trips I have taken over the years to go from the south end of the San Joaquin Valley in California up to the Yakima Valley in Washington.

Interesting topic that’s for sure. If you would have added the description and specs of each engine that would have added to the documentary that’s for sure. You know things like Horsepower, etc, etc!!

Not sure I understood the Aussie talk. We have 148 cars of coal, 100 tons per car, 14,800 tons per train (British Columbia). I heard trains of 4000 tons? Not sure we are talking the same numbers. I have also seen 210 cars carrying double stack containers. That's a long train.

@@tonyburzio4107 High rise OHE? Electricity from Nuclear Power plant, wind mill, dams etc? Atcs/Etcs? Double track even tripple or quad track=good traffic management? U can keep diesel locos as backup when required but why waste fuels? Don't they pollute environment?

It sure would have been nice to know what exactly does the very high or low tides do. I know it lifts or lowers the ship, but what's the big deal about that. Don't tell me the engineers didn't consider what the height of the loading hopper/conveyor, should be for either condition, if ??? that is the reason for this B.S. situation. If it is, some engineer should get a new job.

It’s a storm out at sea, causing a tidal surge, apparently. The extremes of weather, are for the individual boats/ trains/ harbour to get through. The best loading systems aren’t for extremes.

Australia is approximately 7.74 million sq km, while the United States is approximately 9.83 million sq km, making the United States 27% larger than Australia. Australia has over 33,000km of track compared with the United States which has the largest rail transport network size of any country in the world, at a total of approximately 260,000 km (160,000 miles)... less than 13%. The Australian government made a decision long ago to go low-rent and not invest in their rail system and now they are sitting back and watching over 200 deaths a year involving trucks... apparently, the Australian people don't care enough to change it.

@@PhilipFry.It is actually very well respected regarding its efficiency of moving freight. Passenger rail is terrible in much of the country, and the country has regulatory issues. However, the country has an incredibly efficient and effective system for shipping freight and consistently ranks in the global top five for per capita freight rail use.

During the trip they pick up more wagons that need to go to Perth. A ship can't do that without a seaport. Also by ship it would take 3 weeks instead of 3 days.

It’s not just this show it’s sadly all of what would have been really interesting documentaries thirty years ago that have now be ruined by the American disease of injecting fake drama commentary and music into these things. It’s just playing to stupid people who are desensitized so much they need this crap added to be able to feel something! This would have been so interesting without all of that!

I was looking forward to this documentary but got fed up with the narrator waving his willy about and the incessant jump cuts. " It's hot! There's dragons! The train is 60 miles long! Here comes a flood! It's hot!" Quick, jump to a picture of a train crash. "It's hot! The train is a 1000 miles long! Watch out for the 50ft high cattle with machine guns!" Quick, jump to a map with a big wooshy noise! Fuck a duck, modern documenatry's do my head in.
