This video recaptures our experience in the last year of ownership. We have put on 12,500 miles in that year. There were a few issues, we take some time to talk through what was done in this past year. We leave it up to you to determine if the Land Rover is Dependable. Can a Defender be a reliable vehicle? We talk specific to the 90 in a couple areas.

I’ve watched all your Defender vids as I’m seriously considering one. They have confirmed both my fears and hopes. I’ve had a Gen 1 Disco that was 100% trouble free for 170k, and a Range Rover that was a bit “persnickety” from day 1. It’s such a roll of the dice with LR. If it’s good for the first 10k, keep it forever. If it’s trouble, flip it and run. That’s the position I’m taking. Thanks for the detailed information.

Everyone advised me against buying a LR Disco 4, I did not listen, I bought it 7 years ago, done 100.000km and I still love it. I get in front of the steering wheel to relax. Nothing like the rolling quality of a LR. I do little off-roading, but even in motorway quality all season tyres it has been brilliant on mud or snow, as the electronics and differentials do all the work (ok on rocks one has to be careful with standard tyres, but it is still superbly comfortable). And it can tow a building and be loaded with a household! The defender 90 will be my next car if I decide to downsize. Otherwise the Defender 110 is the real successor to the Disco. Brilliant cars.

@tatianad4855
@tatianad4855 2 жыл бұрын
@@3204clivesinclair I suppose you mean besides the annual service so ok, I will be honest, about once a year. In the very beginning I had a stupid problem with a sealing rubber band on the windscreen, I had a replacement job on the front wheel system that was under warranty (caused by serious potholes), and two sensor failures (spare tyre pressure sensor and a fuel sensor, which was worrying but was a false alarm, and was caused by local diesel quality). Other than that, the heating windscreen was great in the beginning but has lost its heating ability in a couple of spots. That’s about it. I don’t consider it a lot, in 7 years and 100.000 km. But yes, service is costly and some parts need more frequent replacement due to the sheer weight of the monster (break pads and tyres notably). I cannot say how the car would behave if I did a lot of harsh off-roading, but this car is in my view one of the first real SUVs (i.e utility background evolved to offer also serious comfort). I was looking for the towing capacity, so at the time of purchase I tried a Toyota Land Cruiser (the simple, not the 100), which was comparable in price, but both my daughter and I got seasick in it (!!!) and a Mitsubishi Pajero, which was much cheaper but pathetic on the motorway. I did not want an American car (not a fan of Jeep, been in a couple and I don’t enjoy them) and I don’t think there was any other passenger car with this towing capacity in Europe. Voilà.

I have a 2020 D110 P300 that rides on the 18” off-road tires on steel wheels. Steel is real and these wheels look great. In 18 months (11,000+ miles), my D110 P300 has been reliable with zero mechanical issues. There is a paint drip on the B-pillar but it is only seen when the door is open and you look for it. I consider myself lucky. This is comfortable ride that can go anywhere, anytime in a manner that eludes most vehicles. The P300 (2.0l 4cylinder) engine makes a pleasant sound at low speeds and is relatively quiet at highway speeds. It sucks gas, but that has more to do with the Defender’s steel-intensive underpinnings. Steel is real (and heavy). Cannot recommended this vehicle enough.

You guys are so great for this and the other Defender 90 videos. I just got my 2023 Defender 90 S - 4 cylinder and have a couple of hundred miles now. Love, love, love this vehicle. My wife may even be a bigger fan. You helped me make the final decision a while back by your well-detailed descriptions and comments on the 90. I also have the white color with the two-tone white roof. I added a few items that I highly recommend (the divider trays for the front and rear parts of the consoles, an aluminum trim that overlays the "Defender" stamped on the inside gate, step rails, and a black aluminum license frame from LR). I also changed the tires to the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac 255/55/19 which lowered it 2 inches and gave it a nice aggressive look without road noise. It also has the Windsor leather seat option in "light oyster" that compliments the inside well. This really gives it a luxury feel (but beware if you are not a clean rider although it has guaranteed color protectant). Absolutely would buy this again and again. I agree also on the coil springs. I just traded my LR RR Sport with air suspension and I think the Defender actually rides better and without the worry of maintenance down the road. Previous to that I owned a Jeep Wrangler and cannot stress the major difference in the two. I drove away with the sticker price of $64k and will never regret it. The dealer said people saw it hit the lot (even though I built it and had my name as "sold" on it) that people were begging to buy it before I picked it up. Again, you nailed the reviews dead on and I am a fan for life!!

