It's also a job that puts massive pressure on all your joints and lower back. Customers just want shiny awesome looking cars. But they don't realise how much physical effort goes into detailing a car. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

I turn wrenches M-F then Detail Saturday’s and Sunday’s and I also got burnt out to the point where I wasn’t ever going to detail again. I get 1 week of paid vacation at work and it takes a long time for it to come around every year. I started taking unpaid time off and just going away to relax for a few days and reset. It made a world of difference. I also decided to only detail 2 maybe 3 weekends a month. For over 2 years I detailed every single weekend and my body eventually said enough was enough. This is a great video because it’s the stuff that normally doesn’t get talked about.

In the corporate world we call this concept, Work Life Balance. Without some balance you work all the time and then the family suffers plus your burn out affects your job performance. Everyone loses when you over do it!

Hey man, Awesome wisdom. Also, because of your videos I brought back my 16 year old Tahoe which I accepted as a "beater". I've learned so much from your videos about products and techniques. The videos saved me so much time, frustration and money. Now I have the cleanest, glossy and striking paint in the parking lot. Thanks for taking the time to video your passion, It's solid gold if you want a clean whip. Don't even acknowledge the trolls, they just have nothing better to do with their time.

I am a Union Pipefitter so I make damn good money doing that and it takes care of insurance, retirement and providing a great life for my family but I detail cars because it is a passion and it creates a nice amount of play money to put into my many other projects and when it gets overwhelming I just don’t schedule anything for a few weeks and enjoy my other passions for a while and get back to it! BTW...I SENT my wife and kids to Hawaii this past summer ( we live in Ohio) for 10 days and I stayed home and worked and detailed a few cars and did a couple of off-road runs and LOVED every second of it... I hate beaches!

Jim, really great video. It's really nice even for us subscribers, who are running ragged with thier own detail business, or myself an enthusiast, who gets beat up in coroprate Anerica 50-60 hours a week , and often find it had to be motivated to wash and wax our car on the weekend, even given how much we enjoy it, and the satifaction , we get when the gloss is popping, the glass is crystal clear, tires nice shiny matte finish, interior spotless and the smell (Mckee's 37 Quick interior detailer, smells awesome). So what Im saying is thank you for being real, videos like these are very important, keep these coming. IMO its a great way to connect further with your subscribers.

Great video buddy! Its all about balance. I had a detailer client that I did some consulting for last year and he was on the brink of divorce. He was running on fumes and completely neglected his time with family which caused so many problems. He initially approached me on a "problem" he was having which was having to do with motivation and as I dug further, it was something a lot more serious. Needless to say, I worked with him to cut back and carve out time for his family. No phone calls, social media or anything that was work related during that quality time. For me personally, about 6 years ago I went through almost the same thing. We work to live, not live to work. I've know many detailers over the years that decide to throw in the towel because of reasons like competition, a bad business deal, social media pressure, poor work/life balance, lack of business experience/knowledge, pride, woe is me attitude, combative attitude, anger management issues, you name it! As business owners, we know that being your own boss does come with a price, but its having a work/life balance that helps keep us moving forward. Don't feel guilty about taking time off. Even when we buff, we have to keep stopping as we go, otherwise disaster happens. Keep up the great work Jimbo!

Thank you for opening up about this subject. I just started watching your videos because I bought a new car and wanted to learn how to take good care of it so I,m glad you didn’t quit. I like your product comparison videos and have already gained a lot of knowledge watching you. Just a quick story: my dad has always been obsessive about his cars and still owns a few classics that he bought brand new and they still look brand new because of his OCD car care. He’s now 90 and is still passionate about car care! Your passion about car care is inspiring. FYI I have worked in veterinary care for about 30 years now and have experienced burn out many times but I stay with it because it’s a passion of mine. All careers or jobs can create burn out but it is very important to get away and reset. Happy New Year! Thanks again, Joni

Yes yes YES! I'm a year had a half in and realized this. I work 7 days a week and every other month I'll take a weekend off to reset. I have to go out of town. Because if I stay in I'll end up doing some kind of detailing so it forces me to not work. Great thing (only thing) about living in cali is that theres so many places you can go to for the weekend that wont break the bank. In a few weeks I'm headed to San diego for the weekend just to get away

This is exactly why it's just a hobby business for me. I don't understand guys who do this whole one-man operation thing. Yea, you can make more money than your previous/current crappy retail or grocery store jobs, but the job is not just detailing. It's closing deals, building trust, and taking the clerical work home with you. I see why you guys have KZfaq channels. Gives you a chance to monetize your knowledge and experience.

