In any other country, the broad coat that is the Democratic party, drawn over a broad spectrum of political beliefs, would be seen as a good thing, an inclusive thing even. Unfortunately the same is no longer true for the GOP. It has slipped way to far to the right. It's very unlikely that the GOP will survive in its present state; whereas the democratic party has much more politically acceptable material to build from. Ironically one could take the few Republican moderates and place them with the more right minded Democrats to form what was the party of Lincoln. The remainder could then reform under the banner of Social Democracy, which would fall in line with western post war politics around the world. Thanks again for the review, excellent job, prompting much thought, well done!

The shitty things Sorkin did was that in the movie he reads American soldiers names, in reality he read American and Vietcong names, they even brought a Vietcong flag. But Sorkin strip that to fit his ideology of we don't want war because we don't want Americans dying. Instead of we don't want war because we don't want anyone dying American or Vietnamese.

Especially in Chicago it's the Same Shit new Stall Judicially here. Our Local Elections are Wayyyy more important right now than the Circus that's happening in the news with 45 and the like as we are Electing our Judges. The scene with Bobby Seale being bound and gagged to his chair not able to speak and not having access to his Lawyers is how black folks feel every day no matter of the perception of how well some are doing. None of these things would've happened or would be happening if our system wasn't so corrupt. Police still get away with bloody murder. I hope this movie opens the eyes and minds of people about how Corrupt our system is.

What is most frustrating is the Hollywood elite Neo-Liberal types who make movies like this side with pro-corporate/pro-status quo candidates like Joe Biden Instead of supporting leftist/pro working class candidates they make movies like this as a sop to the left and a way of saying, "see, I'm progressive!". They're progressive when it comes to events that are safely in the past but not on the issues of the here and now.

I'm probably halfway through viewing. Found it riveting so far. Thought I'd try to find some factual information before I viewed the rest of the film. I'm kind of saddened that I wasn't paying a lot of attention to that trial (I was about 21 at the time). So far (in viewing the film and historical documentaries), I am more convinced than ever that the law enforcement and justice system are heavily politicized. At my age (73) I admire those who dissent (rioters, protesters, radicals, anarchists). These are the true heroes that protect citizens.

Wanna know something even more infuriating? The current Republican party blocked Obama from appointing federal judges to vacant positions for his entire 2nd term. Now in Trump's term, they've appointed 200 federal judges to pack the system with their agenda. And they've appointed 3(!!!!) SCOTUS judges, and guess what. Every judge they appointed, have been federalist, far right, nut jobs who have consistently ruled against voting rights, civil rights, and healthcare. So if you think Hoffman is the worst of the federal judicial system, I'm sorry to say he's one of many. And if they could, they would do what Hoffman did to Bobby Seale TODAY to black defendants in their courts. This is why this election is so fucking important. Look up Republican and SCOTUS anti-voting rights decisions in the last few years ALONE. They want to rule the country and they know theyre the minority, so they're destroying the infrastructure that allows for them to be replaced. Its so fucking scary man.

This might not be the right place to do it, but I’ll try to relate at least a few reasons that I felt repulsed by Abbie and Jerry. I’m not expecting any of you to share my life experience. I had immigrant parents and therefore no political leanings up until I had my experiences in the late 1960s in college. I had to decide for myself where I drew the line through what I experienced first hand. I was 23 in 1968. I don’t expect any you to understand what it is like to see a mother of 4 abandon her family and move to California to join a commune. The face of the mid 20s husband will haunt me forever. I don’t expect any of you to understand what it’s like to see an optimistic young girl from a farming town move to the city, fall in love with an intellectual who impregnates her and then drives her to get an abortion immediately after finding out the news of the pregnancy and effectively ruining her life (remember, abortions were very uncommon then, and much more dangerous). I don’t expect most of you to really understand the face of a father who goes to upstate only to find out his only daughter is being passed sexually around like a worthless rag doll. I saw these things during my time at Stony Brook University in the late 1960s. The way I remember the 1960s was: early on pure optimism, in the middle political upheaval, and in the end, the faces of disappointment by those who were mislead by guys not unlike Jerry and Abbie. I have many more of these stories, and I understand its unique to living in a very particular area of the United States (New York) at a very particular time. But I think I have a good grasp on the mentality of those political activists who never bothered to tell people that they came from rich families and had golden parachutes. Less than 10 years after the events of this movie, Jerry Rubin was a multimillionaire. Many of my fellow college students with backgrounds just like Abbie and Jerry lived similar lives after the fad was over. I’ve never heard any of them express remorse for the ones who were left behind. After 1968 I thought all I wanted to do was reject the radical leftists and become a republican. In the end, I personally decided to stop voting after I became dissilluoned with the government following Watergate and have been a Libertarian ever since. My personal experiences through these years of political upheaval resulted in me hating the government, but not in the way Jerry and Abbie did. They were not looking for more liberties, they just wanted the things they approved to be legal, and the things they disapproved of be illegal. But sometimes I still suspect what they really wanted was to sow their wild oats and have wanton sex and drugs before they had to fall in line for their families tradition.

