I was in Scotland back in the 1980s and asked a Scot why they observed Guy Fawkes night. He said; The Brits celebrate it because they caught the guy before he blew up the government. We celebrate it because someone tried.

Exactly. I love Guy Fawkes. I wish he had succeeded. UK caused lots of harm and evil to my country, Brazil, throughout the centuries. This Parliament is The Cabal of All Evils along with Germany and France. One day, I know, they will answer before God and many of them have already been punished accordingly. God's Justice will always prevail.

Well as a Brit who has celebrated it for a good 45 yrs I can tell you, we celebrate it still, because he stood up and fought back against king and government, even if it was originally intended to be celebrated because he was caught.

He wasn't even the person that came up with the plan though or led them. The main two was a relative of mine and his best friend. Nobody knows the whole story. They came from money and royalty. John and Kit had noble blood and their family of Wrights had high titles at the time. Our family first got it's titles helping overthrow a king way before this happened. I think that was around 1200 AD or something. Maybe earlier.

@Mike Seork I'm not sure why you thought it necessary to bring politics into this, but I think you'll find that it's mainly the right that have determined which part of history we do and don't teach. For example how we're taught about Churchill, how he's a was hero etc, but miss out the parts where he didn't want the NHS and was a massive racist and open about it. It's far from just the left.

You either don't know what you're talking about or you're delusional if you think History is taught well, in depth, thorough and with both sides of the story. History is supposed to be about fact and transparency, like Science. Not the fairy tale, dumbed down, missing all the bits that make the country look bad, way that it's actually taught.

"Remember, remember, the 5th of November, the Gunpowder Treason and Plot. I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason should ever...be...forgot." A line from one of my favorite movies V For Vendetta. One of my favorite monochromatic movies (black and white films) is shown in part in the movie, the original Count of Monte Cristo from 1934 starring Robert Donat as Edmund Dantes. The original Count of Monte Cristo can be watched for free directly on KZfaq. I definitely recommend watching it for those who also love classic monochromatic films.

I watched, "V For Vendetta," for the second time last night, prompted by a respected co-worker who told me he and his sister watched the film together on the 5th of November for several years in succession. I watched the movie for the first time last year while recovering from an injury. I felt I hadn't given it my full attention - nodding at points because I'd had a long day. I wondered when I'd see it again. Thank you for this video on Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. I've known of him and the failed attempt for decades - that he was considered a fool - and his failure was celebrated in Britain around Halloween. I had not made the connection that he had threatened the rule of King James I, the king associated with the publishing of the 1611 translation of the Bible in England. Well, I forgot that fact. Fawkes is a fascinating character. I do not condone violence or terrorist activity - yet I can see how persecuted believers passionate about their faith might consider ways to end the oppression they suffered. And in today's World, I can see individuals fearing the continued erosion of their "rights" - and fearing the prophesied One World Government - would seek ways to avert the tyranny that is to come. "Remember, remember, the Fifth of November...."

In New Mexico, in early September, we have a similar burning, only I don't think Zozobra represents a specific person so much as an ideal. He is called Old Man Gloom, and he burns away the negative influences before we get shut in for the winter (though New Mexico winters are very mild so we rarely get shut in for more than a few hours). It's a cathartic thing so having a figure representing a common enemy is a good idea. Give us an outlet and a target for our aggression and you can prevent some group acting out.