This applies not only detailing but any career, the more you put in the more you need time off. As a project manager weekend breaks do not make a difference, emails keep coming in so brain is on stand-by mode just waiting(and stressing) for the next one to come in. The solution for me is 3 weeks break, leave home and leave cell phone at home - takes me 2 days to get over the anxiety that I can't be reached, and then I'm forced to relax. Thanks Jimbo for posting this, Merry XMAS to you and all your viewers

Jimbo, great advise and perfect timing, thank you so much for making this video. It really hit home for me as I'm trying to reset/recharge now too after feeling burnt out lately. Mostly due to my full time job, but also my hobby/side detailing that I was getting burnt out on too. Luckily I was able to take several days off around the holidays to spend with the family and just relax. I'm hoping I'll come out of it refreshed and ready to hit both again. But I think I need to also take some time once a quarter like you suggested. Thanks again, happy holidays, and as always I'm looking forward to your future videos.

Man same thing!! I’m working 7 days a week! I’m detailing Monday through Friday , I’m the head the Detailer at Porsche and we have a use car lot!! Which is all Luxury cars . Detailing millions dollars worth of cars a day!!! And then Saturday and Sunday running my own Mobile detailing business and detailing the sickest cars “but” ! I took the last two weekend off . I hurt my back couple weeks ago!! I’ve been detailing for the last 12+ years .. anyways , you must take times off. Also I see everyone trying to become a Detailer who’s out here Mobile detailing and charging 30 dollar details smh smh 🤦‍♂️

Goebel’s Mobile Detailing hey man, funny you mention the $30 dollar guys. A coworker of mine at my day job tells me she used to go to this guy who would do interior(vacuum, glass, APC carpets and seats, armor all) and exterior(wash, wax) for only $25! I said I wouldn’t touch that for less than $125! When I told her that’s waaaay too much work for $25, she seemed surprised and said, “you think? I mean he did a good job so I didn’t mind paying but they closed down earlier this year!” I repeated to her again, that he was doing too much for too little and that’s why he closed. To make sure she really understood I said for only $25 he better have 50 cars in and out the shop a day! That was the end of that convo haha It’s sad, these guys come and go because they believe they aren’t A)worth it themselves B)not good enough to compete with “high end guys” and C)actual professionals! For A, maybe they aren’t worth it, maybe they don’t do great work, it’s possible but also some are very good and just can’t seem to break even. I wonder why!? For B, don’t compete, don’t compare, if you aren’t doing “high end” work, then you’re not even in the same game as those shops. Do you, if they want wash and wax for $100 and maybe AIO for $200, that’s certainly not “high end” and a different customer altogether from the big shops! For C, if you don’t think you’re a professional and should charge as such, then close up shop and stop hurting every other detailer who treats this as a profession, puts time money and effort into their business, product testing, certifications, training, business license/insurance etc.
@GoebelsDetailshop78
@GoebelsDetailshop78 4 жыл бұрын
Amen brother !! I wouldn’t do that less then 200,, it’s because everyone thinks they can be detailers and clean cars !! Difference between washing cars and detailing !! I started out working at a body shop! Using rotary and wet sanding plus full interior detail.. these half ass folks are killing the ones who actually do this stuff for a leaving and KZfaq Detailer who never detailed and picked up a camera and started to detail and make videos

Goebel’s Mobile Detailing absolutely! Although I started as a hobbiest/enthusiast, I can only echo your words! Good for you man to stick it out, really hard to find detailers as they are all closing shop after a few years. Its a hard job and even harder to keep employees since it is not cut out for everyone. The two shops near me closed, they were barely getting by with the cost of renting and high price of products, but mostly employees not being reliably and doing good work, They are both doing it on the weekends as cash jobs from home which seems to be a growing trend. I used to details my cars when i was younger and liked it, now it feels like work so i prefer doing other things and get it done. Too many detailers now on you tube, great way to make extra cash but they are all repeating each other reviewing same products, i like your channel and good for you to focus on yourself and family, your health and family have no price

I feel usually people who are serious and passionate about what they do give it there all and work intensively vs others that are less passionate and less serious that take breaks on a daily/regular basis as they work. Being in the first camp you hit that wall sooner especially when you get hit with a bad day. Breaks are definitely needed and sometimes it is a good idea to plan trips etc. before you hit that wall. Very easy to be at either end ie be a hard worker or not be a hard worker. Hardest part is keeping that balance. Fantastic that you realized that and are working it out! Most of us are aware of trying to keep the balance and want the same thing as you.