4 runner with its own issues Toyota bros never want to talk about. From differentials needing replacement nice and early, steering columns getting all bent out of shape, general shit fuel economy, no power for a vehicle that size, people that put big tires and rims are always coming in for wheel bearings, etc etc. Toyota bros just don't bitch about this stuff as much as others. They actually think their cars are going to last a half million miles with no maintenance. So they service them as such as well. One of MANY reasons Toyota's value keeps falling through the floor.

Basically warranty times wouldnt pay enough so we would have to make an excuse to get more time out of a job. I wouldn't take that description seriously as in reality it probably never had a stripped bolt. The tech just wanted to get paid more for the job.

Finally a real world review. This reliability thing is such overblown bull. Had a Discovery Sport and a Evoque over 6 years. No major issue ever. never got stranded. Small things got fixed with service intervals. Just like any other car. To most Old Defender owner who hate the New Defender - I remember when the Old Defender came on the scene to replace the series 3 and series 3 owners said it's not a real Land Rover because it doesn't have the split windshield anymore. LOL!!! I really like the new design. I feel like Wrangler, Bronco and G look so old already. I know that's part of the allure for some people and like these cars, too, but I think JLR did a great job offering something different and modern, but keeping the boxy shape. The only reason why I haven't bought a New Defender yet is because they dropped the ball big time on the EV version. Personally, I'm done with the ice cars. Rivian picked up the ball big time and created what should have been the new range/defender with the R1S, but they are very pricey to get into. Hoping some other boxy, off roady option will come online soon.

@NOYB Googlepuppet I think you are right. I am impartial. I have never had a Land Rover but am looking for a 1st gen disco. I think the defender had a specific purpose. It was built to be used in harsh conditions, easy to fix, and modifiable. The new one is a good car, but it just doesn’t do what a defender is supposed to. I definitely would not buy such a complicated car for harsh use. Idk Land Rover just isn’t Land Rover anymore.

I have been driving toyota Landcruisers since 2006 and they are so flawlessly reliable that even the niggly faults you described put me off. Its all very well praising the dealer when the vehicle is under warranty but what happens when it expires. My current Landcruiser is 6 years old this month and not one thing went wrong with it - just regular servicing. Admittedly I have only done 30,000km in those 6 years as I have other vehicles but it was the same with my previous two landcruisers. Id love a defender like that though - although I am thinking the longer one looks just as good now and is more useful. I will test drive one and see what I think.

I love the Defender 90 and it would be my first choice of car. I was wondering about quality control and whether or not the loose screws and replacement windshield is more than minor to me. For this price the fit and finish should be perfect. Then again, look at the fit and finish on Tesla's. I'm glad you gave us your opinions about the rear seats too. I thought they would be spacious and comfortable but I was wrong. The Defender 90 is a big car, way too big for to be simply a 2 +2 and I consider the rear seat problem a major flaw. I hope Land Rover figures out a way to make it more roomy back there. Also, are the rear windows stationary? The rear windows should at least be able to slide open. I would imagine the rear passengers would feel somewhat trapped even with the amount of light flooding the cabin. I would hate to spend more money for aftermarket sliding windows. The optional sunroof is not enough to create an airy, comfortable rear seat experience. I like the look of the Defender 90 more than the Defender 110 but I might be forced to go for the 4 door. The Defender's 2 doors are super-cool though. Also, the gas mileage is abysmal. 17mpg isn't acceptable. I don't care how cold it is. What ever happened to the 4 cylinder hybrid that makes 398hp and gets 71mpg? Even then, if it's a plug-in hybrid, how will that help people without a garage? Hopefully the 2023 Defender 90 has the hybrid engine, better rear seats, sliding rear windows, and better quality control. Let's go Land Rover! You can do it! Thank you for this video. Stay awesome.
@PerformanceOnWheels
@PerformanceOnWheels 2 жыл бұрын
Windows are stationary. I agree, even a vent would be nice. It is cool sitting back there with the roof being glass as well. I think there easiest solution is to put the rear seat on a slide (like discovery sports). A. It would lift the seat up another inch or so B. You could slide it back when you want more leg room. Or slide it forward when more storage is needed. If you passengers are small the rear seat conversation doesn't really need to exist. It would be if larger folks are sitting back there on a regular basis.

