Hey Jimbo, I can definitely see why it seems like M788 and M888 are the same thing - but that couldn't be further from the truth. The formulas are 100% unrelated in ANY way whatsoever. M788 was developed by a scientist that retired 4 years ago and was actually based on the M688 product. M888 is the result of 6 years of development involving close to a dozen scientists and is 100% different and new from the ground up. The *only* thing they have in common is the easy application. You should come down to the new HQ and check them both out side-by-side. While you're at it, you can try and learn about Ultimate Ceramic Coating which is the most innovative formula in the history of coatings. Mark my words. We can talk all about it. Also, M86 So1o was a single liquid, multiple pad system meant for body shops. It was aimed at removing sanding marks or finishing out with a single liquid, but multiple steps. The new M300 so1o is an all-in-one that is not body shop safe and the only thing it shares with M86 is the So1o name due to the idea of using 1 liquid with many pads. Nothing else related. You can try those side-by-side too and share your experience. PS, I just came back to Meguiar's and my all-new role is to be the Innovation Leader for the entire brand - would love to sit and chat about innovation, too. Would be a fun topic for sure :) Let me know when you want to come down. -MK

Congrats on the new position. I’m super stoked to see what new products come out of that. I think it’s a smart play for them to have someone like yourself dedicated to that. Why use the same so1o name then? It was a knock off of system 1 even back in the day. To say a coating was completely built unlike anything else also seems pretty fishy. I’m not a chemist and don’t even play one on the internet but from what I know there’s only so many ways to skin a cat. To say that it’s completely new seems a little far fetched. But I could be wrong and honestly always leave that on the table. We all get bad info from time to time. But based on marketing claims and such, it’s usually not too far off base, as seems to be the case here. I would be open to a discussion but it would require access that I bet the big wigs at 3M and megs wouldn’t offer or allow. If they would be open to a chat about that we can off line about it. On another note, you’re a great guy and I’ve always enjoyed chatting with you at shows and such. Just so you know nothing is personal and I hope it doesn’t come across that way.

Borrowing money was cheap the last decade. Interest rates have risen significantly and it makes it harder for smaller businesses to borrow capital which could also lead to less innovation and new brands. Brands need to be on their game to last in a tightened capital market. Inflation has also left many with less discretionary income to buy and try new products.

Curious where people think there's room for innovation. Everyone seems to be looking for a long term tire dressing, but with the material makeup up of tires, that might be impossible. Getting into fantasy land a little, but a coating that wasn't affected by water spotting would obviously be a complete game changer. I'm a simple man and would simply like to see a shampoo that also cuts iron and smells pleasant. As far as companies that seem to be innovating, I've really enjoyed following Koch Chemie. GUF has been the first non-slip floormat dressing that I've really enjoyed. Also, having Pol Star, an effective interior cleaner that could also be used on screens, was big for me

Jimbo, quite an interesting story behind the System One and Sytem 51.... you should have Tom Horvath on and do an interview. He told me the story and evolution of CSI and the marriage of System 51(not Tom) and Jay Leno (which didn't happen). B/B has some of the System 51 stuff while Leno did his own thing which may well be B/B too. I saw Jay Leno in Adam's Bottle filling isle in Colorado, inside Adam's Shop.... good stuff Jimbo...

Stumbled on this episode, you are correct in all aspects. After few years I'm relaunching my brand again. Providing affordable pricing on tools of the trade like 25$ foam cannons that companies are asking 80 plus with basic brass components. I want to launch few detailing chems but most private label companies are just fill and slap a your logo on it of the sub par preset selections. And part of me is not ok with that.

From my perspective, the crowds seemed more interested in wraps rather than the latest and greatest in ceramic coatings. It seems like everyone has a ceramic coating. I didn't look at pricing but when there is a lot of competition, either products get better; longer lasting or prices drop.

I recently got a lot of hate in a Facebook group when I said exactly the same thing about Cerakote and Pan‘s video about them: you cannot just claim things like „we whitelabel for all your favorite coating brands“ without presenting proof, as this creates a skewed image of the market. I personally felt that Pan showed a lack for a sense of responsibility with that video when he just repeated what Cerakote was telling him or wanted him to say for a „sponsored“ video. Thank you for this video, it was a very refreshing piece of honesty!

It seems like the new and smaller brands are the ones who are more innovative but then the big brands do nothing but copycat off of it or buy them out which ultimately kills some of the innovation. I had coworker & his mother stay in Houston. She created a bag for luggage and was selling it on her website. She decided to put it on Amazon 2 years later. Within 6 months, Amazon had an Amazonbasic version of it which put her out of business

As a fellow pro detailer with over 10 years of experience coating cars, I can tell you the future is self healing clear coat, I know they exist but they need a paint booth and the full paint process. People hesitate to ‘re paint’ their new cars just for added protection with a self heal clear. But a wipe on product, that is at least 50 microns thick and self heals without heat will revolutionise the industry. PPF has too many downsides as it’s a plastic that adds distortion and yellowing.