I can relate to this a lot, I do not work detailing but I'm a Network Administrator and a active moderate of the website the struggle of burn out is all too real. It really seems to suck the life out of you and you go into a career positively (most wish to make some change) and about half way through it hits you. You realize you hate your job, you actively despise something you where once passionate about and you have mostly become the thing you wished to change. Really we are understaffed and while I can't provide any information about the company I can say everything mostly remains in a constant state of broken-ness and it is all too hectic 24/7 my job requires me to be on call at any moment and trust me it does happen just jumped in the shower and work calls.. just turned of the tv half asleep work calls... It gets old and really the only way to avoid burn out (or as I like to call it "the wall") is to step back. Over the past 6 years I've had varying levels of fatigue but the worst instance was when I was put in charge of marketing (along with my other daily obligations) and I tried to impress and I worked my butt off. To some degree it was successful but I soon realized I had another full time job to deal with outside of my two other positions which where both full time. The talk about growing your online business tho really hit me I knew that feel the second I heard it, I've done this for so long (relatively) that I feel it's really the only thing I know granted I'm only 29 but for my working life this is about it and I felt trapped I hated it and I had to step back which in the long run has always helped. I generally in one of three phases Actively working hard, working at a reasonable rate, and burnt out it seems to be a never ending cycle of these and while I fill my position/s and do what is asked of me I generally end up in a never ending cycle of this. Eventually something will happen, an employee leaves a serious issue happens on the website (community based issue) or growth and overall activity slows down. It's typically times like these which gets me out of my burnt out phase and motivates me to do my best, over time I slowly burn out slow down, than slow down more repeat. The 24/7 on call life style is not glamorous a lot of thankless work is done but at the end of the day I feel rewarded as I feel I've kept everything from falling apart without me. A few years back I started working hard with other newer employees trying to teach them the systems and how to handle/run things I told myself I would quit this job but only when I felt I could safely do so without harming the company or my coworkers in the process. We are like a family and while things are not perfect I find it difficult to actually step away in the end as I always find new motivation shortly later.

I’ve had my detailing business I also incorporate window cleaning as well for almost seven years just this year I’ve felt like quitting as I’m worn out working 6 days a week sometimes Sunday as well constantly without a holiday and realise it’s crazy I need to recuperate I’ve had small breaks but nothing substantial plus I’m in my mid forties almost and my body is breaking down at a rapid rate like a slipped disc which is slowly healing since early this year it is hard on your body that’s for sure as much I still enjoy detailing I’m going down to 4 to 5 days a week in 2020 so I can refocus and been able to continue without burn out, As it’s Boxing Day I’m writing this comment enquires have been coming through as with my days off I have non stop texts or emails or voicemails now I respond in business hours now so to have that work life balance I have some wonderful clients now no longer have paid advertising, You raise many valid points it’s something all business owners need to take heed otherwise your no good to anyone if don’t look after your self first,

I enjoy detailing people’s cars but as soon as I stop enjoying it I take a break with my wife even if it’s only a long weekend every month and agree with you it needs to be done and being self employed I can do that as long as I don’t let my customers down it’s ok 👍

Yes, it's crazy ! But you are right, sometimes is to much and everyone need that break Month or 6 months or even a year to get back stronger. Is it to much to compare with Jordan and what he did and his next 3 championships after Cementing his legacy to be the best basketball player ever. Week or two weeks is never enough to forget about all the things happening around. Life is way to short, we all know that - enjoy the life, bills can wait.

Welcome the new opportunity, opportunity taken or discarded both good and bad ultimately represent a certain freedom, true dissatisfaction can occur in the absence of choices. You possess communication skills that allow you to relate to people from a wide range of social economic and cultural differences, if you do ever make a career change I’d hope that you’d continue to post entertaining content about whatever it is that floats your boat.

I work 2 jobs, one is detailing... All money I save during one year I have to spent to pay insurance for my fiat grande punto 1400ccm3, a 4000 euros worth car... That's a life in f... Serbia... And then when I hear that you can save money for a vacation on Hawai and all that with one job... Man... I hate my country... I haven't been on any vacation for about 5 years...

Great video. I'm a small mobile detailer ..got to say I did sell all my stuff twice now . It's a part time gig as I have a full time deal. But recently I was in this boat again....I wanted to sell all my crap and give up. Just had a job that turned into a nightmare on numerous levels. Once the job was completed and lady was happy that kept me going ....that I wasn't the worse guy in the world and right as I left the next door neighbor asked for a business card . It's that little stuff that gives you that extra push to keep moving forward. Thanks for the video I watch a good bit of your stuff keep it up.