"tricky dick" as he was often called back then, appealed to a segment of the usa he called "the silent majority" to continue the unjust aggression in vietnam. some believe this called on the country's "conservative" constituency to more actively participate in national politics, and was arguably the beginning of the vocalized activist fracture seen today, having been re-energized with raygun and mobilized more vocally now with drumpf...

Abbie Hoffman, died in Solebury township Pennsylvania. Died in an old remodeled turkey coop, of a drug overdose. He had been hired to cause trouble at an area in Point Pleasant Pennsylvania where there was going to be a pump installed in the river to pump water over the ridge to a power station where it was needed for cooling. Some of the people who oppose the pumping station hired him. You might ask yourself how do I know all these things because not only did I live there, but I was personal friends with one of the people on the EMS squad that took his sorry dead ass out of that old turkey coop. His skin was nearly black he had been dead for quite a while. She told me that there was to be radio silence in the ambulance on the way to the Doylestown Hospital in Doylestown Pennsylvania. Strangely enough the ride from Solebury Township to the hospital was only about 6 or 7 miles but they were met by the news media at the hospital. I guess he would’ve done anything for money because he certainly didn’t pay for the lodging where he was that. Eventually the pump was put in, the river did not run dry as predicted by Abbie and the terrible noise that was supposed to be generated by the pumps never materialized you can stand over top of them when they’re running and you can’t hear them they’re that far underground. Edited for spelling error

I have 2 questions, I don't know if u will see this, it might get lost within the comments forever. But anyways... 1. I didn't understand the scene where he tells him to "find some courage" and there are 2 men in the back and he explained why they are there and what they are there for but also not just that but the entire scene while they are talking to the U.S government guy (Sorry I am not American I don't know what his Official/Formal title is) 2. Why did the police take off their star and name tag (Or whatever that his) outside the bar. Loved the video and explanation, Love from CANADA :)

Take it fro an old guy who followed the trial very closely as a much younger man: the ending when Tom Haydon reads out the names? did not happen, pure fabrication. I will say though, it was very moving so I will forgive Sorkin for taking license.Yes Abby and Jerry wore Judges robes but they did not have police uniforms on underneath. Also this movie portrayed Jerry as a first class flake. he was very articulate and intense, He was not arrested trying to prevent a rape in the park during the conflict but rather he was arrested on the street hours? days? later as he and a friend were looking for a place to eat. Please do better MOJO

I honestly wanted to be a Abbie Hoffman but I think, I am really a Tom Hayden. I will always be cautious and will think of what is appropriate. The overrule and the judge's robe are two of the pleasant things on that trial. It's a slap to that f***ing judge. This is why the justice system should not be influenced by the government. It should be a separate entity in which the government cannot use it for their gain. Sometimes, I feel like some reactions of Black people about racism is too much but Bobby Seale made me realize that I only feel like that because I am ignorant of the hardships that Black people went through. It's sad that even if a lot of years have passed, racism is still rampant. As a teacher, I will make sure to educate my students on important matters such as this. I pray for a better future! 🙏🙏🙏

The point of reading the soliders names would be to convince the public that the Vietnam war was bad and should be stopped. It's unclear if this worked. Within the narrative of the film the reason why it's shown as a victory is that it's a 'fuck you' to the judge and ends the character arc that the film depicts for Haddon of becoming more anti-establishement and redeems him for standing up for the judge.