Great commentary Jimbo. I too have noticed the stagnation, redundancy, yawn, meh, nexxxt over the last couple years or so. I personally would love to see a product that gives JUST absolute intense gloss/shine. I don't care about protection, slickness, whatever. I mean I do ofcourse but not as part of the package/chemistry. I just want a product that provides gloss, real exponential shine. And not P&S Dream Maker, not Meguiars Insane Paint Shine Glosser, not TW Pure Shine. These are all minuscule, and imperceptible between one another. I'd like to see something extra ordinary....Nice video as always.

This is an interesting take and I feel it will depend on the company's focus. My understanding from listening to industry "Experts" is that you can only get shine or protection but not both to where a single product will excel in both categories. However, I as someone providing a service will prefer to sacrifice gloss in order to gain protection as my main sales pitch is to provide protection not necessarily gloss. And a main thing is, how glossy does a product really have to get for a regular person/customer to notice it.

I enjoy your pushing the lack of innovation and hopefully this wakes up the manufacturers. As far as the economy we are in big trouble. M2 money supply is negative for the first time since 1927. Housing and commercial buildings have yet to pop. In 2008 the banks had money before the bust but this time they are insolvent and the effects of the inverted bond yield curve have yet to be felt. Waaaaay to many variations on the product theme but NOT ONE reference to technique. Not once did I hear ANYTHING referenced about the amateur everyday home detailer. TW skipped SEMA? Shocking! At the end of the day, the "industry" is the one Turtle Wax understands - which is the home detailer - millions of us. No lie. I'm not in any way putting a knock on the pros, but you guys have over indulged in yourselves. Decades went by with little to NO product innovation and then BOOM!👊🏼 within the last ten years so much innovation - who the fu*# can POSSIBLY keep up?? Respects Jimbo... Interesting video as always, Jimbo - I really appreciate it. For what it's worth, another detailer whom I follow was able to identify the company in China that makes one of the popular consumer grade ceramics (think about the silver bottle from the kingdom of Avalon). I buy it direct and it costs me 60% less for the exact same product. If your prediction turns out to be correct (and I'm not saying it won't) I suspect that companies like that may also experience some contraction as they will lose some of their "white label" distribution channels. Keep up the good work.
@BigBear--
@BigBear-- 7 ай бұрын
Correction, you maybe buy direct from the manufacturer. However NOT necessarily the same product as what's sold by Avalon King. Scott HD only found the manufacturer, he did nothing to confirm the chemistry is the same between the products. It also wasn't the "world shocker" that he made it out to be that a brand was using a white label blender to customize and rebrand their products. This is a very common practice in this industry. Not saying it's not possible you got the same product, just that it's not a sure thing without actually testing the chemistry of both products.

For sure Turtle wax listens to its consumers and innovates. I think P&S is similar as well as both companies let us talk to the blenders and talk to the end users. I think people will stick to one brand thats easy to get local or ship quick. I have said for awhile if I could stick with one brand Turtle Wax or P&S. Both fairly priced and easy to get. Only thing that stops me so much from Turtle Wax is not the bigger gallon I can get but there products even in 16oz sizes are not that pricey. As far as companies now days to even be considered in detailing they have to offer certain products to even be heard or looked at. You could have the best tire dressing but if thats all you offer detailers want look at your company. You got to have some ceramic sprays, soaps and ect. I miss the days where someone just works on there one peoduct until its awesome and sticks with it.

I don't know if you noticed CarPro's coming with their nano diamond technology or their coating like diamond36 but many detailers are removing diamond36. One great innovation is from Stoner's with their iron remover which smells like APC instead of rotten eggs. Great stuff from Flex on their totes and how you can stack them on a single wheeled cart too. Ian from Autofiber always comes with new stuff like that synthetic towel that let contaminats go through but when they launched their new rip towels on 80x20 to me was great to use on non painted surfaces but The Rag Company came for SEMA with their new tools and the rip rag which is 70x30, keeping higher quality on microfiber towels

yes, there is def some great innovation outside of liquids that I saw that looks very promising. Ian is always innovating cool stuff which I love trying. I think that clay towel is a great example of how to take a common item and make it a little more advance, a little more unique.

Are some searching for something bulletproof? Ceramic coating has been hot topic for the last eight years. There now seems to be a cap in new innovation maybe because we have reached the end point of what ceramic coatings can do in different climates. Example, DQUARTZ Nano Diamond, what else is harder than diamond on the MOHS scale? We’re still dialing in maintenance regimes and process there is more room to get this right. I am of the option that PPF is the next big thing that is slowly but surely catching on where asset protection is concern. The self healing ability and impact protection is a winner. Some ppf flims are coming with a hydrophobic layer already that doesn’t require coating. It’s different ball game all together but it’s next.
@tpddetailscr

I agree on PPF being the next place to be looking at for innovation. Color PPF, textures, and hopefully price drops to make it more accessible for the end consumer (even though current PPF business hate that idea lol)

To be fair. They do have their own chemist (to the best of my knowledge) and it just becomes a numbers game on filling their own stuff. It’s more efficient to out source the making and filling once their in house chemist has a formula they like. That’s not my gripe really. It’s that there isn’t new innovation in liquids.

