I remember when the WoW exodus to FF14 happened, and fuel was added to the fire due to all sort of controversies that Blizzard got into. Me and many other FF14 players rejoiced, but Yoshi-P, the director of our game proclaimed that all of this was no reason to celebrate because WoW is a very important game to him , one which he has many fond memories of, and that without it, FF14 would not exist as it does now. Those words really stuck with me... If a guy whose livelihood depends on FF14 making money can express regret over the troubles that WoW was facing... Then who am I as a mere gamer to take joy from the misfortune of people who simply chose another title ? It's a lesson I'm glad to have learned.

For me anyway, I feel like the sheer amount of time I put into wow is why I have so much distaste for it now. I was addicted to the social aspect and definitely wasted years on it. While I was never addicted to 14, I did thoroughly enjoy the story.

It's kind of telling when everyone I played Vanilla with is still doing the same thing 15 years later..

I remember during the wow exodus to XIV, so many folks spoke about WOW like it hurt them and their family. And, it kind of did. Playing a game for over a decade only to be felt ignored and neglected can feel like it's an old friend doing that to you, not just a game. I'm firmly in the boat this is the best time to be an MMO fan because there's so many options now. Even if XIV and wow are still the biggest, between the two are such different experiences, you really can find something you want between them.

Being set for Life and Satisfied are antithetical to MMOs. MMO Andys who have ten wives, 16 kids, 5 jobs are drunk with the wines of Dionysus, they scream and throw monkey poo at normal people.

I have waited so long for someone to call out this behavior. It's literally killed whole servers and communities.

I loved the Apple montage at the end. I was always in a guild, for 15 of the 17 years i played wow, so I totally get the tribal feeling. You would see those people who came around on patch day, played for a week or two, and moved on to something else. During that week or two when they were around, people would invite them to groups immediately as if they were revered for their flip-floppiness. I knew all too well it was a pattern and stayed away from those players. The two years in BfA when i was without a guild was probably some of the best times i had in wow. It is how i made millions of gold because instead of focusing on *the guild schedule*, i got to spend time by myself and see what really interested me about wow, and gaming in general.

I think most of the things you presented in this video could be linked to any video game genre. Fantastic job!

there was always some people in the ffxiv community polarized against wow but they were often a very small portion of the community, a large portion of the community had either never tried wow (and were more likely FFXI players) or had dropped wow long before picking FFXIV and had no real emotional attachment to it. That is, of course, until the huge explosion of people came during Shadowlands and the big controversy at blizz. Feels like FFXIV got a lot more anti-wow tribalist when a bunch of recently-quit-wow players came over and made that pretty much their entire personality.

Here I am, thinking that you were going to do a deep dive into this trope of tribalistic cultist mobs INSIDE the games. And all of the time you were going for the most vicious cults of all. The actual players. Lol

It's not just investment, but also the fear that the investment should have been placed in the other camp. People moving essentially means your investment is less likely to matter, also this is why some people are against stuff like improving the new player experience as well as legacy stuff returning in small amounts or with a different coat of paint. This isnt something inevitable though, you can fight tribalism. I have almost all the mage tower skins and would LOVE to see them return so other players can earn them for themselves.

WoW has been in my life longer than literally any other thing then my own body and a handful of family members. I've played it off and on since I was 6-7 yrs old during OG vanilla. I think that if the community was more healthy and not as off putting as they can be, the game would do better and more people would play it, and in turn the company would be incentivized to keep up the good work like they are doing RN in Dragon Flight. I am all for people having their favorite expacs, their opinions on how the game is now, but WoW's community is one of the only ones I've seen that even after some people havent played the game for over a decade will still go out if their way to bash the game online, in KZfaq comment sections, and have no idea what state the game is truly in now cause they haven't played it in multiple expacs. I didn't play BFA when live and I have seen/heard all the systems in it that would've made me probably not like the game very much myself. But now I'm playing in Dragon Flight and played the end of Shadow Lands, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it and the game has some things that make it significantly better than it was even just an expansion ago. (Talent systems, so many routes to gear up, being super alt friendly, etc.) And atleast fron what they are announcing and showing off for The World Soul Saga (starting with The War Within) is going to be going even more in a direction I'm gonna enjoy. The way I see it is that it's so unhealthy, almost like staying in contact with a bad relationship you've had in life just to constantly drag yourself into a negative mindset, while also trying to deter others from even playing it or hating on them for enjoying it. It would make alot more sense to give the game a try yourself again, and see if it is better (or worse) for yourself, or just walk away and let it go (and stop fueling unhappy/negative feelings interacting with something you obviously have disdain or a hatred for. It's like saying you hate a person, but then purposefully choose to always linger around them just to make yourself unhappy. From my personal experiences, i know thats a really unhealthy way to live. But hey, it's people's own lives, and they can do what they want with them. But on the same note, people shouldn't have the audacity to try and make other people hate something the way they do. Just let people enjoy what they enjoy and you can enjoy what you enjoy. Different strokes for different folks, especially when it comes to preferences in some recreational activity you do for FUN such as video games. Rant over, good video MadSeason. Keep it up. 🙏🔥🖤

Oh Man U speak to my heart on one game in particular and its community; POE. Shout out to the G2 chat crew. I don’t know what the community would do if they couldn’t absolutely shit on another AARPG from LE, LA and ofc D4:BAD. So it’s not just the classic version of the MMORPG like WoW/FF14 but also AARPG’s that have like community structure.

guilds is the reason I got addicted to WoW. Not only did you havew to pay to get on the server, but you had to socially prove yourself to enter a guild. I was so SICK of dealing with air head noobs, chumps, bullies, overly angry for no reason people ect ect and found that the more barriers to entry, and the harder it was to get into a tribe, and group of people it weeded out people who where toxic and people who put no effort in.

I started playing Ultima Online in 99. I would make a pretty good living buying and selling accounts especially houses on Ebay. I progressed into Diablo 2 and sold items on Ebay, but WoW was another obsession completely. As close as I would get to a drug habit.
