Thanks- always appreciate how you use evidence to back up what you say. The thing that took western civilization out of the dark ages and into the period called the enlightenment was that superstition and opinion was replaced by scientific reasoning and evidence. Unfortunately we seem to be entering a post- reasoning era so all the more important is your work in educating using the findings of scientific evidence! ❤

Is this mostly based on epidemiological studies? I am generally skeptical of those although it’s better than nothing. My own N=1 “study” after quitting coffee a month ago is that I sleep better, I have more consistent energy throughout the day, my teeth are getting whiter and I feel calmer without anxiety. Most importantly, my irregular heartbeats (PVCs) are way down, which is the reason I quit coffee in the first place. For me, my own personal experience is more important than any general population research of any supposed benefits. I guess I’m in the second camp of people you mentioned and coffee just doesn’t work for me. I like it, but not enough to have it mess with my heart health.

You're forgetting that western medicine is built upon general population studies and solutions. Individuality was never priority #1. If it doesn't work for you, then you just have to look for solutions yourself. It is what it is.

Thanks for your comment! Yes mostly epidemiological with coffee - most of the RCTs are on caffeine and coffee's effect on athletic performance. What I would say with something like coffee (that's absolutely not necessary for health!) is to absolutely listen to your own experience than anything else in this case. When it comes to nutrition science (even with RCTs etc) we're generally getting a population average and there's always going to people who react better and those who react worse. I'm a bit the same as well, I love coffee but if I have even just one normal cup it's too strong for me, I feel anxious and don't sleep well. I sometimes have decaf (and sometimes mixed with a tiny bit of normal coffee) but I also really enjoy matcha green tea which is a bit more gentle. That's awesome all the benefits you've got from quitting coffee and good on you for making that change, sounds really positive! The health benefits of coffee seem to come from the polyphenols and other compounds present, which are also present in a lot of fruits, vegetables and some other drinks. For example matcha and cacao (e.g hot cocoa) both contain many polyphenols so I imagine they would also have similar benefits but without as much caffeine.

Yes, absolutely! No one is going to be an exact average so we need to find what works for us as individuals. In some cases general advice can be helpful, but for something like caffeine that can affect us differently depending on genetics etc it's so important to listen to your body.

I also quit coffee for similar reasons. I was addicted and couldn't be productive without a high dose of caffeine; a regular dose wouldn't cut it. So, I decided to quit. I switched back to enjoying tea and found that I experienced the same benefits after giving up coffee - better sleep, less anxiety, and healthier teeth. After 1-2 years without coffee, I eventually decided to reintroduce it but in limited doses (not more than 1 cup per week). I still appreciate the benefits of coffee, but I believe I can manage better without relying on it.