It's okay if Meguiars is reusing their products because Hi Tec Yellow wax still looks better than any professional coating. Plus it's super slick. D30016 is also incredible and Hybrid Paint Coating is such a better choice for coating jobs.

Here in Brazil, I’m starting my business and to be honest, I’m realizing how stupid I am. Like I’ve spend a lot of money buying a lot of products that I actually don’t needed. Like, I watched a lot of videos, and trusted them, which is a huge mistake. It’s weird, sounds like you don’t need to know nothing about detail, it’s more like buy it and this will make everything for you. For me, the industry controls the people making us feels scary about things. Like, you cannot use any product different than a leather cleaner to clean your leather, and some things like that.

SEMA show is not in trouble. The problem with Cena is trying to invite the public to something that we've been enjoying for so long and that's why it is something that's amazing. If they want to do a big party for the public do it on Saturday let us are enjoy our Tuesday through Thursday out in Vegas amongst the industry. 275 passes to go to Chima and then another $500 if you want to show your car at SEMA what the hell. Those spaces inside of steamer are like 10 grand to be in the booth
@autodetailingpodcast
@autodetailingpodcast 7 ай бұрын
If the show wasn’t in trouble they wouldn’t have so much open space and they definitely wouldn’t be opening it to the public. I don’t think they’ve ever done that until after SEMA. I’m not saying they can’t recover. But they def need to figure something else out.

Not everyone is gonna come out with 16 new products every year. Carpro released a diamond infused ceramic coating for the consumer market. Thats pretty innovative. If it works as advertised it should be a banger. Sounds like a bunch of doom and gloom but i just dont see it man. We have the best selection and quality of products the market has ever seen. Ceramic coatings werent even a thing when i started detailing. We have so much gloss and durability at our hands now, people dont realise how much work it toook too keep a car looking like that years ago....

Remember, SEMA at its core is business to business. So Chemical Guys and Turtle Wax are market is towards non professional consumers which is why they wouldn't show. This customer base isn't really there. As well the cost of having a booth/floor space at SEMA is insanely expensive even for mid sized to large companies. Unless a small company goes all in and has something extremely exciting, the return on investment isn't there.

Why is constant innovation expected where we are now in a space where the detailing products have become so easy to use and durability, gloss slickness have improved over the last few years. The PPF\Wrap industry grew alongside the liquid\chemical protection industry so if i need what they can't do PPF for the win. Is it the consumer expecting more or the companies trying to make money grabs. Before the 'ceramic' phase; and it wasn't ceramics that started to transform the industry it was the polymer sealants like Seal N Shine and affordable DAs; detailing a car for me was a workout. Those rubbing compounds were evil. More than happy in this space we are in now. What will happen is that the market will probably contract as the cream rises to the top and the scum sinks. We have enough social media coverage eviews and folk testing eveiwing and being called out for fake news when it is that so we can make better purchases. Even if we don't, people like what they like and all of the rest will fall by the wayside.

Because some people don’t want to dig through free info to get the correct information. Why do people still shop at Nordstrom when they can go to Nordstroms Rack? At NR you have to hunt the deal and usually get second rate stuff. If you go to Nordstroms you’re getting the newest, highest quality, better service and you’re in and out with what you want. Neither are good/bad it’s just additional options.

@@autodetailingpodcast Word. I appreciate your response. I admit I was just testing your approach of asking why I should use one product over the other haha Seems to be the consensus about SEMA though. No real innovative things. The biggest takeaways I saw were the Adams bucket and the guys at Obsessed Garage were oogling over an applicator pad in that "new" coating kit from Meguires, so I want to see what that feels like.

Chemical Guys is a Walmart brand even though. Even though McGuire's is it's a legacy brand Chemical Guys is oversaturated. They think right now that they're making a ton of money in the stores so why go to see my show. When I go into a Chemical Guys store it's like oh my God 50 versions of the same wax there's no point of me even shopping there. I would rather Shop with a legacy brand that I trust like McGuire's now Turtle Wax not being the same of this year that shocked me too but it didn't matter I didn't go there to see Turtle Wax I went there to see what McGuire's had new. And there is a lot of smoke and mirrors coming from these other brands there I've never heard so many stories this as I have this year

At my opinion the last Megs products that was truly INNOVATIVE and out of the box thinking was the Megs fast wax aerosol, and the wash+. After those...the get the "ceramic" ..hybrid.. infused ..multi buzz words road....with no great product along those years. Additional last couple of years they only release many times ,the same product on different labels. Also... products that they already have but now ... already diluted. Loke RTU hyper dressing, or RTU detailer...e.t.c... Unfortunately.....

Interesting. Now u can’t innovate just to innovate if tech isn’t ready or there yet. You can make current products better in the mean time. Brands that rebrand same old product with new name and colored box will get found out. Sure u might sell it because of your brand reputation, but not u just risked ur reputation on same crap and fooled ur customer. Great job, but guess what? U won that round but do u think happens next time u launch a product or next “big” thing ? U lost our trust and now we hesitate to buy ur products or better yet we’re gone for good because there is plenty of brands, brands that didn’t trick us. Long run the money u made off fooling ur customers will back fire 10x.