@@PerformanceOnWheels The sliding rear seat is a brilliant idea. It would solve a lot of issues. I bet you could do this aftermarket. You’ve got great visibility on your channel and you should make another video showing all your suggestions on how to make the Defender 90 better. Land Rover needs to know. Other car vloggers had their voices heard and manufacturers listened. Much of this could be customized after purchase but it’s just more money. Might as well get it right the first time. The only thing which can’t be exchanged is the engine. Land Rover has been promising us a hybrid for a few years now to no avail.

Great comments. I love the Defender 90, but after watching vids on how difficult it is to access the rear seats, so with two elderly parents I think I’d have to go with the 110. Some of these issues these gentlemen are talking about aren’t really that minor, so now I’m having second thoughts. I really hope Land Rover will get these things fixed, because it’s such an awesome vehicle in the way it looks, the off-road capabilities mixed in with the luxury aspect. I wonder if buying a certified one with around 20K miles on it might help to avoid some of these factory issues, because perhaps the initial owner had them and got the majority of them fixed. Still want to wait for the car markets to normalize as much as possible though.

To allow more versatile tires like the KO2s. Since to your point, 19s do limit the type of tires you can get / use. Looking back that’s probably the only change I’d make to my original order would be 18s. Vs the 19s. Just to save me cost in the new rims. I got a 110 p300.

Besides also having the crackling sound and some creaks I think the most annoying thing on my Defender are the anemic backup lights. I love the design of the lights and it was probably one of the first factors I fell in love with the vehicle so quickly. But the position / strength of the backup lights in combination with the position of the backup camera requires me to backup at night by ear only. Thankfully there is an aftermarket kit I got that helped with that but the factory lights are horrible.

On the JD Power scoring; I would NEVER use this as a purchase guide for my type of vehicles: 1) Obviously, a Toyo Yaris will have fewer issues off the assembly line than a Defender. Defender is a far more complicated vehicle. Want bullet proof reliability? Buy a Yaris or even better - a bi-cycle..Point is that LR ONLY make complicated 4x4 off road vehicles. 2) “Issues” like the ones you describe is really not a show stopper for me - they will not leave me stranded and will easily be fixed under warranty.

When you compare the price of a First Edition Bronco to the cost of the Defender, it's not reality. I priced up a new Defender 110 vs. the Bronco 4-door (I need the rear seats for the family). As spec'd the 110 was $80K when I got everything I wanted. When I priced the Bronco, it was $59K (loaded Badlands). I'm sorry, but that's a HUGE difference. I am ordering a new Bronco when the orders are opened for the 2023 model year. I LOVED the old Defender, but at this point, if I were really serious about getting a new Defender, I'd wait and get an INEOS Grendadier. As for the reliability issues, JD Power and Associates bases their information from surveys. If more people complain about a particular car, they get dinged in the ratings. It's a "perceived quality" by the person filling out the survey (yes, I work in data analytics). I don't really pay attention to them all that much. My 2000 VW Golf that I owed from new and drove it for 235K miles was fantastic! A 2000 VW was NEVER considered the benchmark of quality, yet, my car was stellar.
@PerformanceOnWheels
@PerformanceOnWheels 2 жыл бұрын
Good write up! Thanks. I would still argue that a "base" or low optioned Defender would be an overall more enjoyable vehicle than a loaded Bronco. That is if the intent of the vehicle is daily driving. That base or low option would be near that loaded Bronco $60k point. I have filled out a couple of the surveys that are sent out when a new vehicle is purchased. I don't think the way the questions are asked clearly gets an owners true thoughts about the vehicle out. If people are basing vehicle decisions on the consumer report as well as jd power survey outcomes I think a lot of people will be missing out on some vehicles they truly want vs. what they settle for.
@rugu6869
@rugu6869 2 жыл бұрын
@@PerformanceOnWheels I agree 100% regarding the JD survey questions. I have filled out a couple as well and questions are difficult to get a full sense of how the vehicle is actually working or not working with the wording and the canned answers they give you as options. As for the Bronco, it's going to be an everyday driver, however, I don't really need the plushness of a more conventional SUV. My wife has a 2022 X3 and my fun car is a 911. If we're doing LONG hauls, we'll be in one of those two. The kicker for me really is the ability to remove the doors and roof of the Bronco. I had Jeep Wranglers in the past (YJ"s) and just love the freedom of removing everything and having fun. While I do like the Defender, it's just not the best choice for me. I can see the appeal and I do believe they did a very nice job with updating an icon, it just falls a little short as it's not rugged enough for me. I would say LR made the right choice as they need mass sales of vehicles rather than niche.

Coil suspension and a rear hand brake is going to be a lot more reliable and the vehicle is designed to work rather than heading to the country club in Cheshire or Chelsea. My family have had Land Rovers from the series 1 for use on building sites, but when my manual D3 finally gives up, I will be going to Toyota or Ineos.

@@PerformanceOnWheels yeah, looked at both and went with a D5 myself. I think the D5 is for someone who wants something bigger than an RRS but similar accoutrements. compared to the Defenders it's a little nicer inside, better seats, less thirsty for gas, longer cargo space than the 110. capable offroad too but doesn't have the angles of course. oh and most importantly (for me) a liftgate with a drop-down platform and no swing gate. had two of those and hate those things. :)

The Bronco is not even in the same league as the Defender. And no green bubbles. Great job guys.

I have had many fine cars by several makers, not land rovers, but never had stuff pester me like this stuff you’re talking about. Ive had 911s, MB’s, BMWs, Lexus, land cruisers, lots of things. I’ve had 4 Acuras for example and never had anything of any kind at all minor or major ever go wrong. Not even very minor things. Nothing. They’re not Defenders. True enough. I’d never by a Bronco, certainly not for 77K. For some reason some day I might still get some Rover something. Maybe a Defender 110..maybe another one. No idea why.

There is something unique about the experience (interior/driving/styling) that makes folks not think twice about it. I think they put something in the HVAC.

They were great!!! They are they same texture as what is on the dash it kinda rough. Another note. If you live in a cold climate that part is super cold! So it does not get touched a lot, assuming you have the heated steering wheel.

Yeah but Bronco will probably last a while, whereas Defender fall apart after warranty runs out. That's usually what happens with Land Rovers, I could be wrong and things changed

Don't know what to buy these days. Like Bronco Raptor, gas prices are throu the roof. Like plugin XC60, people say electric motors fail. Land Rovers are nice, but reliability is questionable. Lexus is the only brand that seems solid, but their cars are boring. Wanted to tune my Cayenne diesel and call it a day, but it's also scary to drive with 100k+ miles. Resale value is high as well for now, like $10k over what I paid years ago

Thanks for the honest review. 👏 $58K for a vehicle chock-full of Build Issues? And the vehicle doesn't even have a Power Driver Seat??? 🤯. Sorry but No Thanks! JLR is famous for poor quality and your experience proves it.
